Re: Didn't You Get the Memo? II
To: To Whom it May Concern
Memo: This was prompted by a question in the Questions Game, but I wanted to give multiple people a chance to discuss and respond to it.
St. Thomas Aquinas postulated that there is such a thing as a "just war". But, George Washington cautioned us that those people (Washington was actually talking about Europe, but I feel it applies here) fight wars with each other relatively frequently and to embroil ourselves so intimately in their affairs can't produce a lasting peace -- it will only stretch our armies and ability to respond elsewhere. That being said, was Hussein a bad person? Undeniably, yes. He raped people, He had rape rooms in his palace. He boiled people alive. Seriously, he was a very, very, evil man. Am I, personally, happy to see him toppled? Yes, I am. Do I think the situation over there could have been handled a little better? I think it could have been handled a lot better -- Gen. Colin Powell's principles of war and the lessons we so bitterly learned in history have been largely ignored.
