Star Trek Adventures, Kelvin's Next Generation

So I have a Star Trek setting in mind, but my players in the last version of it sort of lost steam and now I'm looking to reboot it in hopes of seeing it really go somewhere. The idea is that it's set in the Kelvin Timeline rather than the Prime Timeline, but in the Next Generation era. This Federation is allied with the Romulan Star Empire, and both are at war with the Klingon Empire. Vulcans are an endangered species, the Khitomer Accords involved creating a Vulcan colony rather than Klingon, and the Khitomer Massacre was a Klingon attack rather than Romulan. Basically swap the two major antagonistic factions and have events play out from there.

There's a little more open warfare than Next Gen would usually involve, with major themes including trust between two allied factions whose ideals are diametrically opposed.

Keeping in mind that I am definitely not as skilled with Star Trek Adventures as I'd like to be, is this the sort of thing people would want to get in on? Should I reset my game space and bring in a new crew, or shelve this idea for later?

Is there a reason to keep the federation diametrically opposed to the Romulan Star Empire?

There are plenty of elements in the Federation that could have pushed in a more like minded direction given the access to allies that kind of allegiance would grant.  Not perhaps a full conversion to the Romulan style but easily more like the war footing we see in the Enterprise D in the episode that changed the Khitomer Massacre by pulling the Enterprise C through a hole in time.

Mix in a little bit more influence from the Orion Syndicate and a lot less guiding hand from the Vulcans and you get a much more interesting and compatible Federation.

I feel like that would toss out a huge chunk of the core conflict: the Federation we know allied with the Romulan Star Empire, and seeing how the two have to compromise to work together despite their differences. My intent is to keep the Federation as a primarily scientific exploration and utopian society in the face of outright Klingon aggression.

No reason you need to change all of the Federation, perhaps just Starfleet?  Use Starfleet as the medium of conflict both between the Utopian Federation and nefarious Romulans and between the Scientific side of the Federation and the Aggressive Klingons.  You could even add a third conflict source if you want an internal political debate between Starfleet's conflict driven nature and the quiet largely happy Federation civilian population.

Hm. That could work, but I'd need to find a way to actually show it. With the player characters all being Starfleet out dealing with problems across space, having an internal conflict with the Federation itself would be difficult to put front and center, unless they were assigned to a particular planet or Federation starbase. And I'd have to rethink... well, everything. If Starfleet is the thing that's different, and Starfleet is what the players get to see the most of and have to work within, everyone would have to re-learn what that means from the ground up, which isn't my intent. It'd still be just as much work and I don't feel there would be much payoff.

Sounds like some great ideas and an interesting game. Unfortunately I have never had the chance to play Star Trek Adventures and don't have access to any of the books. Would you be inclined to take on players who have no experience with the game?

Indeed I would! I'm happy to help new players figure out the game, as it's a bit intimidating at first. Hopefully I'll also get an STA expert to help me, as my skill is kind of middling and it's been half a year since I really took a dive into the book.

I'll also have links to some resources available so everyone can be on the same page.

Aaaalright. I'm gonna see how many of the old players are interested in sticking around, and then I'll let you know. I think this thread's gotten all it can, and I'll take Hendell's ideas and see what I can do with 'em.

EDIT: Opting for rMail rather than forum advertisement.
