IC: Star Trek Voyager

I'm wondering if anyone is interested in a reimagining of sorts of Voyager.  Players can create their own characters so there's no need for someone to play poor ensign Kim (unless you wanted to of course) and while some similar situations may pop up, it would be largely its own thing and not an attempt at a beat for beat retelling because what would be the point.

I haven't given any thought to the system yet, just FYI.

I'd be interested, if you're up for the Star Trek Adventures RPG. It's so far the Trekkiest game I've played, and gives the right vibes.

I'm a second for Star Trek Adventures. In the game I run on another site, we switched over as soon as the core rules were released. Love that system, because it really does capture the cinematic feel of the genre. (And I happen to be friends with one of the writers. :) )

Regarding the setting, is the basic premise of the series still in place, i.e., a combined Starfleet and Maquis crew are stranded in the Delta Quadrant 70-odd years from home?

Are all on-screen characters going to be on the ship for this game, with the PCs taking on other roles, or will we be allowed to replace them whole cloth?

Will we have an NPC Captain Janeway, or is the CO position also fair game?

(If all positions and characters are fair game, may I instead suggest that you & the players actually create a new ship, but keeping the basic premise of a crew lost decades from home? It doesn't have to be in the Delta Quadrant, either - you could put us near the Great Barrier at the farthest point of the Beta Quadrant, for example. Even the 24th Century isn't exactly necessary...imagine a Daedalus stuck in the far-flung reaches of the galaxy in 2175 or so.

The whole Lost In Space premise really can do basically anything when Star Trek is involved. My preference is for the 24th Century because I like it there.

Consider me interested, though system may be my problem. Like Star Trek Adventures RPG mention earlier, I have not had the chance to look at that one let alone play it.

If folks need, I can do a little share of my copy. The core mechanic isn't too complicated, but they pack in a bunch of customization and wrinkles.

I was in a game with a similar premise but we were players or crew of our own ships who had to band together to get home.

Sadly never got past the "meet & greet" stage and our GM disappeared soon after...

I'm interested; if the username doesn't give it away I'm a bit of a trekkie though I've only ever played freeform Star Trek games.

How do you plan on handling the rank system? If one player's character is a higher rank then another's what's to stop them just ordering everyone around?

In reply to OBorg (msg # 8):

The fact that it's a Trek game deals with that. Starfleet only behaves that way when it's dramatically appropriate. For the most part, important characters like the PCs are treated equally except in extreme circumstances where there is somehow a conflict between them, which is rare (at least under Roddenberry).

I think it's not really a matter of ignoring each others' ranks, so much as a matter of respecting each others' areas of expertise.  Riker isn't going to overrule LaForge about the engines or Crusher about medical stuff, because Riker isn't dumb and he knows that they know what the eff they're talking about.  :)

Is there a chance to run this game for players with the Start Trek Adventures Quickstart only?
The file is here https://preview.drivethrurpg.c...dventures-quickstart and it is free.
This would allow some player (like me) to try the ruleset before committing to buying the full ruleset.

Wow, I didn't expect this amount of responses.  I will read through this, make some decisions and get back to you all tomorrow.

In reply to OBorg (msg # 8):

Star Trek Adventures typically has people from different specialties/professions, so rank doesn't matter much in that regard, everyone is generally the same "power level" so it won't be the chief engineer and an engineering ensign deciding the course of action, it'd be the chief engineer and chief science officer deciding who has the more relevant expertise to handle the solution - also hi, fellow trek username :)

That being said, all up to what the GM has planned for the character types available. But then again, a player captain or first officer trying to decide how to solve every problem themselves is quickly going to find themselves facing some OOC pressure.

I too am intrigued.

For those unfamiliar with the STA system, there is an online character generator that is pretty well done.

Okay, so, after giving it some thought I've decided to go with another ship rather than Voyager itself.  I haven't decided on the class yet but I'm happy to take suggestions.  The game will begin near the end of 2375 just after the end of the Dominion War.  Your ship, the Odyssey, will be swept away and you'll have to get home.  Somehow.  We'll use Star Trek Adventures but I admit my experience with it is quite limited.

I quickly setup the game here link to another game but clearly I need to do some more work.  In the meantime you can send me a message there and I'll get you added to the game.

In reply to Yaztromo (msg # 11):
I'm guessing you're asking if you can use a pre-made character.  If so, that's fine with me.
