Character Creation Thread - dlantoub: Leviathan

The Watcher:
OK, having added some character creation notes (and learning y'all are so bright you didn't really need them in the first place... ;-) ), y'all can go ahead and start a character creation thread for your character(s).

You might copy and past what you have already written into the thread.  Don't worry about formal character creation just yet.  You can just write in plain text and you don't need more than a paragraph at present.

That said, if you do know the Mask rules, you can formally stat them.  I should have formal character sheets up in a day or two.

Character Creation Thread - dlantoub :)

Anything that you want The Watcher to know about your character, please copy it over to your character creation thread, rather than relying upon him to track down info in any other public or private thread.  He has taken on a populous game, so the easier we can make it for him, the sooner we can get up and running.  Many thanks. :)

Character Creation Thread - dlantoub: Leviathan

Concept 1: The basic concept is; Her parents were genetic scientists, probably SHIELD but possibly not, who experimented on their unborn child, fusing her with DNA from an ancient Atlantean artifact/fossil.

Basically if she is exposed to water for long periods, she becomes more and more like an undersea monster.

What she knows about her powers at this point, her bones are really strong.
She can breathe underwater.
If her skin is exposed to water she develops a covering of hard scales at the location, which slowly fade over time. Walking around in the open air doesn't do it. But doing the dishes or washing her hands will.

If not heroic enough, can try other concepts

Not sure what playbook to use at this point, which is why I am hoping I can be more fluid and come up with other concepts depending on the situation.

Character Creation Thread - dlantoub: Leviathan

dlantoub:
@von_das
Now this is interesting. Assuming my character keeps going on the same mould (not changing playbook), maybe my characters parents contributed to some of your research and vice versa. Although maybe from opposite ends :)

von_das:
I'm not sure how connected her family is to the wider super science community... but then again, some of her distant relatives are a different story. Genetic science isn't exactly her or her father's speciality, but of course plenty of genetic variants seem to feature abnormal energy generation (see: lots of mutants, but I'm sure there are other examples too), so I wouldn't count it out entirely...

dlantoub:
True, but bio-energy is your sphere, and at some point that will link back to genetics, either natural or synthetic. What pool of genes directly creates the most bio-energy?

So.. if you hear about an actual experiment to create a sentient biological weapon, you might be offering information on how much bio-energy might be needed to create x-effect; and of course be interested in how much energy is generated by their test subject.

After all the most obvious example in nature of bio energy is.. the electric eel, and some sharks may have something similar.

von_das:
Good points all. :) I think that's definitely a plausible connection, though I'll need to think some more about the backstory before I decide how to fit it in exactly.

Name: Abigail Pryce
Nickname: Abigail, Abi
Superpowered alias: (not yet active) Leviathan, Levi for short.

Basic concept: Genetically manipulated.
Proposed playbook: Transformed (Thank you Krazny for the suggestion; also been theory crafting how Outsider would work)

Current thoughts:
Abigail was a happy child, although being the child of respected scientists was annoying. Everyone expected her to be as smart as they were, and her teachers despaired that she was not "reaching her potential".

Her parents always asked her wierd questions. "Did anything unusual happen today?" The answer was always "No." Except when another child pushed her down the stairs. "I got pushed down the stairs today, aren't you supposed to break a bone when that happens?"

Indeed, her parents seemed to be getting more and more concerned until just a few months before her admittance to the school.

She had fever for a week, and when she came out of it, she had lost all of her hair, and her skin had grown into rock hard scales.

Her traumatic (for her at least) change did not extend to her not needing glasses. And her parents decided to surprise her with an invitation to a school which they said would help come to terms with her new status.

What she knows at the current time. Her scales and skeleton make her almost immune to conventional injury. Other people with superpowers probably don't count as conventional.

She came to the academy for her parents, and because she would no longer for in in a conventional school.

She joined the team half by choice and half because her homeroom teacher hinted that her grades might take a dive if she didn't, conveniently leaving out the bit that heroic work would probably cause them to drop anyway.

Abilities:
Impenetrable Armour
I think; Transmutable Flesh
Inhuman Strength was too obvious, and supernatural senses defeats the purpose of her being bald at start of play. She will probably acquire both at some point.

Hopefully, Transmutable Flesh will have the potential of the Swimming Pool Incident (she doesn't know water makes her grow yet).

Is relationship with players or NPC's, it did say in the book, but I can't remember.

If NPC's: definitely her parents, but they might be distant unless there's a parents day or something. Alfonse Coda, they boy who pushed her down the stairs. Umm Kylie Leda and January Risk (damn I'm going to have to remember that name for another heroine) who were her childhood friends.

Who outside the team helps keep her centred.  Maybe the academy psychologist/mentor/studybuddy. No idea.

Relationships and Influence are always with PCs; that's how the team dynamic is created.

First: what does supernatural senses have to do with her hair? Not seeing a connection.

Second: while the relationships on the sheet should definitely be with other PCs, absolutely write up any NPCs you have connections to as well. And remember, all adults automatically have Influence over you. The more NPCs you design, the more chance we have to be connected to them and for the GM to introduce them into scenes. It can't always just be us and the villains, after all. :D

All her hair fell out as part of her transformation, l envisioned her supernatural senses so tge receptors grow where her hair was, and they will (when she grows them) appear to have a life of their own.

I'm envisioning a "final form" if you like somewhere between Lady Vashj from Warcraft and Neo-Daedalus from YuGiOh. But if she ever gets there, that would mean she is in serious trouble.

Character Creation Thread - dlantoub: Leviathan

Re: not being heroic enough, personally I think it's interesting that she is basically a normal person who never asked for any of this. It seems fitting for a Transformed, and she can find a more heroic motivation along the way (or else retire - that's an option for a reason).

The dynamics between our characters could definitely be interesting if we are on the same team, regardless of what we decide for the backstory. Perhaps Svetlana's father really did help Abi's parents with their research, and maybe they kept in touch afterwards, to the point of allowing their daughters to be pen pals? It could help explain Svetlana's generally good English, among other things. Just an idea, though.

By the way, does she know what was done to her?

So how about the pen pal idea? It could be a neat early connection, I think. On the other hand I am not sure if they would have many interests in common growing up, and Svetlana could be a little short on tact even now, to say nothing of her younger years. So even if it happened they may have drifted apart or fallen out since then.

There are a lot of questions that I can see about Leviathan.  But all of the answers that I can see work for the game.  So, one way or another, 'Levi' will fit in just fine.  I am just not sure exactly how yet. ;-)

P.S. I am thinking, oddly enough, of Gremlins, don't get this hero wet. :-D

This always seems to be my problem with characters. They always seem to have too many questions, or are fundamentally flawed in other ways.

I don't think questions are a bad thing so long as you can answer them. It means you have an interesting concept that seems worth asking about. :)

This is a Powered By the Apocalypse system. If no one's asking you questions, you need to make more reason to. :P Asking and answering questions is how we fill out our concepts and expand the world. Once the questions run out, it's like running out of canvas space when trying to paint. You've got a great concept, we're just asking questions to help you come up with places where you can keep bringing the awesome.

@Counterforce Penpal idea sounds great! Although you may get frustrated at having to keep your words about as simple as chicken (relatively for you). It might mean Levi knows a bit of Russian, after all, it's disrespectful not to know some of your friends language. Even if it's only enough to say I don't speak Russian.

It's only become noticeable in the last month or so, so probably not. She might have mentioned the fall down the stairs as in.

Still working on Levi sheetwise. And my mind is idling over a possible Outsider secondary.

Mainly because I want a kirby-craft. Even if it keeps getting destroyed, because let's face it, unless machines are an integral part of the character (ghost rider), they fire a worf barrage, and then get disabled/destroyed; or are glorified taxis.

I can't come up with a decent story for them yet.

Name: Abigail Pryce (Leviathan)
Age: 13 (12 in thread 0)
Playbook: Transformed

Look: Bald; scaled; glasses
She wears clothes others consider frumpy to try and hide as much of her scales as possible
Costume: currently none

Abilities:
Impenetrable Armour (her scales, and bones are capable of withstanding the water pressure at the abyss level of the ocean)

Transmutable Flesh (Her biogical functions are still developing, expected transmutations [by me] are the ability to swim and breathe underwater, gaining mass during prolonged exposure to water, and other sea creature adaptations maybe squid ink, poisonous spines, bioluminescence etc.)

Moves:
I am not my body
Unstoppable
Wish I could be

Concept 2 (not that I'm going to need it)

Name: Mina
Gender: Female
Race: (haven't worked this out yet)
Concept/playbook: Outsider

Daughter of the (current) president of the Miner's Guild, shortly after passing her driving test she crashed her 'car' on earth.

Abilities:
Alien weapons: Hammer of justice! Usually disguised as a squeaky rubber toy hammer. She can, with a push of a button, deploy it into a proper weapon, a rocket propelled hammer. The hammer is actually her mole machine miniaturised.

Moves:
Kirby-craft Mina's car is a huge intergalactic mole machine. It travels in space by effectively creating it's own wormhole and driving along it.

With a bonus Advance which could be used to buy a Move from another Playbook, I think Levi will be easier to build than you might think. She is welcome to the game.  You don't have to do anything else for now. :-)

Levi, you mentioned in the OOC thread about needing help with the sheet? I'm not sure what all you need, but you mentioned your Labels specifically. I can definitely start there.

Your Playbook will tell you your starting Labels, and then you can increase one of them by +1. Here's where they start:

Danger +1
Freak +3
Savior +0
Superior -1
Mundane -1

One of those gets to go up by one point. An important consideration is that your Labels are mostly about how you see yourself, rather than any inherent ability or power rating. They're going to fluctuate a lot through play as you grow, change, or get changed by others.

It looks like you've already nailed down your Look, Abilities, Backstory, and Moves down. All that's left are your Relationships, Influence, and When Our Team First Came Together. Need any help with those?
