Rules Adaptations

The ruleset for Stars Without Number can be found for free here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/p...anufacturers_id=3482

This ruleset isn't made for satire or silly stuff, but is a quite deadly kind of space game. Depending on what concept we will take, adaptations will be needed for the rules. Like dying only being an option etc. These rules adaptations will be written down here for reference.

I have created a sector using the rules (having planets with tags and tech levels and stuff) but will need to work a bit to make them silly as we go from planet to planet, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Rules Adaptations

Earning Experience Points (XP)
Earning experience points will be a goal based affair. At certain goals or milestones you will gain experience points. Seeing the slowness of playing by forum I might be more liberal with handing them out than normal.

STANDARD GOAL: When you host or run a party at a new location, earn 1 XP (for the entire crew).
PERSONAL GOAL: Write a goal for your character to complete during the game. You get one goal which will earn you XP.
Example Goal The Ricepudding Might Make:
Find out a new clue about my sister!

Leveling Up
You can only spend XP to level up at a party. The cost of such a party is 100 credits times the level you will become. If you are leveling up multiple times with the same character, this price needs to be payed for each level. Multiple characters leveling up at once don't need an extra cost.

So, to level up to level two, a party should be held that uses materials and services worth at least 200 credits. All characters can level during this party, provided they help organize it. If someone has enough XP to level up to level three during this party, the party would have to cost 200+300 credits, so 500 credits. If you have more XP, but cannot pay the price to level up multiple levels, you can only level up as high as your credits spent go.

There are many ways to get a hold of credits, should you need more. You probably can be quite creative. Or you could go into debt. What could go wrong with that, right?

Rules Adaptations

THESE RULES ARE UNTESTED, A WORK IN PROGRESS, FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED IN THE CHATROOM THREAD.
Guidelines for writing scenes
  1. Write what you want your character to do according to their abilities, dice-rolls and motivations/goals.
  2. Don't write/take control of another player's character without their permission.
  3. Unnamed NPC's can be controlled or invented if it fits the situation. They should not automatically give you a benefit or drawback. The NPC should have a reason to be there even if you weren't writing the scene. If it would be less then ordinary for them to be there, you should roll a connect roll to see if they are there.
  4. The same goes for objects. If you need a certain object to be in the scene and it hasn't been established yet, it is there if it would not be out of the ordinary to be there. If it would be less than ordinary for the object to be there, you should roll a notice roll to see if you can find it there.

Target numbers for rolls to find a person or thing:
It would be natural: no roll needed, automatic success.
It would be unusual: 6+
It would be rare: 8+
It would be highly unlikely: 10+
It would be unbelievable: 12+
It would be impossible: 14+
It is actually impossible: no roll needed, automatic fail.

Influence the roll:
If you failed the roll or succeeded impressively, there are a few ways to influence your result. (these can stack)
  1. Spend an XP for an automatic success. This XP is gone now. You can no longer use it for leveling.
  2. Lower the difficulty a step for the person being hostile to you or the thing being in bad shape/malfunctioning.
  3. Lower the difficulty a step for the person being unavailable now or the thing being out of your reach.
  4. Increase the difficulty a step for the person liking you (more) or the item being exceptional in quality.
  5. Increase the difficulty a step for the person/thing being exactly where you want them/it to be.
