Classic Traveller

This topic originates in a thread in Wanted - GMs to which I responded.

link to a message in another game

In that thread the originator and one other expressed interest in a game set in the Original Traveller Universe (OTU).  The thread was starting to verge on too long for its intended purpose, so I've decided to move further discussion here so we can refine the concept.

My idea so far is to use the three Little Black Books (GDW) as basic rules, aided and abetted by the character creation rules in Traveller Plus unless there is strenuous objection.

Traveller Plus is free and may be found at:  http://crucible.cc/traveller/tplus.htm

It has a point-buy system for character creation which allows for a more varied and customized character.

Since I'm talking about possibly starting a game:  I could manage a twice weekly posting rate with a smaller group (eight or less).

What say you?

Classic Traveller

I am quite interested.  When and where would you set the game?

I would likely set it late in the reign of Emperor Strephon, say, the mid to late 1080s, just in time for the Fourth Frontier War to be over?  (I'd have to dig to be more specific - don't want to be too close to

his, um, assassination
).

Since this is an introductory game for some interested parties, I thought I'd start with the Spinward Marches, maybe in Regina or one of the more Coreward sectors and branch out from there.  You know, someplace not too dangerous but not too boring either.

Re: Classic Traveller

Sounds great. I’ll do some reading on Traveller Plus. Twice weekly posting rate sounds ideal to me.

Re: Classic Traveller

Looking for one more?

I'm pretty gamed-up, but I'm sure I can manage twice-weekly.

And the GM has a good rep...

Re: Classic Traveller

All of that sounds good to me. Honestly I would be super excited just to get to play. I have run a fair amount of mongoose traveller but have never been on the other  side of the table.

Re: Classic Traveller

I would enjoy a chance to play Traveller again, but I like the random character creation.

Re: Classic Traveller

I can play CT or Mongoose 1 or 2, I know nothing about Traveller plus though.

Okay... it's not settled yet.  Here's how we could do it:  Traveller Plus is my own personal preference, but it's our game we're talking about.  If you want to use the Book 1 rules, sure, go ahead.  Those who look at Traveller Plus and like it are free to use it.

I usually start folks off with 100 Character Points, but to maintain compatibility with the Book 1, we'll limit that to 75 points (that's what Ed Messina, who wrote Traveller Plus, recommends.  That way, this can be something of a test, and everyone can have their choice.

How's it sounding so far?  It's sounding like a game!  Let me think of a catchy name...

Okay...  How's A March Spinward sound?

I have the bare bones up for now, and will work to get more done this weekend.

Re: Classic Traveller

Just to bring closure:  I have six players at this time, and have turned off the accepting players flag for the game.
