Be able to browse a forum without subscribing

Right now, anytime you visit a forum, and read articles/posts, you get subscribed and start following it.  It would be great if that option was under manual control instead.  For example, if I visit the Beginner's forum, and forget to go back to my preferences and remove it from notifications, I start getting messages (since it is a very popular forum, and I have hourly notifications, this is rather annoying).

Actually the only way I see now to change my follow settings for any given forum is by visiting the preferences page, would itnot make sense to have it in the right hand side menu (I'm using the r.rpol.net interface)

Go to the Home page, change your Preferences from there, that should apply globally.

On the Main Menu you will see a small box to the right of each game/forum name, just before the GM name, with a [-] sign in it.  Clicking that will remove the game/forum from your page without having to go into Preferences.

Re: Be able to browse a forum without subscribing

I think the issue there is that you might need to dip back into the forum from time to time, but not with the need to maintain presence there.  After every time you dip back in, you're "resubscribed"

This would be an excellent behaviour for software when you've contributed -- made a post, or a reply.  But for a simple read, I think it's obtrusive.

Oh, right.  He mentioned Notifications so I thought he was talking about email notifications...

In reply to patchwolf (msg # 4):

And you'd probably be surprised how many requests the Mods get from people who went into a forum, such as Wanted - GMs, posted, then removed it from their list... and would like to know how to find it again.

The system kind of assumes that most people will want to look at a forum again at some point.  If they don't want to, they can remove it.

Re: Be able to browse a forum without subscribing

Not really.  I work in software engineering; not much about users surprises me anymore.  Manually removing threads doesn't bother me much at all.  And the "Mark all as read" link works quite well.  :)

But I was just adding what I thought was some clarification on the original post on this thread, not the original poster.

@Patchwolf's clarification is correct.  If I just browse/read a forum occasionally, it is not necessarily an indication I want to be notified of new posts in that forum.  To me the 'opt in by default' to updates is not expected behavior. If I have posted a message, then I can see that being the correct default, but not when I am just browsing.

Wow -- I never noticed that little box -- thanks!
