Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

For discussion regarding any and all Star Wars movies, from the original trilogy to the new Clone Wars animated movie, feel free to share your opinions!

And, I'll take a stab at what may be a controversial statement, and state that I really don't mind The Phantom Menace as much as most people seem to do.  I mean, sure, the parts with Jar-Jar were more or less agonizing to sit through, but for every bad thing about the movie, there was something cool in it - Darth Maul is still one of my favorite villains in SW, Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn was absolutely brilliant, and behind Alec Guinness in A New Hope, he most exemplifies what a Jedi should be, at least in my opinion.  We also got our first taste of Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu, one of my favorite characters in the prequels, and the opening scene in the Trade Federation ship is just really fun.  And I still claim that the lightsaber battle in the end of the movie is my favorite in all the Star Wars movies.

You may now proceed to flame me for my previous statements!  :D

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

Well, let me be the first to say that Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker worked really well for the opening battle in Revenge of the Sith - he was the perfect little Jedi emotionless doll. It was when he remained wooden when he was meant to be all Sith and nasty that was the problem.

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

I don't know...  I'll have to go against popular opinion again, and say that I didn't have any major problems with Hayden (except maybe the love-scenes with Anakin and Padmé, but I blame that on George Lucas' writing! :p).  Definitely did a better job than Jake Loyd, but then again, I'm of the opinion that there is no such thing as a good child-actor, heh. . .

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

Young Anakin and Padme was weird, considering the ages. There's nothing actually happening there (I hope), but when you know where it's going... Eww.

But older Anakin and Padme was even weirder, when Anakin comes off as a stalker obsessed with Padme.

The appearance of R2D2 and C3PO bug me. I like the characters, and droids in general, but their appearance there was inexplicable, utter nonsense. I'd like to have seen some new droid heroes.

Jar-Jar Binks strangely doesn't annoy me as much as he does most other people, but then, I have a high tolerance for crap. :) I'm pretty sure JJ is a stoner, smoking the Nabooian (sea)weed. The first movies become a stoner adventure comedy: Dude, Wheresa My Bongo? Jar-Jar And Roos Escape From The Trade Federation Droid Army ... It all makes sense!

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

In reply to PC BadCatMan (msg #4):

I'd say I have to agree with you in general badCatMan.

Jar Jar occasionally got a bit annoying, but certainly not enough to generate the level of hat he and the gungans in general seem to produce.

And I would definitely agree that R2-D2 and C3PO being in all the movies was just too much.  I know they were probably trying to make sure there was some recognizable connection between the movies and they are some the better 'iconic' characters, but it just puts way too much strain on my suspension of disbelief.

It might have worked (IMHO) if they had explicitly mentioned the droids getting a 'thorough' memory wipe in order to protect Anakin's children, but I don't remember anything like that and it still wouldn't cover all the inconsistencies that having them in movies 1-3 cause.

Have people seen the clone wars movie?  I watched it and thought it was decent.  Its a kids flick and there were rough points, but certainly no worse than the "real" movies.

Not seen it.

As for Jar-Jar... I loath and detest Jar Jar Binks.

Because I like Gungans. I like the idea of Gungans. But all anyone ever thinks of when you say 'Gungan' is Jar Jar bloody Binks, who needs a 24-hour Carer and a blue badge for his speeder bike.

*ahem*

That was my cat stepping on my keyboard.  As I was saying, Jar Jar is supposed to be annoying, that's why he's so funny.  I liked Jar Jar.  It's been forever since I've seen episode 1 though.

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

Aye.  Jar-Jar was supposed to be so annoying, the gungans exiled him.  That gives me the impression that the rest of them (Tarpals, certainly) aren't stupid.  I really would've liked to have heard their language, myself.  Their accent was interesting enough to warrant hearing them speak naturally.

The thing that actually bothers me about the prequels was that it seemed to override the entire feel of the original trilogy.  The Jedi were not only everywhere, but they were outright superheroes.  The Force was easily visible anywhere they went.  There was hardly a scene with Jedi in it that didn't involve telekinesis or some other obvious powers.  Han was a clever guy, and he'd been around during that time.  How could he have not noticed any of that, and yet been so well-traveled?

...Really, what bugs me more than anything else was Vader's Force spirit being suddenly represented by Hayden in VI.  I think that was bad.

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

Unfortunately, the Gungan language is dead. Gunganese as the galaxy knows it is the exact language Jar Jar speaks - a bastard hybridisation of old Gunganese and Basic.

Which is why my Gungans all spend a language slot on Basic. ><

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

They replaced old Vader's force ghost with Hayden? Blegh.

I wish one day I could watch the original, unexpurgated trilogy again, with all the effects and scenes intact. Where Han Shot First, the Emperor first appears as a cross between an old woman and an ape, and everything. I'm going to have to hunt down some VHS cassettes, and a functioning VHS machine, I guess.

Still, my local tv station has been playing the entire movie series in order every Saturday. I'm looking forwards to Return Of The Jedi.

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

If you can tell me how to upload a movie to my PC and then send it to you, I can do that.  The DVD of the original trilogy that I have, well...wait...the set that I have has two DVDs per case (or movie, in this case), and one has the movies with the changes and one has the movie as originally put out in theaters.  So I could send you either/or if you wanted, hon.  Assuming I can do that somehow.  :p

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

Honestly, I really wish Lucas had given his ideas to Spielberg, sat back, and taken the royalty payments.  It's not like he doesn't already have enough money, and while his stories are absolutely fantastic, I really think he could do with some guidance on the execution of turning those stories into movies.

Seriously, who lets two generations of authors expend their time and effort on creating an Expanded Universe any genre could be jealous of, and then say "Nope, it's not cannon.  It's an alternate reality!  Ha, ha, fooled you!"

So, just a really random question:

Why did Owen give Luke the last name "Skywalker?"  He met Anakin all of one time, and when Obi-Wan does his entire deliver the infant to his relative scene, I'm guessing that he told them, "Yeah, this is Skywalker's son, but he's Darth Vader now.  Don't let him find out he has a living offspring, or else he'll come for him."

Just wondering.

Duh.  :p

Verdicts on the cartoon Clone Wars?  My 7-year-old son just loved it.  He kept jumping up out of his seat, cackling, and otherwise cheering the good guys on.  He was enthralled the entire time.  I thought it was pretty good for a cartoon based on movies I don't even really like.  I'd see it again voluntarily probably, but I know I'll be sick to death of it just as soon as it comes out on DVD because my boy will be watching it constantly.

Brooks' most recent success has been a transfer of his film The Producers to the Broadway stage. Brooks also had a vocal role in the 2005 animated film Robots. He is currently working on an animated series sequel to Spaceballs. Spaceballs: The TV Series is slated to premiere September 21, 2008 on G4 TV.

Re: Discussion - Star Wars, the Movies

That was edited to make Solo more "good"

In the original version, Solo was a badass and shot first, but then Lucas decided that made Solo too mercenary so in all the edited/remake editions, they edited in a blaster shot from Greedo, so instead of Solo being a bad-ass antihero, he turns into a goody-two shoes who can dodge blaster bolts at point blank range.

Just pretend you did not see Greedo firing first and everything is right in the Star Wars universe :D

And a TV Tropes:

It seems that that change was only made to get the DVDs past the ratings people, who'd gotten shirty about the scene. See George Lucas in his "Han Shot First" t-shirt.
