Introducing Acme and Hellfire!

While I normally run a one-on-one to flesh out the character concept, these two concepts compliment/contrast nicely so they will start off in a two player prelude.

He is, good eye.

"Nomads" is probably too romantic a word for a pack of itinerant agg workers and self described "free men", but it's what they would choose. Hard to find decent paying work without a SIN of course.

They dabble in whatever might make some Nuyen, vehicle repair, construction, etc.

His particular Clan has some strong ecological principals baked into their culture. And they have a few among their number would would probably pop up as "eco terrorists" in the right databases.

So I worked a 07:00HRS to 19:00HRS today. The day started well with only a few minor annoyances. Until around 16:00HRS when I was tasked with working close protection for 4 of the real housewives of New Jersey. (Semi-Reality T.V. Show) this led me to be engulfed in one of the most colossal shit shows I have ever had the misfortune of attending with highlights such as "I am deathly afraid of elevators what do you mean I have to escort her to the penthouse to touch up her eyeliner?" And "Well sir society has rules we live by and it is common practice to wait in line for your turn, I understand you paid $600 for a meet and greet but unfortunately so did the other 419 people in the event." Or "No you can't drink here, Ontario has shit liquor laws." And after everything, shit was still hitting the fan and I just had to leave at 19:30hrs

Everyone has a bad day

A couple things about Shamans in Sixth World -

Totem: Coyote comes with the boons and flaws I've added to your sheet.  If you want a more traditional approach where Coyote gives neither advantages nor disadvantages, I'm certainly open to changing it.

Spirits: You can start with a degree of comfort/knowledge in summoning three types of spirits.  You're not limited to nature spirits and can learn to conjure elementals and idols as well.  You gain knowledge of other spirits through research/roleplay.

Spells: once you level, you have the opportunity to "multiclass" which will give you access to spell casting.

Before I start posting extensively IC please can I check what approach you want with swearing? I note that Frag has been used several times in other preludes so do you want me to stick to the PG13 language in Shadowrun (Frag, Drek, etc) or are we ok to use "proper" swearwords? Kord is a soldier so the bad language going to be quite extensive at points and I want to ensure that it fits with the rest of your expectations for the game.

I'm happy either way - I just wanted to double check.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Looking at some of the character ideas that have come up (or may come up) there are a lot of questions about gear - it is SR after all.

In a dice light, no initiative, no modifiers combat system there are a lot of implants, augments, weapons parts and gear that actually have no impact in terms of game mechanics (eg. attention coprocessor, synaptic booster, muscle augmentation or toner, image enhancement, recoil comp, silencers or supressors, extended clips... the list goes on).  Feel free to add them to your character and RP the 'effects' but in terms of mechanics, this is all cosmetic.  You can do the same for just about any implant or piece of gear - just RP it out.  Since I do the rolls, I`ll only add buffs or nerfs for the stuff you have actually 'paid' for in chargen or aquired through advancement and legwork.

Same goes for a lot of the magic accessories like lodge materials, reagents and fetishes.  Foci are different however and will provide an in game effect (usually boosted for a specific spell casting or conjuring activity).  Formulae are also purchasable gear or can be acquired through research.

Data jacks with image link are almost entirely universal and can add color to a character as well.  Whether you RP reading a mission chip or reviewing target dossiers on your laptop, wrist comp, the back of your mirrorshade computer display or projected directly onto your retina, it`s all good.

A question regarding SINs. If my character was born SINless and didn't obtain one until he was an adult does that mean that he couldn't have gone to school as a child?

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

@Kord: SINless would only receive formal education in a community style school or through home schooling. The curriculum wouldn’t be recognized for things like college or university, but that doesn’t make it any less of an education. Take the People’s University in Berkeley CFS... they crowd source instructors for all kinds of subjects and run university level programs in politics, economics, engineering, science and magic.  They also offer college style courses in mechanics, technology, small business management and even some “grey market” instruction in decking or rigging.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

You probably noticed some setting notes creeping into the Shadowlands // BayPlex thread. I’ll continue to post atmosphere, rumours and red herrings in there from time to time.

For the RL month of Feb (or what’s left of it anyway) each character may post once about some aspect of life in the BayPlex. What courses are being offered up next semester in Berkeley?  What is the hottest nightclub in Oakland?  Are there rumours of secret BART stations where black market activity is happening?  A hot Silicon Valley start-up?  Street racing?  Underground fight clubs?  Illegal talismongers?

For 1XP throw up a post that tells us whats going on in this city!

Use my Getting Around article as an example... or don’t..I’m not fussy).

And don’t worry about SR canon or checking in with me for approval... it’s social media... half of what’s on there is lies and exaggeration anyway...

@Acme - I took a stab at an intro post for you in Mayhem and Mistletoe... feel free to run with it or to retcon if you want a more specific reason for being sent to the BayPlex.  I figure the shamans (really Hestaby) are putting agents in place but it’s too early for them/her to reveal the true reason for interest in the city. It seems obvious though that Hestaby would want to support the fight for metahuman rights and environmental protection.

@Hellfire: just a quick answer on the payout. I’ll build on your question to Pearlman once others post up.

On payouts, I consider the following:
(1) Base pay - usually no less that your Rep x 1000
(2) Lifestyle - if you can’t pay off your bills with a single run, why bother being a criminal?
(3) Legality - risking arrest and jail time comes at premium cost
(4) Threat - dodging bullets should be expected, but it shouldn’t come cheap
(5) Duration - usually broken down by day, you need to get paid for preparation and time on task
(6) Second Chances - taking advantage of a fleeting opportunity comes at premium cost
(7) Weirdness - dodging bullets should be expected, but tangling with blood mages and vampires will cost Mr J a bit extra

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Mr. Johnson:
Debts and Favours

In character you can trade off debts and favours for additional XP.

For example: if Kord gives Hellfire the two microskimmers he just got from GEI:
- Kord takes +1 XP immediately
- Hellfire owes Kord a Debt/Favour

When Hellfire eventually pays off the debt, both take another +1 XP.

Hellfire - do you want to do this and have Kord obtain two microskimmers for you to use in return for a favour. The favour element, in my mind, is because Kord can arrange for Hellfire to keep them.

What do you think? It's quite a nice way to build a link between our characters.

Apparently if everyone I'd present for a session, it works really well. But it is not designed to mimic concepts like play by post. You can't just "leave it running" and come back to it a few times a day, so to speak.

That was my understanding at least.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Thank you all for the input. Play by post is my jam but I wanted move more into slightly faster gaming sessions especially moving forward at work where I will have several hours of down time. (The perks of the overnight security guard lol) my main thing is I can't really use a mic at home because my house is a zoo. I prefer texting. So any game I play would have to have a chat support unless I am at work.

Everyone else could talk but I would prefer to type. Maybe i am too fussy lol.

@Mr. J: I use TTS for warhammer 40k, the work modelers have put in making the models is just fantastic. The tables on the workshop are designed specifically to make playing easier. It isn't as good as playing with my real life models but It is pretty awesome and the freedom to play any time is a big selling point.

Also I have a customized Starfinder table that is fantastic. I intend to eventually run the against the Aeon throne adventure path (if I can find ppl who don't mind reading lol.) So I spent a couple hours converting the first 3 battle maps into 3D which is totally F'ing awesome if I do say so myself. I also created some cool pseudo 3D pawns using GIMP.

There is like 100000+ mods for it on the steam workshop some of them are old and have broken assets but most are usable.

TTS has a hot seat mode so my son and I were discussing playing some Star wars imperial assault or legion both of which have great boards and communities.

Sorry to go on but I really love table top simulator.

I am in my element. Usually I get grumpy because my days off quickly fill up with "doing stuff" Like visiting family or going to X place. My wife is a super germaphobe so her anxiety is through the roof every time we have to leave the house which means we don't leave the house much. Yesterday was grocery day so we put in our pick up order at Walmart. We only had to speak to 1 person who brought us our groceries. We asked them to stand back while my wife and I loaded the trunk (Made the associates job a little easier :) ) Then we had to head across the parking lot to the pet store for pet food. My wife went in alone. The store was empty she got pet food and a frog for our community tank on a whim. Well today the frog died, Turns out that is super common because they stress out easy. So we had to go back today to return it. The place was PACKED. Again my wife went in alone while the kids and I stayed in the car. The place was full of old people walking around petting each others dogs. Standing close to each other talking, like it was some kind of weird hang out. She said it was like something out of a nightmare. "Oh what a cute dog, what kind is it?" "it is a dog of DEATH lady get the hell away. Stupid plague barer." geez!

Here is the Starfinder table with map active. I did not make the table it is a workshop subscribe. I did assemble the map though using the one from the AP as a base.

Also, am I reading this correctly that Angela uses the online handle Angel or is it just a typo?

Damn deckers and their geek speak... an SK is a semi autonomous know bot; a complex program agent capable of endured matrix presence particularly suited to repeated tasks where a simple filter would miss important information.

The decker crowd at GEI all have nicknames, so it’s a safe assumption that she uses the handle Angel... but unless you ask her outright or get a ‘jack and get on the grid, you’ll never know for sure...

I just want to take a minute to offer an apology. My commitment to the game has been put on the back burner the last 3 days due to the stress levels in life. The outside world has interfered with me and I haven't been able to get into the head space to enjoy anything let alone this game. On the bright side. I was approved for a 2 week vacation so I can stay home and focus on what is important to me. I hope to return to a head space where I can up my posts. Again sorry.

Updated the public game description and the Welcome to the Shadows thread with the text below.  Each of these bullets correspond to a plot line represented on the sprawl's doom bar.  Each run the PCs take part in will reveal details along one or more of these storylines.  Hope you like it!

...a rogue senior officer is consolidating his power and waiting for his opportunity to take control of the occupation army.

...a corporate war is brewing behind the scenes as two megacrops vie for the same lucrative security contract.

...smaller and less influential gangs covet the power and wealth of one particular yakuza clan.

...a secret cabal of magicians considers making a deal with a particularly nasty demon.

...under the oppression of occupiers and incompetence of elected officials, racial tension is reaching the boiling point.

...lost in a wild and feral part of the matrix, a new born struggles to survive while her father sends out his minions to find her.

Did some housekeeping:

(1) Rearranged the stuff for new players and RTJ information into the Welcome to the Shadows thread.

(2) Put the doom bar, sprawl dynamics (perils and crisis) along with a summary of plotlines together under The Sprawl thread.

(3) Took all the mechanics stuff that we've worked through so far and made an OOC Mechanics thread.  Feel free to ue this thread for discussion of PbtA mechanics and house rules.

Just in case you’re waiting for me to chime in, I thought your preferred option was run and gun... my only questions were:

- is Hellfire driving to give you better shots for Kord and Grendel or focussing in dodging go-gang bullets?
- do you shoot first, give them a warning shot or try to stare them down?
- will you pick a side and selectively target Ronin riders or Razor Wires riders?

Just to be clear with my last IC post, I'm just sounding out opinions on how to proceed before Kord starts a full on firefight. My thought is to drop a grenade amongst them, probably targeting the Ronin more, to try to damage their vehicles and make it easier for Hellfire to get us clear. Does that sound like a plan? Are people happy with that?

The risk is that it prompts them to join together and both attack the limo......

I could add the transceivers to your PocSec (they are already tracked in Hellfire’s PocSec as they belong to him).

As long as you get the grenade in properly and only splatter Ronin, there should be no chance of the gangs working together.  Even if you do catch some Razors in the blast, chances are it will become a three way Runners vs Ronin vs Razors free for all!

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

The way I see it, They are going to perforate the limo regardless of what we do. A few warning shots might make them evaluate what they are doing and slow the hell down to let us get away. from their perspective, we aren't stopping to join the fight we are hustling away.

So there are really two types of options we can take, We can shoot a couple of warning shots with the intent to purposely miss.

Pros:
-We are showing that they are getting too close and we can, and will, defend ourselves.
-We haven't actually caused them any damage so we are not a direct threat.
Cons:
-We are drawing direct attention to the nice shiny limo that is obviously full of MONEY. TARGET ACQUIRED!!!
-By missing we may appear to be amateurs, They might start thinking we are easy picking and come after us fo the haul.

Or we can do at at them and either damage their gear or perhaps kill some of them.
Pros:
-We let them know we are playing for keeps this may make them think we are not worth the trouble.
-Could also start them wondering which super rich person are they going to piss off who would want retribution.

Cons:
-If we damage or kill them we made it personal. They might decide their street cred is more important then their life.

I think that’s two leaning slightly in favour of solving problems with a grenade launcher (Kord, Hellfire) with one still silent in the matter (Grendel) and one inactive (Acme).

I’ll let it stew for another day and if no one else chimes in, I’ll roll some dice and blast some Ronin!

There's nothing like a nice grenade to show people who's boss, and doing nothing would also show that you're a weak target, even if you miss they might think that was an intended warning shot.

Fixed damage accounting in Mayhem and Mistletoe.  For the record:

-Vehicles take half damage from small arms.
-Anything left over is split between passengers... first damage is applied to passengers actively taking part in combat, then to other passengers.
-Kord and Grendel have enough armor that neither took damage from the hits they received...

...for stacking armor, I calculate based on full value of the highest armor rating plus 1 point for stacked armor (regardless of the value of any other pieces or armor that are worn).

...in this case since the gang aren’t loading armor piercing ammo and the limo soaked up much of the damage none of the PCs took damage. Tread carefully, chummers, without the limo soaking up bullets and with different ammo this may have been a deadly encounter!

Great!  Look forward to picking up your dinner date with Jenny in H2Ostage Situation... I’m sure it will be an uneventful evening!

I’ll give the rest of the players a week or so to respond to my rMails... if I don’t hear back, I’ll post up looking for new players to take over the orphans. If anyone has contacts with any of the old players in other games, please don’t hesitate to let them know we are up and running again.  I was lurking on a game that Kord was running, but it seems like he has dropped off RPOL for awhile now - such is life.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Hi all, please welcome a new player who will be taking over Venom. That doesn’t help us get Mayhem and Mistletoe moving again since Venom is in a solo thread, but the more the merrier!

@Venom
Welcome! You should be able to see Venom’s PocSec which has all the character info developed so far. Venom was a fairly new character so there are still quite a few blanks to fill in. You’re in a solo thread called Trust but Verify.  It’s a Prelude thread where we were RPing through some character construction details. You can’t make mistakes that get you killed since the character still needs to be fleshed out so feel free to jump in and post when you are ready.

@Splinter funny thing is, the hack you are on right now will be used later in the game...

I think you may need to be in two places at once when we get team threads moving again.  One thread doing matrix overwatch for the team and another with come more action for you on a solo or duo run.  Deckers are tough in real life games, never really tried it on RPOL but I think we will get there.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Ok... so...

In Orkland:
Kord has messaged to say he is coming back, but a bit busy IRL for now.

Hellfire might get picked up by a new player soon.

Acme is still an orphan but I could keep the finger wigglin’ out of the bodyguard run and get that thread moving again.

In SanFran
Laurie is still an orphan. Eventually, she could be re-written as an adept or a street mage to join Bailey for what should prove to be a magic-focussed storyline.  So could Acme for that matter.  The hyper controlled perfectionist adept along with a freewheeling Coyote shaman or gutter punk street mage would be an interesting combo.  Either way, I’ll need another new player or I’ll have to take over running one of them for a bit.

In OAK RTG
Venom is getting established and Splinter is closing out the run in Neon Dream’s system. We should be able to bring these two together soon.

Thanks to all of you for making this restart a success so far! I really enjoy GMing for you!!

I think stereotypes can be really fun to play with.

In the case of Scottish Dwarves I would like to think that those living in Scotland that suddenly found themselves Dwarves would be among the first to truly embrace their new identities.

By the same notion I can easily picture the Dwarf office worker staring into a mirror in the company bathroom while he pops another handful of pills because if one more co-worker tries a really bad Scottish accent at the Company holiday party he is just going to Go. Off.

I used Action News 104 in a previous SR game on RPOL and the PCs started to post comments to the news stories in OOC... that’s what gave me the idea to have a social media thread to put some depth into the setting and for the PCs to comment.

@Splinter, @Smiley

Looks like Grimthak and AnnaLog are one in the same. In the Oakland d-zone, she cultivates the image of an orc console cowgirl with a hard edge. In the Miscreants, she has always been a balancing feminine influence in a gang filled with too much testosterone fueled recklessness.

...

So Splinter and Grimthak/AnnaLog are running matrix overwatch on Smiley's run. Let's try it like this: real world stuff happens in H2Oonorable Cause, matrix stuff happens in H2Ot Water.

Fell free to post communications between the meat world and the electron world in both threads so nothing is missed.

Despite having been picked up by new PCs, it looks like Acme and Hellfire have dropped out of the game. I'm considering re-advertising for players or dropping them completely. I especially liked Hellfire and would love to see that character back in the game.

I'm in touch with Kord's player and hope to see him back sometime soon.

I'd love to see Smiley join Kord and Grendel in this crew and kick this story back into gear...

Quick recap of where I think we are at:

Blood and Cherry Blossoms - Unless she turns on the charm, or spin kicks him in the head, Soares is about to storm out on Bailey. @Bailey: you're up.

Cross Purposes - Bailey and Laurie are scouting out Marco's before kicking in the door. @Bailey, @Laurie: my turn I think.

Mayhem and Mistletoe - Grendel and crew just showed up on Smiley's doorstep with a bleeding rocker. @Grendel, @Smiley: over to you.

H2Onorable Cause - Smiley has some time to do legwork before heading into the corp enclaves. @Smiley: need your call on legwork.

H2Ostage Situation - Grendel has the upper hand trying to repel all boarders. @Grendel: option 1 or 2?

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

So, I like my character, but I'm really not enjoying planning complicated shadowruns myself, particularly with a character who, frankly, shouldn't be doing that. It's also placing a lot on me, and I'm not particularly enjoying it. The intro scenario was fine, the run into the junk yard was fine, but I'm totally at a loss at how to infiltrate a medium security facility.

If I try and plan these runs OOC as a human being with shadowrun experience, I'd be asking you about a million questions about how any why things work, which typically lead to more questions. It's an inherent thing I'd do to try and come up with a plan that isn't totally insane since I'm looking for security holes.

This is not a great way to do things in a PBP setting, since each interaction requires a complicated response from you, and then further questions from me. And it would be worse if I was interacting with other PC's. It puts too much strain on me as a player, and FAR too much strain on you as an ST. In addition, I'm not really interacting with other PC's in a meaningful way since I'm essentially running a solo op.

I would suggest that if you run this again, you restart, and try and consider how you can run this in a way that isn't going to require so much of either your players or you. Come up with broad plans based on single die rolls to keep things moving. Try and break this down to a roll or two. In my experience, this has been the primary benefit of the PBP system.

This has always been a huge problem whenever I play or run heist style games, IMO.

The Leverage RPG and Sprawl both have some good ideas on how to keep things moving forward, IMO.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

The solo runs are purely secondary effort. The intent was to give some space for folks to play when the other missions got bogged down and build some colorful background into the Bay Area setting.

The thread is yours to play as you see fit. Play it super light, or drill into as much detail as you want. Take it in a different direction entirely.  It’s not quite Freeform, but you have lots of flexibility to play this however you like.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Hi guys. Since you have stuck around I’d love to get you focussed into a thread together (before I go looking for another player).  Here are some options:

H2Onorable Cause - I personally love the way the water plant storyline has become central to so many characters in the game. Smiley wasn’t loving the heist idea, but I think it would play OK with Venom rolling up a new PC based on Righteous (troll, street samurai), Twisted (orc, street samurai), Grimthak/AnnaLog (orc, decker), Sack (dwarf, rigger) or St. Clair (human, face).

Double Blind - we could breathe some life into Venom’s cat and mouse game between the Black Chrysanthemums and the Circle. Smiley could roll up a new PC based on ToxSix (human, decker) or Sunan (human, fixer). An Ex Cop or Street Shaman would probably fit nicely here too.

Mayhem and Mistletoe - the bodyguard gig is well developed and Smiley just joined the crew. Acme (elf, shaman) and Hellfire (orc, rigger) are both orphaned and up for grabs.

Down Ol’ Mexico Way - back when Kord was around, he was putting together a small team in a Sixth World meets Magnificent Seven story that has tons of potential. Lots of fresh character ideas: Brig (human, merc), Patch (human, street doc), Stone (dwarf, rigger), Grief (elf, mage) and m0use (human, decker).

Cross Purposes - someone else was definitely interested in getting Ms J out of Xerxes Research before Bailey and Laurie. There was at least a mage and an adept working for the other side, but pretty much anything goes if you want to roll up new characters and get into a classic ShadowRun race against another team working on the same corporate extraction.

2 Fast 2 Furious or Sons of Anarchy - the Ronin go-gang or Razor Wires MC both offer potential for a fresh start and some vehicular mayhem.

Anarchist Black Crescent - Smiley would fit nicely into the grassroots / not for profit / politically motivated version of Doc Wagon. Venom might fit too if you are open to digging in deeper into cross-training as a mercenary. A fresh character could also be rolled up as a partner.

Finally, you can always elect to stay on your solo paths or call the game quits. No hard feelings either way.

@Wuxing Crew: if you’re going with the fire alarm plan, just post up where you are when you activate the alarm.

Remember, if you want to get inside, Neko had to bluff her way past the electronic door at the building next door by calling the building manager. You can also try to jump the fence. For those who can travel astrally, you can of course try that too, you will be undetected as long as you keep clear of the wards on the condo itself.

Pacer’s got one exceptional quality thus far. The mention of soykaf is . . . well, exceptional. End of current list.

PS Her real name is indeed Viktorie Dvořák. A fact she tries to hide in the shadows but, if and/or when this comes up still feel free to call her whatever you want in narrative. Dvorak is certainly easier to type than Dvořák. (Czech has a lot of diacritics.) And Sidewinder is easier than both.

PPS And she is indeed a Doctor of Thaumaturgy. Which means she’s also better than other a lot of other Awakened. Obviously.

Sounds good; I look forward to interacting!  Pacer is single...  But he is pretty direct, a bit boring, and often brooding or overly serious.  He has minimal trouble getting a first date, but rarely gets a second.  On the plus side, he is fairly well-cultured, not unintelligent (genuinely curious), and stably employed.  On the downside, he is not romantic, too pragmatic, and out-of-touch with his emotions.

Pacer’s got one exceptional quality thus far. The mention of soykaf is . . . well, exceptional. End of current list.

You're not wrong there.  Everything about Avery Wilcox (real name) is mundane.  Aside from soykaf, his greatest asset is his reputation as dependable and discrete, which has led to a long list of contacts (former employers and co-workers)--people Avery has served dependably in the past and who would take his call in the future.  They don't owe him anything, but he's earned some cred by keeping his head down as he works--he doesn't complain (at least out loud, much) and no job is too big...or small.  He doesn't have to check his ego at the door, because he takes pride in doing all the little things right...like making a cup of hot soykaf for his client.

Awesome! Midori is single but her role as a Face makes it challenging to date others, even other Shadowrunners. She's a shameless flirt with plenty of charisma and a resilient nature, less stably but lucratively employed. Downsides include a minor addiction to Bliss and moral ambivalence.

I like the vivacious / reserved contrast. It'll be interesting to see if he finds Midori taxing to be near. At least they both enjoy caffeine. :P

I'm up for that if Avery is. Midori is gonna look absolutely insane trying to hide her status as a Face and I am here for it, lol.

Either that or there could be a friendly car-guy versus bike-girl rivalry. They can race like this: https://youtu.be/5Tjuh5JuE0o?s...1kBvlD00_F&t=220

Pound for pound, you get more performance with a bike (the "from" prices for the compared vehicles are £18,199 vs. £384,146). ;) #shotsfired

Then there’s why she instructed Pacer to call her “Miss,” under the assumption we’re speaking English. There are a fair number of PhDs who like to be called Doctor, but I’m on Sidewinder’s side. But Frau Dr Dvořák would seem to be the German standard. Pacer would be a lot easier based on what I know about him so far: Herr Wilcox.

So I just wanted to add this disclaimer and a random piece of doctoral trivia. This is also all less relevant than it seems. I am using Dvořák in narrative right now, but that will change to Sidewinder once she enters the shadows

Yeah, that sounds awesome, and potentially funny as hell!  I also get that Mr./Mrs. Smith vibe Neko mentioned!

On the bike v car side, Avery is also pretty risk-averse--so if he's going fast, it means something is going wrong... (which, of course, it often is...)

I think the pompoms should do the trick!

Though, fun fact: snakes don’t dislocate their jaws. Their mouths are simply constructed differently. Their mandibles aren’t fused together in the first place like ours, and only loosely connected to the skull with lotsa ligaments holding everything together, letting them stretch their mouths larger than their body. Teeth help living prey from escaping. Large enough prey can start to be digested faster than eaten, which is actually a bad thing as I understand it.

But pit vipers have a cheat code: proteolytic enzymes injected along with their venom start breaking up prey from the inside. A lot like a lesser version of how spiders’ digestive enzymes work.

I don't know that proteolytic enzymes would help with an astral creature even if you did have a pit viper, but it would make a fun astral smoothie out of the creature if it did. :P

Yeah, amylases in our saliva came to mind, but they’re bush league compared to pit vipers and they are nothing compared to spiders.

Pet peeve, the entire thing about Cleopatra committing suicide via asp could only have been written by someone who never saw one in the first place. Shakespeare, for example. It surely refers to an Egyptian cobra, which is a massive snake whose bite is excruciating.

But ancient texts getting biology wrong isn’t exactly unique. There are plenty of basic facts wrong in the Bible, but I will never forgive the ancient Jews. Kashrut has errors, but GRASSHOPPERS DO NOT HAVE 4 LEGS. FLYING INSECTS DO NOT HAVE 4 LEGS. CRICKETS DO NOT HAVE 4 LEGS. THEY HAVE 6. SIX. VAV. WAW. HEX. VI. 110. I RAN OUT OF NUMERALS. BUT NOT 4!!!

I’m a bit touchy when it comes to entomology. It’s subtle, so I should point it out.

I agree entirely and to be fair, am just a fan of venomous snakes. Not enough to have one, because like, while they're silky and smooth I don't want to die and I would cry every time I had to feed it.

Yeah, there’s a reason constrictors are the most popular serpentine pets.

Though, unrelated, pit vipers aren’t the only snakes which can see into the infrared. Boas and pythons also evolved thermographic vision in a parallel and lesser degree.

The opposite happened at some point(s) in evolution where it diversified in both mechanism and delivery system, or lost altogether. Then there is a ridiculous amount of convergent evolution. Turn out venom is an awfully useful trait, even when metabolically expensive. Dry bites are common for a reason.

It's fascinating when you think about which selection pressures might have caused the evolution in such a fashion. I mean naturally, predation is usually the first concern, but with snakes I imagine that's less of a problem than say, a rabbit or a mouse.

I don't think I'd be able to handle a snake as a pet at all. I'd have to feed them little mousies and even seeing the frozen ones would hurt my heart lol. I am a total wimp when it comes to animals getting hurt.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

I’m the exact opposite. Seeing predation in action is utterly fascinating. I even let a pet praying mantid take a few chomps off of a finger once (tiny ones till she went back in her terrarium.)

Spoiler for Maybe gross?: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
I caught her in the wild and she turned out to be carrying some passengers. Died when the parasitoids were done munching on her insides and munched their way out. Couldn’t ID the larvae for the life of me. Not even to the order! Real bummer. And there was is no point in preserving an eviscerated mantid as an amateur, nor preserving animals that I couldn't ID in ethanol. I think they were beetles, but that was only a marginally educated guess. Wasps are more my deal.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

That's absolutely fascinating! From a scientific standpoint I totally get it, but I am a softie. I cried the first time I had to cook moules marinière in culinary school; I couldn't even eat it. My instructor said it was delicious though lol.

I dunno, I do like dead things and skulls and the like. I have had friends in the past send me vertebrae and rib bones they've picked up on their travels and they decorate my bookshelves, I think a preserved parasitised praying mantis would have been pretty neat.

The fact it looked like BEETLES is so fascinating! I see a lot of articles on horsehair worms but there is no way in hell anyone would mistake a worm for a beetle. I wonder what kind of bugs eat a praying mantis? That's pretty metal of them.

Re: OOC Idle Chatter

Mr. Johnson:
I’ve seen an osprey do the same thing. Smashing a mouse into a branch, I’m guessing to tenderize it and break up the little guys bones.

That’s fascinating! The only thing I can think of is a brood parasite’s eggs not making the cut, and the osprey got pissed and destroyed the eyrie.

I am far from an ornithologist, and the only useful sources I found that could be relevant are:

https://www.lookandlearn.com/b...ospreys-under-guard/
(Definitely Pandion haliaetus haliaetus)

https://www.theanimalfiles.com..._of_prey/osprey.html
(P haliaetus)

This is a NON-ORNITHOLOGIST’S speculation who DID NOT OBSERVE THE BEHAVIOR as to why an osprey might smash into a tree.

But sometimes animals just do weird things you’d never expect.

The dice roller was kind to Pacer and Sidewinder for Christmas. You are about to make it away free and clear despite having been outnumbered two to one and on the wrong side of a sneak attack.

Happy New Year too!

Oh, dear. If everyone addresses this new Gregorian year then the Matrix’s bandwidth will get even more overloaded.

But a snake mage thinks of a quote from the final short story in The Jungle Book from a character who is extraordinarily different in Disney’s utterly fantastic 1967 movie:
Kaa:
It is hard to cast the skin.

It ain’t easy to advance in the shadows. ’Specially if you change when you do.

PS If you haven’t seen that animated film then remedy this ASAP, chummer.

I have to admit, I stole that from Appaloosa, a really funny satire Western movie, where Viggo Mortensen's character has a legendary shotgun that everyone in the movie knows is an "eight-gauge".  It's a really funny movie.

Pacer and Sidewinder's conversation should end with them agreeing to meet Sidewinder's Mr J somewhere in the Bay Plex. Otherwise, you guys just keep doing what you are doing!

In reply to Pacer (msg # 147):

It’s a shame Sidewinder keeps Natrixs in reserve, because She’s as good or better at everything than any other spirit she can summon except for Watchers. All at the same time. So you’ll (hopefully) have to settle for the inferior Mentor of a Mentor! And/or its respectable Search.

As far as gear, Sidewinder has a concealed Ares Predator (probably silenced); an encryptable microtransceiver disguised as a brooch; and, the only thing revealed to Pacer so far, simple mini optical binoculars. And her Vashon Island suit and Lined Coat are both Fine. ’Cause she ’runs in style.

And, other than soykaf, light. So having a rigger along is awesome.

Oh, and if Pacer offers to tote Sidewinder’s soykaf and/or brings his own to share he will get +5 in an undefined point system à la Whose Line Is It Anyway? The higher the quality the more bonus points he will earn in an undefined scaling system. She’s a serious addict.

One side effect of drinking too much soykaf—Pacer has a small tick, a foot that taps rhythmically when he's sitting down having a cup or two.

You three are a pleasure to GM for

And a pleasure to play!

I was terrified you were gone for good. The game gets more interesting by the post, and opens up more possibilities with each one.

And I can’t believe you made Sidewinder spew out her beverage. I didn’t that’d be possible. Tip of the hat, Mr Johnson. Tip of the hat.

Pacer is probably the one who made it possible. So I wager both o’ you get the credit.

Now she just needs a new mug . . .

“Hoy! Waiter! This is, like, partly saliva. If you heard what I heard, you’d get it. If you weren’t just a mundane servant. Just fix this and scurry away. Oh, wait ’nother soykafetière. Then scurry away.”

PS I used to work at a restaurant. Not the most dickish type of customer, but she’d be on the list.
