Re: After the Battle

In reply to Virgilio Hohlfeld (msg # 653):

There is a mage of sorts who you remember being at the Mageguild years before, a half ogre named Malga'Mar,who while blatantly gifted, did not acquire membership and headed north to Northport. That spellcaster had a gift for letters.

Re: After the Battle

"I wonder if Malga'Mar is still here?  He was really something with languages.  He left the Guild -- well, never joined and left his apprenticeship, don't know what happened there --  just about the time I apprenticed, and they said he came to Northport.  People remember him because there aren't that many half-ogres, never mind half-ogre mages."

He was very distinctive, with odd triangular pupils and runes tattooed on his knuckles... and he has an unmistakable aura of power about him.

"All that aside, there's every likelihood he can translate Latin, if we can find him.  I haven't seen him since he left the Mage Guild.  Perhaps someone at Nortport's Thieves', er, Adventurers' Guild has an idea where we might find him.

"Otherwise, it might be a matter of finding a Triunist priest."

Re: After the Battle

"He was quite talented, as I recall, and since there's no Mages' Guild hall here and he wasn't a member anyway, we might look for a wizard to see if they've heard anything."

He starts looking around at the shingles hanging over businesses more permanent than market stalls, trying to get a feel for the layout of Northport.  Cathedral spire over there, a hill with obvious temples that way, wagons loaded with produce coming in the same gate we did, humans, goblins, a few orcs, and occasional elf in a random-seeming mix.

He reaches out to put his hand in front of someone who isn't walking too fast, to get their attention.  "Pardon me, can you tell a traveler where I might find a wizard in these parts?"

Re: After the Battle

Dilandua gives a laugh, the second such that they had heard from the emotionless warrior to date, and it takes a moment for their voice to completely flatten again.  "No, come on, start at the Guild.  Likelihood is he's have either joined the Guild or the Dismal Tower.  And the Guild is on the way.  Besides, Reanna has pull, in the Guild, lean on that.  The Guild's sage or spell-teacher will probably know about any new wizards, particularly odd ones, in the city.  Besides, I recommend joining the Guild, they'll protect you, maybe, if the Mage's come hunting.  And it's the only way to get jobs and prove lodging without serious hard work here."

Re: After the Battle

"Well, I'm as much against serious hard work as anyone, so it looks like I'll need to join up there.  They aren't going to try to make me into a walking vial of paut, are they?

"Oh, and 'prove lodging'?  That sounds like some serious vagrancy laws -- perhaps a newcomer should try to find a short guide to local things to watch out for?"

Re: After the Battle

"Yes, vagrancy is illegal, the nobility take a very dim view of squatters, as such the Guilds have their pick of hopefuls with the trade ships bringing in new people everyday.  However the Adventurer's Guild has almost no entrance requirements, other than you are willing to take jobs, and have no compunction about sharing floor space with dozens of others.  This is why I merely work for the Guild, I live elsewhere.  I would not worry of slavery, it is frowned upon in Northport, I believe not technically illegal, but only as indentureship  I could be wrong, but I've never seen a slave in the Guildhouse."

OOC:  19:24, Today: Dilandua rolled 13 using 3d6.  Area Knowledge Guild 6, from default.

Re: After the Battle

In reply to Dilandua (msg # 672):

"I can speak for the guild. They profit little from slavery, but by providing you with a career, they build their own base of power as well as your career. Therefore they have a vested interest in finding you work. Especially work that undercuts other guilds seeking power in the region."

[Private to GM: No Area Knowledge, IQ 13, Guild Rank 2, rolled badly again, 14.]

Re: After the Battle

"That sounds like a better deal than was forced on me at the Mages' Guild, then.  As well as potentially keeping me out of a cell if I don't have another home -- though for the time being, it seems I can afford rent if I choose, thanks to your generosity in sharing the spoils.  I'm not a big fan of sleeping on a floor, however, never mind in a crowd, so I may well take a room somewhere if I can find one vacant.

"I take it the rest of the group is planning to stay in Northport for at least a short time?  I'd like to tag along with you, if I may, since I know no one here and keeping on the move seems advisable at least for the time being..."

Re: After the Battle

In reply to Narrator (msg # 675):

Lol, yeah, but debts and buying contracts of people who owe is how we have 'replaced' slavery in the modern world! Banks and credit companies do that on a regular basis today, but we don't officially have slavery...but I need to stop talking on that now before someone gets offended.

Reanna will take Virgilio to the guild to join him up, if he so chooses.
