DnD 5e Horror & Survival on a Sentient Sea

Welcome to the endless ocean. You're sure it has a name, that you've spoken it, and that everyone calls it the same thing. However, somehow you aren't sure what that name is, and whenever you try to recall it to speak it you naturally (or perhaps unnaturally) avoid saying it. Strangely it's hard to even talk about it directly as anything but the ocean or the water. It's also always with you, covering the world as far as the eye can see. More than that though, it's a companion and comrade. It speaks to you, as a loved one would. It thinks, it feels. That, and whatever your relationship with it might be... sometimes it scares you. It keeps you up... where it is safe. Though if you go too far down, it might not be there for you or worse. It might want to keep you there forever.

You're sure you've seen land before, started there even. You're as sure of this as you are uncertain of where it is, how long you've been away, or much of even what it was like. Nowadays you sail, searching for something. Living off the ocean and the empty ships you come across that might have fallen to pirates, madness, the things that live in the water, or accident when searching ruins. Yes, there's ruins too. Derelict vessels of vast size, some as big as the ramshackle ship cities you come across from time to time. Some dead cities, some something else. Made of technology beyond anything else in the world.

Right now you are at the end of your rope. Whether your ship was racked by storm, your crewmates lost to the depths, or simply a string of bad luck on your small raft, you are now 'on your own' and you won't survive much longer on what's left of your boat. Hope however, is on the horizon. Ruins. At first you thought it was a floating city, but no. It looks like a dead city; but it's better than nothing. If you're lucky, whatever killed it isn't there anymore.
