Long time ago, there was a delicate balance between "noble" races - humans, elves, dwarves and small-kin and the "monsters" - orc-kin, giants, undead and shapechangers. The civilized races buil town, traded and prospered, while the creatures of the night sought to take for themselves the wealth they amassed.

300 years ago, four champions arose among the monsters. They unified not only their kind but worked together with the other three to subdue the civilized folk. Some say the four were dragons, others say they were emissaries of gods or their incarnations, while many believe that they were heroes that came into possession of powerful artifacts.

200 years ago, the champions proclaimed victory and had disappeared. Unsure what to do without a goal or a foe, the monsters returned to their bickering. But there was no one to produce wealth and grow food anymore, at least not in the numbers that existed before. So they slowly learned to adapt to the new order.

Now, there is an uneasy peace between the groups. There is no outright war, but many marauding companies, often gathering members of different factions, seek to return to the ways of stealing and pillaging. Guards and warriors join them as often as they try to stop them.
