5e clerics - dumb question

Okay, I’ve not played a cleric in 5e so I wanted to check something to see if I have understood correctly.

A cleric KNOWs all spells of their level.

Each day they must PREPARE a list of spells that they can use that day. If it isn’t PREPARED then they can’t use it that day.

DOMAIN spells are always PREPARED.

Can CAST spells from PREPARED list up to spell slot limit, plus unlimited Cantrips from known list.

Is that right?

Almost. They don’t know all the spells. They have access to all the spells. They pray to prepare the spells they want for the day. This might seem like a pointless distinction to make, but some classes know a limited number of spells and can freely cast them as long as they have slots. So it’s important to not use the same wording as it might cause confusion.

Otherwise, spot on.

Also, those PREPARED spells with the Ritual tag can be cast without using a spell slot, just extra time.

In reply to liblarva (msg # 2):

And this is how clerics have been since 1st ed. Or maybe it was second ed either way it has been this way for a long time.

In reply to Knight_Vassal (msg # 5):

Um, no, not really. before they could only cast a spell the number of times it was prepared (and it was forgotten when cast), and no rituals (other than 4th ed, which worked differently than all the others).

Prep slots and Cast slots were the same slots. Now they are different. Now you can simply memorize one of each, and cast whatever suits your fancy, potentially more than once, and/or at a higher level than the memorized slot it fills.
