Kitheras

You cast your mind back through the stories and ballads you heard about Myth Drannor and the Fall. There are rather a lot of them, and you even picked up a few from the humans in the time you spent in Sunset Vale. Unfortunately, you don't remember anything about a Elaethen Bhephel, and very little about Myth Drannan alchemy. It just wasn't particularly an area of interest.

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

While Elorfindar considered his vote, Corym went to gather Talindra and Kora.

"The final rooms are cleared, and we need assistance to see what is of note.  Talindra, in particular I'd like to assemble a package of items that would be of sentimental value to the Bhephel family.  Whether the master of the tower escaped or not, he surely has relatives that grieve his loss and this will perhaps lend some comfort. Also--many of the clothes in the wardrobe seem magical.  Magical clothing today are quite rare--are all of them embued with powers and the like?"

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

After the battle

Elorfindar nodded thoughtfully at Kitheras impromptu poem. He then joined Krackor's prayer for Lianthorn and put a hand on the caring dwarf's shoulder.

The present discussion

Karilla Silveroak:
"It all sounds like dust and death to me. I have no strong opinion on the matter. This is not my mission and I don't care one way or another how or if it is completed. I will say, however, if an Archmage thought that the basement was too dangerous to mess with, it might be wise to follow in his thinking. The fact that we all lost our healing potions to my dear brother's magic makes me less interested in delving into dark tombs in magic infested areas."

The moon elf priest nearly retorted that his useless magic had probably saved her hide, but he was too glad to hear Karilla speak so... characteristically. He realised he was still very confused about his sister - in a different way than he usually was.

After a short pause, he cleared his throat and began: "First of all, I agree wholeheartedly with Corym regarding the package for the family - if Talindra agrees, of course." The chronologian continued after a short pause during which he took a stride to the left, only to sharply turn around and take a stride in the opposite direction, then stopping abruptly. He appeared somewhat nervous. "Neither of you voted for the third option, and I agree with that. I myself am torn between the other two, with a slight preference for the first. But it is the prerogative of scholars to complicate things. So here is my proposal: we tempt fate by going downstairs, but if what we first see is too dangerous in the opinion of the majority - provided that we have the opportunity for discussion -, we abandon the attempt. If Krackor and Kitheras - and anyone else opting for the cellars - agree with this proviso, my vote goes with them."

Karilla sighed at her brother's inability to sit still. She refocused her attention on Corym.

"If you are all dead set on digging around in the cellar then the little elf boy should take the lead. I am deadly when needed, but I am no scout. You have the ability to turn into a wisp though, yes? Why don't you traipse on down there and take a quick looksy around. I'll be by Elo and regain my strength. If you need me, scream."

Not waiting for a response, Karilla walked back towards her mount.

Talindra nods at your request for keepsakes. "Master Bhephel didn't have any children, but he did have two sisters. I think one of them was married. I can locate some of his personal effects and writings. You'll need to find his family."

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

Corym, Elorfindar, Krackor, and Kitheras all journey down to the kitchen. Kora gets sidetracked by Talindra asking her to once again be her hands, as the ghostly wizard goes looking for keepsakes. The light ball that had wandered off for several bells rejoins you and floats at Corym's shoulder.

The rotting pieces of wood that used to be a cellar hatch are pulled up and set by the stove. Below you is the sixty foot shaft, regularly spaced iron rungs providing a straight-forward climb. The light from the floating ball of glowing triangles penetrates about a third of the way down the shaft before darkness overwhelms it.

((ooc: Are you doing the casting up here, or down in the cellar? And is the rescue team staying in the kitchen or going down into the cellar?))

Not sure which extraction team you mean but will we do?  A wry smile plainly seen across Krackor's face.

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

Led by Krackor and Kitheras, the four of you descend into the cellar shaft. The bottom level is as cluttered, degraded, and empty as Corym's first foray. You spread out through the room, but find nothing more than dust and the decayed remnants of the foodstuffs the school used to store down here.

The door is very different than the doors up in the school. It is solid metal, smooth and untouched by the centuries. If you had a light, you're sure it would gleam. It has a sheen like steel, but doesn't seem quite right for steel. It's elaborately decorated, its entire face chased in an intricate pattern of twisting vines and flowing water. There are multiple layers of decorations both rising from and sinking into the metal of the door, giving the scene texture and vitality. ((ooc: Anyone with Heraldry or Religion: Elves can make a check to analyze the door's decorations.))

In the center of the door, at the confluence of three streams of water, is a large keyhole. Directly below it is a single pull ring. There are no visible hinges or gaps in the door.

((ooc: Door is to the south, directly in front of Corym.))

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

The iconography of the door's decorations are heavily symbolic of elven death and rebirth in Arvandor. It's very much in the Eastern Forest Style, which was pioneered in Uvaeren before its fall, and is significantly different than the styles west of Anauroch that you're more familiar with. It's definitely consistent with a tomb and probably Jhyrennstar-era.

In reply to DM (msg # 889):
Krackor check all around him as usual, by his feet, behind him and into the corner of the room.  Did no one bring any light with them?  Yes we can see heat signatures and make out some shapes, but what if there is writing that neither makes nor hides heat or cold?

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

Corym was convenes by the fear exhibited by his Living Light spell, but went to gather Kora’s torch. He took a few moment to attach leather thongs to the torch at the top and bottom, and then to secure it to the webbing he wore across his torso and upper arms and legs. He referred to it as his ‘house breaker harness’ and it was used to keep tools within reach but secure and tight against the body.

After lowering himself back into the cellar, and getting Kitheras’ breakdown, he activated his mage sight and searched for traps magical and mechanical on the door.

The light causes the door's patterns to shimmer and gleam. It really is a remarkable piece of art. You check it over carefully. It doesn't have any traps, but there is a minor Alteration dweomer that suffuses the entire door.

Re: Expedition to Myth Drannor

Corym realized the door wasn’t actually locked and asked for a rope to be a fixed to the pull ring so that the door could be pulled open without making physical contact with alteration magic. Once open, Corym would give his companions an estimate for the duration of his spell and ask for them to enter and find him if he had not returned in that time. Then cast his spell and made to make a speedy survey of the crypt.

Krackor watches as the light filters down into the cellar carried by Corym and marveled at the work and craftsmanship that the door exhibited.

Corym, be careful and come straight back if you feel even remotely like something is going to be a challenge, whether spirits or traps.

Helping Corym with the rope on the door handle, making sure that the door does open inwards rather than away from them.  Do you think the magic on the door is to seal it or stop it corroding? Krackor then braces himself and pulls on the door like he was in a Tug-of-war competition.
