But I still have none of the WHY.

Whittaker announced that he would like to take everyone out for
dinner; both as a way of thanking everyone for their cooperation in
relating their story to him, and also as sort of a going-away party
for Darion. He planned to take the group to The Blue Boar Tavern.
Despite its name, the establishment is one of the finest restaurants
in the city. Whittaker would, of course, treat them all.

So the next day, Nira, Valla, Zook, Darion and Ignis spent most of the
day shopping for some fine clothes to wear to this elegant dinner.
Whittaker educated them on the fashion of nobility in the city, and
helped them all pick out finery appropriate for the occasion. Nira and
Valla both chose beautiful gowns. Nira decided to wear a mithral shirt
hidden under the gown, and also her gloves of storing just in case.
She had taken some time during the past month to create some expensive
and beautiful jewelery. So she wore her platinum necklace studded with
diamonds, worth 10,000gp, and her 500gp platinum bangles.
Zook and Darion dressed in the height of fashion for noble gentlemen,
while Ignis used alter self to assume a similar appearance. Even old
Whittaker had combed his hair and swapped out his ordinary mouse-brown
scholars robes for a fine silk garment.

Thus attired, the group set out proudly for the high-class area of
town. They left the house just as the street lamps were being lit for
the evening, and strolled through the warm summer night towards "Snob
Hill", where the restaurant was located.
As they got into the high-class part of the city, the houses started
to look very fancy, and the street was littered with fine carriages,
and noble ladies and gentlemen strolling about. The Blue Boar Tavern
was located at the very top of Snob Hill, and the group had never seen
a finer building. Although an eating establishment, The Blue Boar had
the look of a nobles mansion. A stuffy doorman greeted them at the
entrance, and after Whittaker gave his name and reservation, they were
shown inside. The common chamber was as grand and lavishly decorated
as the waiting room at a king's ball. The interior was paneled in
rare, imported woods, hung with purple curtains and carpeted with
soft, maroon rug. The walls were decorated with expensive oil
paintings by famous artists, framed in gold leaf and lacquer.
Beautiful marble statues and delicate vases added a further touch of
beauty, while a small group of musicians played soft, soothing
melodies on stringed instruments. The dim, candlelit dinner chamber
practically exuded a sense of class.

As the group was led across dinner chamber, they saw the other tables
seated members of the noble class, whose extravagant clothing made
them feel self-conscious about their own dress which they had earlier
though so much of.
The doorman led them down one of a series of narrow, wood-paneled
hallways full of doors lined on either side. They were shown inside
one of the doors, and found that Whittaker had reserved a private
dining chamber for them. The were led around a grand table and seated
in high-backed chairs cushioned in red velvet. A sharply-dressed
serving staff of four waiters were already standing at the four
corners of the room, waiting. The maitre'de came in and spoke
eloquently to them about the night's menu. There were three 12-course
meal sets for them to choose from that night - boar, duck and salmon.
Nira, Valla, Zook and Ignis choose the boar, while Darion and
Whittaker had the salmon. Whittaker went all out and ordered a bottle
of the most expensive wine in the house, a very old elven vintage.

The shrimp appetizers were brought in (served on exotic imported ice)
and the wine served and poured. (The cork was presented to Whittaker
first so he could approve of the aroma.) This done, the serving staff
of two waiters and two waitresses stood attentively yet discreetly in
the corners of the room, waiting in case the party needed anything.
Whittaker stood up and proposed a toast. "To Darion! We wish you
success in your research, luck in your adventures, and good health
during your travels."
"To Darion!" the whole group echoed, and raised their glasses high. As
they toasted to Darion, they all touched their glasses together, and
the crystal goblets made a soft, high-pitched "ting" sound. But then,
something strange happened.

Update:  Okay, never mind, this song is a lot harsher then I remember.

The ringing sound of the crystal began to echo throughout the chamber,
growing louder and louder. The sound became so strong that it made
one's head hurt. The loud ringing reached a horrible crescendo as
nearly everyone in the room started to black out from the painful
noise. Only Valla was able to shake off the effect, so only Valla
could look around the room at the faces of
everyone else with their eyes rolled back in their heads, bodies
slightly convulsing; their wine glasses lay spilled and broken on the
table. Even the waiting staff stood slumped against the wall.

"Nira! Nira wake up!" Valla ran to her sister's side and tried to
shake her awake, though it had no effect. She went to the door and
looked out down the hallway. But the other customers in the common
room seemed to be unaware of the commotion, and went on eating and
talking. She spotted a waiter going the other direction and
frantically called him over. When he saw the state of the people in
their room, he became frightened and immediately ran to the kitchen to
fetch the head waiter.

Meanwhile, Valla looked back at the table behind her and saw that one
of the waiting staff, a pretty half-elven woman, had awakened from her
trance and had stumbled groggily up against the back of Nira's chair.
Valla went to her sister's side, but as she did, something unthinkable
happened. The female waitresses' head abruptly changed before her very
eyes. Instead of a half-elven face the head became something like the
head of a slimy green octopus. The woman's clothing burst open about
the neck and four oily, gray-green tentacles sprang forth and wrapped
themselves about Nira's face. Valla did not recognize the beast as a
mind-flayer, and could only scream in terror as the monster smothered
Nira with the ends of its tentacles forcing their way for purchase
into her sister's nose, eye and mouth cavities. The creature's
dripping tentacles then constricted and started to pull apart the back
of Nira's head. As her skull split open, a lamprey-like appendage shot
out of the creature's mouth and began to feast on the gray matter
inside her head. Valla watched in horror as the monster slurped up all
of Nira's brains, and even sucked the eyeballs out the back of her
skull. With the feeding complete, the monster released is hold on Nira
and stepped over behind Ignis to do him next. Nira's body slumped over
sideways in her chair.

"NOOOOOOO!!!!!" Valla screamed and flew at the creature, pummeling it
with her fists in a blind fury. The creature died instantly from the
rage-induced power of Valla's attack. Her final kick sent the
monster's body flying across the room where it slammed against the
mahogany paneled wall and dropped to the floor. Even though it was
dead, Valla's rage blinded her to all else but her foe, and she leaped
after the illithid and beat its corpse to a bloody pulp. Her vision
blurred by red mist, Valla continued to obliterate this creature which
had killed her sister until the head waiter returned with the doorman,
the bouncer, and several chefs and had to pull her off the creature.

About this time, the others in the room came out of their trance and
looked in shock at the dreadful scene around them. Although they had
been vaguely conscious of what was going on around them, they were
helpless during their coma. But now the full impact of the grisly
scene hit them. Whittaker saw poor Nira with the back of her skull
ripped apart and began to shake his head and moan miserably in his old
man voice, "Oh no... no no no... How could a thing like this happen?"
Ignis reminded Valla that they should get out of here in case more of
these things arrived, and seek the help of Father Asher. The bouncer
insisted that they wait until the town guard arrive, but Valla was
charged with the urge to help her dead sister. She told Ignis, "Do it,
now! Get all of us out of here right away!"
Ignis grabbed his companions and the two corpses and instantly
teleported out of the restaurant.

Some 400 miles away in the town of Waymeet, the group reappeared in
the church of Cassius where they had met Father Asher earlier that
week. Since it was nighttime on a weekend, the church was closed up
for the night and none of the order were to be found. But Valla
immediately took up her sister's body and ran through the church
shouting at the top of her lungs for someone to summon Father Asher. A
pair of young acolytes soon responded to the ruckus and led Valla to
the Father's quarters.
Father Asher was already in his nightcap and gown, and the sight of a
tearful and bloodstained Valla standing in his doorway holding the
disfigured corpse of Nira was shocking even to an experienced cleric
like him. The good Father had the acolytes take Nira's body to lay it
upon the altar, while Valla tearfully and breathlessly related the
story to him. Father Asher had Valla sit down and tried to calm her
while he started to wipe the blood off her with a damp rag, all the
while wondering what should be done.

In the meantime, Ignis and the others began to search the body of the
illithid which they had brought along with them. Among the creature's
gear, Ignis located four iron spikes that bore the emblem of the cult
of Essex imprinted on their head. It didn't take long for the party to
figure out that the illithid was an assassin sent by the cult to kill
them.
The threat of the Essex cult, it seemed, did not end with Faustus.
