IC: Star Wars 5e Sandbox in the Old Republic

Checking for interest in a Star Wars game well before any of the films take place in a sandbox-style game to allow for the most flexibility and character possibilities. I planned on using the fan-adapted Star Wars 5e as I like the looser system of D&D 5e over the older d20 versions of Star Wars. Additionally, being in the Old Republic means very few restrictions on Force users and no pesky canon things to get in the way of PC stories.

Because of the scope of sandbox and my own RL schedule I would plan on it being a rather slow-paced game, so there would be plenty of time to contemplate, plan, chat, and think of meaningful posts.

Since the material is new and fan-made there may be some house rule adjustments for clarity/fixing as they are needed.

Thoughts, opinions, input? Kudos? Rage?

You certainly have my attention. Did you have anything more specific in mind in terms of plot ideas, tone, and the like?

I suppose things like that might be helpful, yeah? Sorry, late here when I decided to post the thought, so a little on the incomplete side.

Game would be rated Mature to allow for heavier content, but by no means am I going for a dark, edgy game. The core of Star Wars was always pretty mixed with a lean to lighthearted and fun.

I have an idea for an overarching plot that everything could start tying into, but my running style places a heavy emphasis on player character stories and their lives/goals.

No emphasis on any particular set of mechanics that would be focused on to the exclusion of others. If there are pilots, there would be battles and missions involving ships. Do I have a pacifist diplomat? Heavy role-play/social challenges with the occasional threat that pushes those bounds. In other words, missions would be a mix of specific and general.

At this point I don't have a restriction on the number of Force-users because of the timeframe and no reservations (currently) about Dark Side characters. If I have opposing groups who might start PvP there will be some considerations there that both sides have to agree OOC a about the manner in which their confrontation should end. As GM I am definitely not interested in killing off characters unless the players of those characters are okay with it.

Kind of a ramble, but about to crash for the night. Feel free to ask any and all questions. They sustain me~

I am up for it. Its been a long time since I had a good Star Wars RP and 5E mechanics sound interesting. Gotta be better than d20 Star Wars right?

Would this be within the time frame of the KOTOR games, or before or after them?

I know you’re looking to avoid canon from later things, but legends canon is huge, and the time periods give a lot of useful character plot hook options.

I used to like the more detail oriented 3.x version of Star Wars, but over time it just bogs things down and can spoil enjoyment. With the new rules in 5e I am hoping that it will be much much smoother and allow for more "yes, you can do/try that".

As far as when in the Old Republic, I am looking at various timeframes for consideration. Legends canon is huge, yes, so avoiding it entirely is just asking for trouble. I am by no means a SW expert, but I can always research any gaps. Game actions may alter timeline, anyway.

Also contemplating a house rule for failed rolls that you really don't want to fail at - life and death situations, etc. - and adopt the idea out of Mouse Guard: You succeed, BUT there are consequences based on the degree you missed by.

Sorry for the thoughts being all over the place, but brainstorming while answering questions can also potentially increase interest.

I am thinking the timeline will fall into 3600 BBY. Enough time for a period of calm with any events from the previous decades still close enough for influence, but far enough out to establish our own story. My concern with established canon/legends is running contradictory to it when I do not know all of the details in such a storied series, but am enthusiastic enough about it to want to run a game in it.

I am going to start some write-ups for the game so I can have a structure in place before opening up applications. Please continue to ask any questions here for the time being.

I'm not familiar with a 5E version of Star Wars (though apparently there are a few versions out there with a quick google search). Which version are you planning on using?

This sounds interesting.

Yes, this is the rule set I am going to use.

So far nothing is blocked, restricted, or banned, given the sandbox nature of the game. Just keep in mind it is still a group activity and all should be good. =D

The central hub is a space station in the Tion Cluster that acts as a depot for nearby mining operations as well as the central port for a few of the nearby (relatively speaking) worlds. Specific location is left relatively ambiguous because the station is capable of moving around.

Would this draw anything from the SWTOR game? I love their take on the setting.

Re: IC: Star Wars 5e Sandbox in the Old Republic

In reply to RossN (msg # 17):

Currently I do not have anything planned that makes use of the information provided in the MMO. I can always access information that came from it (thank you Wookiepedia and similar), but the current plan does not involve anything from it, afaik, since I did not have the time to play the MMO.

There will be an underlying campaign of events as the trunk of the plot tree, but player stories are the branches, leaves, and flowers/fruit. =D So the addition of new material as I learn it will certainly not be outside of consideration.

Re: IC: Star Wars 5e Sandbox in the Old Republic

In addition - If anyone is looking at pre-building characters with the information presented, I offer two methods for generating ability scores:

1) Standard roll 4d6 drop the lowest 1 (this will take place after the game is set and a dice roller with log available)

2) Modified Standard Array: 17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8 (Thank you Dungeon Dudes for the array)

Usual limitations of your starting ability scores cannot be higher than 18 after species modifiers.

EDIT: As another note, the Simplified Forcecasting variant rule on page 308 of the PHB will be used for any (all) of you making Force users.

At the rate I am able to get things in order and write-ups done (locations, basic timeline, NPCs, crawl, etc.) I am looking at making the game by Saturday at the earliest. Otherwise it will be some time next week.

Re: IC: Star Wars 5e Sandbox in the Old Republic

Thank you for everyone's patience.

I have the foundation of the game set up and am in the process of filling in details. You can now view setting information, house rules, and the RTJ. Submissions will be reviewed over the next few days so details can be worked out and the game will begin in full afterwards.
