Updating Time Zone

Does anyone know how to update the time zone? I would think it was in User Preferences, but I do not see it there.

In reply to Jaydee (msg # 1):

I thought it just used your computer's settings. Mine seems to be, anyhow.

Yes, RPoL automatically takes the time zone from your computer settings.  As long as that's correct, your RPoL time zone will be too.

How often should that pull from the computer, BBR?

Responsive doesn't seem to have fully updated for daylight savings time, even though I know my computer settings did automatically update and are correct.

Or at least I've noticed that since the start of DST (for the US), the cast list times of all my games are an hour behind (most apparent when the 'Today' doesn't trip over to 'Yesterday' until 1am on my desktop). Seems to only be the cast list times that are affected, though. Posting times are all spot on correct.

Might be a browser/OS thing - time zones have always self-corrected on my ancient laptop running Firefox, but the iPad I inherited that can only cope with Safari never updated RPoL  to BST, despite logging out and in again. I suspect it will probably fix itself when its cache refreshes, but you could try dumping out all RPoL-related cookies from whatever device manually, perhaps?

I had a weird issue when daylight-savings time hit.  The time displayed when looking at Cast was an hour different than the time displayed in the threads themselves.  I forget which was off, but one adjusted to DST and the other did not.  Looking at the Cast list it said their last post was at 09:37 but looking at the threads it said 10:37 (or the other way around).

I'm having the same issue as IkeEsq and SunRuanEr. The time is fine everywhere except when looking at The Cast. Everything in that is one hour behind--never updated to Daylight Savings Time.

It's fine for me, but then we don't do Daylight Saving where I live ...

For those who are getting the discrepancy, is the problem only on responsive or on the old site as well ?

It's possible that the code that fudges times for GM characters might be affecting PCs as well (I believe it's handled slightly differently on responsive, due to the changes to the cast list, but I could be wrong about that).

In reply to Skald (msg # 8): old site as well (but only on iPad).

edit, since I didn't think to try it: switching to the responsive site gets the right time on the iPad, but coming back to the old-timely one the clock is wrong again, in case that's pertinent information.

Ah, my follow-up question was to get you to check your system Date & Time settings and let me know what you've got for:

1) Set Time automatically (on/off toggle)
2) Set Time Zone automatically (on/off toggle)

And, if you're using manual settings, 3) Adjust for daylight saving time automatically

... but I'm looking at those options in Windows 10, though the iPad must have equivalents.

Platform is another question then ... does it work on PC running Windows (and what version of the OS) but not on iPad (and again, what version of the OS) ? IE who's having problems with what system type/OS ?

To answer a few of your questions, Skald:

I get the issue of cast list (and Game Menu, see below) time discrepancy ONLY on Responsive. The old site looks spot-on for cast list/game menu times.

I get the issue of time discrepancy ONLY on my desktop (Win10, Chrome) but not on my Android phone (also Chrome).

The settings for my system/s are set to Set Time Automatically and Set Time Zone Automatically (and the clocks on both phone and desktop are correct for my time zone/DST.)

Post times IN threads ARE correct.*

It's NOT only the Last Login time and the Last Post time in the cast list that are an hour off, but ALSO the visible Last Post in threads showing on the Game Menu (just realized this while testing things).*

* - These last two are true from both the Player view AND the GM view perspective, so I'm not sure how much this has to do with login times being fudged for GM-controlled characters, since GMs don't actually see the fudged logins, only Players do, and Players don't see actual timestamps for logins on the cast list at all. (Edit: While Players can't see times on the Cast List, I can tell that Last Login from the player perspective is still off because I can't trip my Last Login to 'Today' at midnight, I have to wait until 1am.)

--I get the issue on The Cast on the old site, which is what I use. This is the only place on the old site where the time is off. Checking the new site, everything is off by one hour--game menu, dice roller, The Cast, everything.

--Everything else SunRuanEr said above apply to me--settings, and what follows after the asterisk.

In reply to Skald (msg # 10):

It probably does, but I can't find them anywhere obvious (apparently I can set my calendar to Chinese, Hebrew or Islamic, though). I don't actually care about fixing it on there, as I said, I just thought the information might be helpful in pinpointing the problem for those who're bothered by similar issues.

My usual machine - crunchy old thing running the old site on Windows 7 via Firefox - is absoloutely fine.

Thanks all - nothing absolutely definitive but certainly some consistency there, and hopefully it's of some use to jase. I'll move this thread to the RPOL Development forum and put a link to it in the New Site Design thread which I know jase monitors.

Problem might be with the way the cast list does its date calculations to hide GM controlled characters OR it may be something system/browser based, but jase'll work it out and let us know when he has a moment.   :>
