IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

Would there be any interest in a 5e D&D game using the 1e AD&D G series adventures?

PCs would start at 8th level. The focus of the game would be combat with some exploration. There would be little role-playing but when it does come up, it would be important.

I would need five or six players. I would have pre-gen characters available but would allow custom characters who fit into the game.

I'm not certain I'll be running this, I just want to see if there is sufficient interest for me to put some effort into doing the basic setup for such a game.

Be warned, Against the Giants is a deadly set of adventures. And further warning, my schedule limits me to posting four times a week or so. As such, I would be asking for a commitment of three posts per week per player.

Hmm.

I'm interested, but I'm not sure I'm ready yet to go about making level 8 characters for 5e.

I'd be interested, but this would be my first actual game playing with 5th edition rules.  I'd very much like to learn though.

I'd be interested. I like 5e, and 3-4 times a week is the magic number for my posting rate.

Sign me up!

I have no experience with 5e though so pregen characters would be cool.

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

That's sufficient interest for me to start looking at doing this. I will put up additional posts as I make my way through the process.

This will likely start up in about two weeks. I need the time to get pre-gen characters made and convert the first adventure from 1e to 5e.

Oh, if there is more interest in a role-play focused game, I could look at the U1-3 adventures set in Saltmarsh.

In reply to JxJxA (msg # 10):

I admit to being curious how it would play out.  I've not been the most impressed with 5th ed - bought the PHB, gave it a good looking over, decided I would probably stick with Pathfinder over it, but I should be fair to it and give it at least one test run.

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

I don't know anything about either of those adventures mentioned.  But if I were playing in the game, it would be more for learning the rules and less for the role-playing parts.  Of course, there's lots of interest so I wouldn't presume to make decisions that would affect everyone.

I'd adore playing this series in D&D 5E.

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

I'm continuing to work on getting this ready. I should be able to have it ready to start up late next week. Currently my plan is to put up a Wanted - Players thread on Saturday the 13th.

I'm finishing up the pre-gen characters and getting the Hill Giant Steading ready. Some of the encounters will be deadly if I just translate directly. Of course they were deadly back in 1st edition.

The Great Hall is the worst. There are 29 giants, 8 ogres, and a cave bear in that one room. I still remember my halfling thief hiding as the party charged into the slaughter. And no, his joining in wouldn't have made a difference. They took down a giant before falling.

So, I think that I'm going to do my best to keep the same feel without being quite that brutal. Unless you all would prefer the original rooms of doom.

The original tournament characters were all over the place in power. Most were level 9, but there where four in the level 12 to 14 range.

Initially I was looking at level 8 pre-gen characters, but I think I'm going to bump that up to level 10. And I'm going to be generous regarding magic items.

The only way to win the battle of the main room is to enlist help within the Steading.

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

Yeah, that's true. Sadly back in the day, my fellow players didn't do that. At all.

Still, even with help that is a challenging fight. But it can be done. I still think I need to up the level of the PCs to 10 rather than 8 as initially thought. I plan on the PCs making a level at the end of each adventure. So, level 11 against the frost giants and finally 12 when against the fire giants.

Chances to take short and long rests are going to be somewhat limited during the adventures. To take a rest, the party will likely have to retreat and hunker down. As the adventures note, this gives the giants a chance to prepare as well.

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

You have to be very sneaky and smart in those adventures.  The giants if played well are brutally powerful.

You need lots of rangers with two handed giant slaying swords and girdles of giant strength!  :)

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

Typically I play the hill giants as rather dimwitted and easy to out maneuver. The frost and fire giants are another story however. And 5e completely backs me up in this.

Yea, good point.  The Fire Giants are supposed to be especially tough.

I think as long as you don't blunder into the middle of the giants and wave a red flag you can probably do a fair job.

Also, this series leads into the classic D series!

So, are we doing this?

Re: IC: D&D 5e Against the Giants

I should be putting up the Players Wanted thread this weekend. I'm currently wrapping up creation of the pre-gen characters and getting some of the early encounters worked out as well.

Chances are I won't run the D series unless this goes really well. I admit I'm very curious as to how well 5e holds up in the mid-levels.
