Who Would Win III

Two combatants are selected, such as Wolverine vs. Batman.  Then posters chime in about who would win in a fight and why.  After a number of comments, someone can change the combatants.

Of course, combatants don't have to be fighters in real life, although the competition is about who would win in a real fight.

The Topic is:

Rugby Players vs Hockey Players

and thats why you dont fuck with canadians if you like when your heads attached to your neck. In other news, kim jung il is the new canadian prime minister! YAY!!

There's no contest - TMNT ALL THE WAY!!! :D Seriously, not only do they have those protective shells, but their ninja skills are much better than the Power Rangers' skills because they've been training their entire lives! Oh, and if they ever need super awesome technical stuff, there's always Donatello to turn to. The turtles also don't need to rely on supernatural/alien/magical powers or technology in order to win! They're super kick-butt! Even if they don't win the first time, they're bound to the second or third time around!

Dumbledore: has many different spells in repertoire, can make new ones pending on timely warning and circumstances. has died already. not shy from fighting. lived a long life.

I think, if done right, it will coexist happily with the first, but the first will always be True Trek, because the rebooted universe could never have come about without the original to be twisted from.

Yes but Ultimate Nick Fury somehow sneaked into the movie continuity instead of regular Nick Fury.  I don't mind but it shows how the universes tend to blend rather than stay parallel.

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars

Are we even having this discussion?

Ok a rundown...

Star Trek has:

Transporters - the ability to teleport! Doh!
Phasers - beam weapons! How's a lightsaber going to deflect that?
The Borg - Assimilate the Death Star, conquer the universe
Species 8472 - alternate dimension beings, probably Force void, like those creatures from the X-Wing series. Can't touch them, and their weapons are powerful enough to crack entire planets. Like a swarm of living Death Stars, eek!
And a bunch of other stuff...

Star Wars has:

The Force - pretty cool, but since Return of the Jedi there's only a very small number of people who can wield it. So that doesn't help much.
Aaand that's pretty much it, post RotJ at least. Unless we're talking about Old Republic, then it's a different story.

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars

Ok a scenario to ponder...

Dimensional vortex opens between the worlds. Say the time setting is early Return of the Jedi on the SW side, post-Nemesis on the ST side. A Borg cube comes through the rift and sees the Death Star. The Imperial Guard freak out and shoot the Cube, destroying it with one shot. A while later another cube comes through, the Imperials shoot it too, but this time the Cube's adapted. The Death Star's weapon no longer penetrates its shields. The Borg then come and start transporting drones aboard the station, assimilating the crew. Pretty soon the Death Star is now a Borg vessel with thousands of new drones under the collective's control. The Emperor and Vader escape to join the Imperial fleet and fight to take it back.

Suddenly the Rebels show up, now it's a 3-way fight between the Empire, the Rebellion, and the Borg who currently control the Death Star. They're all wiping each other out when suddenly more ships come through the rift, led by a sleek starship called the Enterprise. It's about the same size as a Star Destroyer, but a lot faster. The Enterprise engages the Death Star while the Empire and Rebels move to opposite sides of the battlefield because the Emperor wants the Death Star back. He and Vader board the Death Star with a battallion of stormtroopers, trying to fight off the Borg while the Enterprise holds their attention outside. Soon it's lightsabers and force lightning versus drones. They successfully make it up to the control deck, only to have Luke Skywalker meet them there and fight to kill the Emperor. After Vader is incapacitated, Palpatine is standing there and suddenly the Borg Queen walks into the room. He's focused on killing Luke, and she walks up behind him and sticks an assimilation tubile in his neck. He collapses to the ground, leaving Vader and Luke to escape. The Borg Queen then beams the Emperor back to her Cube where he's assimilated and becomes a force-wielding super drone. The Collective now controls the Force, the Death Star, and goes on to PWN the universe.

The End?

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars

I'm betting that the Dark Side would override Borg control.  If they wired up the Emperor they'd become all corrupted and stuff.  If they could even wire him up... he could just jump into a spare clone or cackle mercilessly as lightning shot out of his you-know-what.

Also Jedi of any sort would have a pretty big advantage over anybody from the Star Trek universe.  The Federation and Borg would all stand around while the Jedi flipped all over the place chopping off limbs and knocking them off of unnecessarily perilous walkways (both universes are seriously lacking in basic industrial safety standards).  Even less mobile Jedi like Darth Vader can just deflect whatever kind of rays come at him.

But then again, the bad guys would only win if we suspended deus ex machina for both universes.

If we're sorting out which good guy would win then, assuming this was all compressed into a single movie, Starfleet would come out on top like they always do.  If nothing else the Enterprise can fix almost any problem by reversing the polarity of their deflector dish.  If the Enterprise crashes or is destroyed the new one will then proceed to soundly kick everyone's behind.

If it was a Trilogy I'm betting on the corrupted Borg winning for a movie or two, and then it's 50/50 whether the good guys from Star Wars manage to fix things by the third flick or run and hide for a few decades.

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars

Star Trek = all gadget based techie goodness, and a few handy aliens.

Star Wars = a ton of awesome aliens, a bunch of pirates, a massive Empire of cloned Jango Fets (get them some Boba Fet armor!!!), and Jedi & Sith & Wookies & lightsabers & stuff?

I think the main issue is the writing -- which would have worse writers?

Did anyone see that Star Trek: Nemesis movie where they were riding around in dune buggies shooting blasters?  Wow, talk about bad writing AND low budget!!

But what kind of crack was Lucas on for the last 3 Star Wars films?!?!?!  And why did he miscast "Anni", the weak-sauce Jedi who can't act and isn't intimidating?
It was obvious to me that Mike Tyson should've been cast as Anakin Skywalker, and the fake voice box was the last cyber addon!  Who would wanna mess with Tyson the Jedi?

As to this trilogy scenario:

Star Wars Empire (or possibly Rebellion) smash the Borg.
A bunch of Jedi's jump on the ship and force-blast the crap out of the Borg, and the Borg are all electrical so -- R2D2 gets in there and hacks their databases, and it's game over.

And maybe C3PO gets pulled in by Ms Baddie Borg and has to go thru the Data experience, where the the she-Borg leader grafts skin to him and gives him an emotion chip.  Then they peel back the tin and find an annoying British guy underneath the shiny stuff.
But by then I'm bored by the bad acting and horrible direction.

Did people notice there were no femme Borgs until 7 of 9?
I never saw any episodes which showed 1-6+8&9, but I sure wished I had!!  Wooo!

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars

It's pretty clear you Star Wars fanboys don't understand the power of a collective entity comprised of Trillions (yes you read that right) of minds all connected in a network that would put the internet to shame. I'm not a fan of the Borg, personally I'd prefer to see some Klingon vs Mandalorian action, or something along those lines. Talk about an epic battle. But I was using the Borg illustration to pretty much shut down the "who's better" argument.

Yes the Death Star was a weapon of immense power. It's beam could shatter planets. That is true. But even the Galactic Empire was limited in what it could do. The entire Imperial Navy was gathered together at the Battle of Endor, and all those Star Destroyers in their glorious might were still limited to less than a hundred. Ask yourself this, how do you fight an enemy with thousands of battleships, trillions of drones, nearly endless resources, and the ability to all communicate telepathically instantaneously? Because that's what they'd be dealing with if they faced a Borg invasion. Sure the Death Star could destroy a few Cubes. But they'll just keep coming. And what happens when the Borg start beaming drones onto Star Destroyers? Assimilating the crews and taking over control of the Imperial fleet? Then the Death Star has to start firing on its own ships to keep the infection from spreading. You see how quickly things would fall apart for the Empire? It would be game over in just 1 movie. wouldn't even need 3.

But instead of debating superpowers, it would be more interesting, and more realistic to talk about individual ship battles, or something like that.

How about:

USS Enterprise E vs. SSD Executor

a Klingon Vor'Cha Cruiser vs. a Corelian Cruiser

a Romulan D'deridex Warbird vs. a Mon Calimari Star Cruiser

USS Defiant vs. the Millenium Falcon

or others like this...

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars

I want to address the stupid, annoying, and ridiculous concept of "midi-chlorians", which Lucas added at some point to explain that which should not be explained.

While you'd think it means "particles that do X" and can be measured and so on, I choose to think that Jedis were so super-advanced at measuring the force that they made all kinds of devices to measure it, and also made a terminology for it, but basically ... midi-chlorians cannot be removed by teleporters.

That'd be like teleporting something onto a ship flying at warp.

Oh, they did that too?

Darned scifi writers -- don't they realize that just b/c something gets written it doesn't mean you can DO it?

Wait a sec, I think that same rule applies to splat-book authors (& gamers who buy all the splat books).

GM:  Sorry, you can't do that.
Player:  I can, my new character kit has a skill on pg 36 of the Splat Book which says I can.
GM:  No, you can't.  Go return the book, b/c it doesn't work in my world.

That's how I see it -- "midi-chlorians" don't work in my Jedi universe, darn it!

No, midi-chlorians are rejected!  They need to carry a 'rejected by fans everywhere' stamp!
:)

Actually (this logic may be strange), I rewatched the last few Star Wars movies bc I didn't want to hate them so badly.  I finally came away with an 'appreciation' which is something like:  they are B(- or worse) movies w/really bad writing, but A budgets.  One of the worst scenes IMO was Obi Wan going to the 'diner' to dog up intel from an old war buddy, while the 'naming the twins on her Deathbed' was also pretty shabby.  I'm interested to know what other scenes people thought marked the films as ... janky?

Despite ripping on SW & ST, I give endless props to the makers of the last Star Trek.  I watched the 'behind the scenes' and it made it all the better.  Just a lot of good writing, even though they took a good swipe at the Star Trek 'canon lore', explaining this was another dimension was pretty darned creative.  Plus, the orig Star Trek had dimension-hoped before, so it wasn't a huge deviation.

Rather than who'd beat whom, I'd love a team up of Yoda and Spock or Sarek, various Jedis w/various ST heroes, and Spock & Data.   :)

Rocks or boxes?

It's an old flash game, you can probably still find it if you google it. I think there's (probably) a couple of them, though, and I don't remember which ones I played at the time.

Probably the second, it's always the second, it seems.

Actually, I looked it up and I think it's the first. There's only two, which is surprisingly tame for a flash game (they were so bad they were good)

---

The idea of the 'quiz' is that it's really hard and requires 'out-of-the-box' (read: stupid) thinking. There's also a lot of meta stuff where you have to do weird stuff with the screen (that isn't just answering questions) to complete.

I won't spoil too much, but one level asks you to go between two blue circles, without crossing the red which kills you. It requires that you right click or exit the window somehow, and then move your mouse over while not technically in the game... It's pretty neat.

Beware: many many puns.

Anyway, the art style is unique and nostalgic, and it's pretty frustrating (you get 3 lives (for wrong answers), and can gain 'question skips', but some questions are unskippable)

if you die, the game restarts!

I still remember some of the answers, years later.

quote:
By the way, you can totally make rocks out of boxes.  Just apply a ridiculous amount of pressure

Considering the fact that it was the second wave of the Spanish Flu, (spread quickly in a famous European war,) that killed the most people and we are currently riding through the first wave of COVID-19, I can safely say that it is far too soon to ask this question.

Maybe in 2022, after we have a readily available vaccine. Hopefully, we aren't drawn into any world war in the interim.

They are both elderly individuals, this seems kind of in bad taste? My kind of taste! One time I ran a betting pool for a fighting ring in my granny's nursing home, but that's another story.

Anyway, the thing about these matches is it's down to chance, and if what they are allowed to bring with them... In this situation, I think trump would win because he would undoubtedly have the secret service in the front seats ready to intervene and take punches like they take bullets.

I vote: Inconclusive
