Princess the Hopeful Game

I was approached to GM a Princess the Hopeful game and thought it prudent to start a thread not only for communication but also ideas from the community and maybe even an extra player or two if the original players are willing.

So okay first things first, which version of Princess the Hopeful do you fellows intend to use? It's a fangame with multiple versions available.

Princess the Hopeful Game

Hi, one of the current players here (of Zelda, Champion/Grace of Swords).

We've been using the Vocation version and I'd greatly prefer sticking with it.

Princess the Hopeful Game

The player who helped recruit our illustrious GM here. I play Shira Rosenberg, the melee Champion of Swords.

I'm mostly familiar with Vocation, so I would like that one.

I would like a game that's a bit action heavy, though obviously there will be downtime for the more personal take on things.

I'll be a little honest, I would like a game with a decent amount of progression. I don't expect DBZ levels of powerlevelling, but if we're playing at a good pace, I don't want things to be 6 months down the line and we've barely earned our first experience point.

I would like to be able to use lore from Road of Dawn, and eventually the mechanics, because the character I envision doesn't really fit with the traditional Courts, while the Court of Wands is very much her style.

Well I don't have a particular preference for any of the versions so Vocation version it is. and the Road to Dawn book is fine too.

So a more action packed Chronicle? Well not all challenges are physical in nature but sure I can do that.

So some quick questions:

Do you prefer a darker tone like Puella Magi Magica Madoka or a lighter tone like Mahou Shoujo Nanoha StrikerS?

Would you like to keep the Mature rating? Should I upgrade it to Adult to downgrade it to General?

Would you prefer something episodic or something with a strongly tied myth arc?

I vote for mature over adult.

Dark themes are okay, but I don't want a game that is crushingly depressive. We're here to make the world better, and that world can be made better.

I'd say myth arc, though starting episodic before we realize there's a greater force at work seems like the standard.

Personally I think an even mix of physical, mental, and social challenges/situations would be much better overall. Shira is kind of the odd one out in being almost exclusively a combat character so far*; Zelda and Shirley are both split close to evenly between combat and social and Nina leans primarily toward stealth and investigation.

* Key words "so far;" I have it as a major in-character goal to at least get her to open up and be more sociable if not invest more dots in such.

Somewhere in between. The way I see it ideally is things should tend toward the darker side all else equal, but not so much so that we can't turn it lighter ourselves with enough determination, elbow grease, and good old Friendship Power.

If it helps, the primary inspiration for P:TH is a web novel called Sailor Nothing (which I'm currently in the middle of reading myself), the main theme of which is that "magical girl" is not an easy job, especially if you're unfortunate enough to have to go it alone.

I don't have a preference between Mature and Adult but General is right out.

No preference.

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

I read Sailor Nothing way back when, during its initial run on the website and the FFML. I do like the idea of a personal story being told in the backdrop of a cosmic horror tale. Also the ultimate origin of the yamiko did make me raise an eyebrow.

Can I ask what is the stat that would be involved in teaching/training?

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

If memory serves me right, nWoD does not have a particular skill for teaching unlike say Scion or cWoD. I would say that to teach effectively you need at least 1 dot higher than the student as well as a roll of skill + attribute. For most skills the attribute would be charisma to express yourself well and to keep your student's attention.

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

How are we on crossovers? I have one character in my character's backstory that I originally conceived of as a Fae-aligned baddie, but that's something that can easily be replaced by a standard Darkened.

Also, are we doing extra XPs for interesting backstories/NPCs?

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

I think we will do crossovers if only so that the characters will be kept on their toes. However they naturally won't be the focus of the game although other supernaturals can become recurring NPCs or allies.

Hmm, what system did you have with your previous ST? If we already gave you awards, then you might as well stick with them. Since this is a new game, I think it is not wrong to take the chance to tweak your characters a little. Maybe some XP for expansion?

I am toying with an idea; each player gets 2 Entanglement Points per chapter that lets them make a story request of the ST. "Make this character my love interest", "an old friend moves back into town", "my damned amnesiac black cat remembers something actually useful for once", etc. What do you think?

You'll actually be ST #4, we've not been having good luck with this. IIRC the first ST gave us Inner Light 2 by default and +1 XP for writing a backstory and a certain number of associated NPCs, followed by nada from either of the next two.

Interesting. On one hand per story might be better than per chapter to keep things from getting out of hand (though I personally don't even know what all I'd do with 2/chapter), on the other hand given how long PbPs usually take...

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

I like having bonus EXP for providing extra characters/plot hooks, though I don't think our game on RPOL had them.

Also, where do we want to have the game set in?

Do we have the optional rule where as minors we can trade normal Skill Dots for Transformed skill dots?

The Entanglement thing sounds pretty cool.

Everybody please remember that, per the rules of this forum, characters can not be discussed in this thread.

Thank you.

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

Roger moderator Sir.

Okay game details then. We'll handle character stuff when the rest have chimed in and I create a game thread.

I think fictional small town America would be a good setting for the game. Perhaps as a homage, we could call the town Sunnyvale?

Overall the tone of the game is pretty much "the world is in shambles but with work and hope, we can change the world". Other supernaturals do exist but in relatively small numbers. Other kinds of supernaturals can also exist, the Dreamlands breaking open also bring some of those creatures extinct since the Kingdoms fell back to Earth in tiny numbers.

Suggestions on a game name? Perhaps "Walk with the Light"?

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

Roger Mr Moderator.

I imagine a larger city, but if we have a town that's close to a major city, that would be nice.

We might consider moving to a game thread (can you rename the game after its creation?) so we can discuss things more openly without arousing the Wrath of Mod.

Re: Princess the Hopeful Game

Yes, I believe I can rename the game after its start. I'll just used a placeholder name, we can always change it later.
