Physical Description:

Zoltan is a human male, result of the human melting pot from centuries of global and then interplanetary and interstellar travel and mixing. He stands 178cm tall and has brown eyes and dark brown hair on his cranium, with other hair in various spots of the body typical of the species. With a trim build, he is able to pass Starfleet fitness requirements without trouble.

Personality:

On duty Zoltan is serious about his assignments, but open to friendly conversation that is not distracting. When piloting, especially performing difficult maneuvers he can't help but feel a thrill. In dangerous situations as long as he's controlling a craft, he seems to get even more relaxed and calm the worse things get, cheerfully calculating optimal angles and courses.

Off duty he remains respectful but unwinds more. He does consider the Academy and Starfleet as all part of the broader experience of life, so even in off hours he can enjoy learning new things, especially around the universe and those inhabiting it.

Character History:

Born on Luna - barely, as his mother had just returned from visiting family on Mars, Zoltan grew up on that first stepping stone of humanity to the stars, as part of a family operating freighters throughout the Sol system and to a limited degree nearby systems. He did well in school and excelled in mathematics, leading to recognition of his ability as a mental calculator, able to incorporate and calculate complex equations quickly and accurately. He was an avid swimmer, and his ability to calculate angles and judge velocities served him well in diving and various low- and zero-g sports.

Growing up with frequent travel on spacecraft, he learned his way around starship systems quickly and was piloting shuttlecraft and the like (with oversight) from adolescence.

With a boost from his advanced mathematics Zoltan passed selection to Starfleet Academy. While there he stretched his wings in a number of ways, diving into his studies, relishing any chance to pilot, and investigating the diverse nature of the Academy's student body.

His piloting talents led him to a position on Nova Squadron, the Academy's elite flight team, leading it in his final year. After graduation, his first assignment was to a fighter squadron, re-positioned frequently to patrol different potential trouble spots. The next assignment for the hotshot pilot was...to a starbase.

While he grumbled at being largely 'ground' bound, spending his time overseeing the flow of traffic in and out of the station, loading and unloading it was valuable operational experience, and the proximity to the Bajoran wormhole was an excellent opportunity to study such a phenomenon up close over time. He still maintains it was almost certainly a bureaucratic mistake or punishment for some unknown slight to an admiral.

Leaving DS-9 behind (so he thought) he leapt at the offer to helm the USS Medusa, a Centaur class destroyer. In a battle where the squadron of three destroyers faced off against a quartet of Orion raiders, Serrano's inspired maneuvering was instrumental in the resulting victory. Soon after this action his promotion to Lt. was approved. A month later he was selected for a new assignment and told to report to DS-9 again...to join the USS Artemis as Conn Officer on a mission of exploration!

While his piloting and navigational skills are most evident in his position, he has the broad training of any Starfleet officer, good technical skills and is skilled with mathematics, astrophysics and subspace fields.
