Sub-Saharan Dungeonworld!

Hi all! I've recently got back into PbtA games again, and would love to run a game set somewhere a little different to the usual pseudo-medieval fantasy Europe. I'm considering running a high fantasy Africa game, if that's something people would want to try!

I'm looking for a reasonably light-hearted tone. Think closer to The Hobbit than Game of Thrones.

Does this sound interesting to anyone?

Sinbad/Arabian Nights kinda fantasy?  Count me the $*@# in!  I wanna explore ancient tombs of the Elven Kings, fight off crocodiles while crossing the river, travel the sands with a dwarven caravan on camel-back, try comically to hide from the guards in the halfling quarter's bazaar and steal the evil genie's lamp by infiltrating a sultan's harem!

I could be interested in this. Could you tell us more about your story concept? In your mind, what is a "High Fantasy Africa" game?

In reply to Bod Man (msg # 3):

I'm imagining a pulp fantasy feel, with lost cities, evil viziers, and untamed wilderness! I would, at the very least imagine a nation based (loosely) on Arabia and the Moorish empire, a nation based (loosely) on ancient Egypt, and a nation based (loosely) on medieval central Africa, but Dungeon World works best when a lot of the world-building is done communally.

Does that answer your question?

Sounds like an interesting story. Unfortunately I have zero experience with PbtA.

It helps. I'd definitely sign up for this if you do get it going.

PbtA couldn't be much simpler, to be honest. It's a beautifully elegant system that can largely be understood just from the character sheet.

That,  and the game also works really well Play-by-Post because there is no "initiative" rule, and every player action prompts its own reaction from the world.  I've run games where I let players string multiple successful moves into a single post, and it leads to some pretty epic scenes.  The Bonds system and "failure is the best teacher" reward role-players over roll-players for interacting with their party members as much as possible and attempting sub-optimal actions, instead of just waiting for the person with the highest stat to solve the problem, so you never feel like you made the "wrong" choice for your character.

How soon are you starting?   I'm super excited for this idea...

This is the second game idea I've seen this week that makes me wish I had more time.

If and when you start this, I would like to be notified.

You might find Hypertellurians a helpful resource (or alternate system): https://mottokrosh.com/machinations/hypertellurians/

That does look really interesting! I'm going to shelve this idea for now as I'm suddenly playing in an IRL Dungeonworld game, but it's really nice to see there is interest here!

Have fun with it!  Just know that we're excited for the idea, if things fall through IRL.
