Jake Ward:
I'm happy for Ward to come along, but it's probably best for him to be asked instead of told to come along IC - perhaps along the lines of employment as opposed being shanghaied.  There's a different standard of care that comes with one vs. the other.  ;)

OK, I'll try and cover that off with both Ward and Nassir when the rifle squad is finalised.

In reply to Ferro (msg # 3):

When Kessler assigned people to the Humvee I was going on the basis that I didn't know how fit Rodriguez was (and no one had given me any feedback beforehand so I had to wing it).

If you all want to swap Rodriguez for Babicevs - i.e. Rodriguez rides in the Humvee as gunner and Babicevs rides in the BTR - that's fine with me, it means that Rae's characters are split up so less chance of him potentially talking to himself.

Just need someone to suggest it IC and you can all assume Kessler will ok it.

I just realized I mistook who was going where (Varis and Jose). That's my fault.

I definitely don't mind who goes in the vehicle, Ferro is just securing a gunner. So don't matter to me.

It's been a few days with no posts so I've assumed all prep for your characters is done and I moved things on.

I know it would have been better to jump forward to actually inside the sub & tent, but I've run out of time tonight, so I'll leave it here. I'll have the next turn up real soon though.

witch_hunter007, I didn't mention it, but consider Reza fed and his pack dropped off somewhere safe.

Looking back at the engagement at The Twins (ch. 17), it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of info available on the submarine. Some descriptors and what the unit would know is that:
  • "It's a fucking big submarine."
  • That it has numerous welds from prior damage and is rusting in places above the waterline.
  • At the Twins there were two large structures attached to the side of the sub. These could either be 10k fuel tanks, or floatation devices/ballasts to keep the sub afloat.
  • Lastly, and I thought this was interesting, was that a previous prisoner mentioned a home port of Conarky. He possibly could have meant Conakry, the capital of Guinea, in west Africa.

We know its nuclear powered, right? That narrows it down, a bit. Assuming it is nuclear-powered, its either a SSBN, SSGN, or SSN.

Soviet SSBNs (the kind that carry nuclear ballistic missiles) are super distinctive. The two major classes used during the late Cold War period are the Deltas and the Typhoons. The Deltas have a very distinct hump behind the conning tower. The Typhoons, on the other hand, have no hump, but are the widest sub class in the world.

An SSN is an attack submarine- they're multipurpose boats designed to hunt and kill other subs, and surface vessels. Many have limited land attack capabilities as well.

Size-wise, Soviet SSGNs (the kind that carry surface/land attack cruise missiles) are typically fall somewhere between an SSBN and an SSN. The Oscar class is pretty huge- long, and broad in the beam. The Charlie class doesn't look much different than its SSN contemporaries.

If whatever type of sub Nowak skippers was indeed based in Conakry at some point, that would make it more likely that it is an SSN.

I hope that wasn't too pedantic. I didn't want to just drop acronyms and assume everyone here knows what they mean.

It's an old November class attack sub. I envisioned those older & noisier boats being used to interdict shipping in more remote areas where they might stand a better chance than say, the sea-lanes between North America and Europe. This one operated in the South Atlantic mostly, far from NATO home waters. IRL the Soviets based a few aircraft in Conarky during the Cold War. In the game history it was a friendly port where the sub basically sheltered after the nuclear exchange for a long time, until finally deciding, with much disagreement, on heading home - only to see the sailors try to head back to Africa (or maybe Cuba, somewhere warm) before mechanical trouble resulted in them only get so far as The Twins.

I borrowed bits from Last Sub obviously, turning it from an American to a Soviet sub.

OK, so we've got

Humvee
Ferro - driver
Kessler - front passenger
Voight - guns
Babicevs / Nowak - rear passengers God help Nowak

BTR
Everyone else. 2 people in air guard hatches, everyone else riding on top like tank desant (my limited research would suggest this is an unofficial SOP - honestly, you'll thank me if the BTR gets hit by an RPG).

@Witchhunter, I've got no problem with Nassir taking over as BTR driver after this op but I think it would be stretching things for Kessler to swap out Andropov for someone whose abilities are as yet unproven / undemonstrated midway through a fairly crucial op.

Hope that makes sense.

I would prefer that each of the BTR's air-guard hatches be manned and any surplus militia personnel ride on board the two militia vehicles.

AFAIK, the right front and left air-guard hatches are manned by Per and Jose respectively.

I think all of the Mad Dogs except Jake and Reza have claimed a spot.

Jake would prefer to treat Mad Dogs at the locations shown below, for the following reasons:

1) these areas have good cover thanks to the concrete
2) the incline allows me to position the patients in the Trendelenburg position very easily

If all casualties could make their way to these areas, I'd be very grateful.

Fuse, can you clarify/confirm this piece a bit more?

Fusilier:
Three figures are visible on both sides of it, and are in various postures (prone, standing, and in between). Halina Nowak's clothing and lack of rigging, make her easier to identify than the others. She's hunched down directly in front of the Humvee's front bumper and facing the vehicle.

That makes it sound as though there are 3 humans on either side of the Humvee, plus a 7th human (Halina) at the bumper and facing the vehicle, which is oriented away from us? Or does it mean 3 combined on either side and then Halina at the front? Total count of people next to the Humvee and orientation of the vehicle would be most helpful.

Reposting this:

Abel (AK-74) - Bearded and obviously older than his comrades. He seems to be ex-military by the look of his clothing and kit, and how its worn. His brown trousers, which almost look army issue, are neatly tucked into combat boots. Beneath unaltered Polish issue webbing (containing a hand radio) is a greenish-brown Gortex jacket, and he wears a camouflage baseball cap.

"Hatchet Guy" (AKS-74U) - Has a sheathed hatchet attached to his rigging and a thigh-holster for a sidearm. The rigging has some cosmetic changes with designs. Wears running shoes and a dull-yellow rain poncho over black trousers. Knee-pads are also worn. A spare magazine for his carbine is taped to the one that's already loaded. Hatchet Guy also stares at Kessler a lot.

"Patrick Swayze" (AK-74) - Physically looks like, and is dressed like, the actor in Red Dawn; wearing a grey hoodie, with a (IFF color) headband, underneath the outer shell of an overcoat. Has ALICE webbing including binoculars pouch and two utility pouches which both seem bulky and full.

"Evil Marta" (AK-74 + M72) - Eerily resembles Marta Nalecz, but rougher and what one might call a mean (or crazy) look in her eye. She wears a dark blue nylon winter coat with a fur hood, and acid wash jeans. She also has a US Army PASGT helmet painted black.

"Shades" (G3A3 + Riot Gas-Gun) - Small framed fellow, has a pair of sunglasses resting on the top of his head/slicked back hair. Wears a brown bomber jacket with camouflage trousers. Probably thinks he's pretty cool. Maybe he is. In lieu of webbing, he has a utility belt and a fabric bandolier containing both spare rifle magazines and gas cannisters for the riot gun that's slung over his back.

"The Mechanic" (RPD LMG) - Balding but still young, wearing a greasy boilersuit with some sort of automotive repair business logo embroidered on it. He's also the only fighter wearing some sort of pack. There's a sheathed spare barrel for the LMG attached to the side of the it.

But the post mentions that there are 3 targets beyond them to the east. Would you mind adding a bit of clarity regarding where they are/where Mad Marta is pointing?

I gave this to Kessler as dialogue that came through the enemy radio. Only he heard it but I figure it doesn't hurt to make it public for interest sake.

Enemy radio chatter...

-In Polish:

Speaker 1) "Brozek, I am not firing another flare. I can see Victor, he's dead. I think you should call in the support fire."
Pause...
Speaker 1) "Brozek, do you hear me?"
Pause...
Speaker 1) "Volos? Anyone? Volos? The fuck?"
Pause...
Speaker 2) "Vaclik... I'm hit. I am... moving... can you meet me at the rally point?"
Speaker 1) "Brozek, fuck, call in the fucking support!"
Speaker 2) "I don't know, I don't know where Volos is. How many... how many men you... do you have with you?"
Speaker 1) "Only Stefan. Those assholes in security are nowhere. I think they left. We cooked that BTR though."
Speaker 2) "I'm at the rally. Where are you, Vaclik?
Pause...
Speaker 2) "Vaclik?"

Do you mean the left side of the road (from where you are, on the right side)? You can walk/run across, but there is no cover. You'd just be going across the road. However, regarding the MG fire, it isn't/can't fire into the space under the bridge so cover isn't an issue from that particular threat. Make sense?

Or did I misunderstand the question?

My understanding was that we were going to move due west in a straight line until we were at the left side of the bridge at which point Ferro was was going towards toss 2 x frags around the blind corner. I’d presumed that was about as far as we could go in one turn.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

My thought was this.

We use the L/H side of the bridge as a solid piece of cover against where we know are one, possibly two threats firing at us and can't get to us.

Ferro would take up I-4 (corner) and harass the position with grenades (smoke/Frag) with Kessler covering the way we just came and dropped the last attacker (Q/R-1/2).

Have Varis fire another grenade where he has, have him check his fire, and Voight can try to assault from the lower portion of the bridge (J-1) over the top.

What Ferro is doing is immediately going left to J5. That's first and no delay and regardless of anything else. Get to better cover.

After that it depends on what Kessler and Voight want to do: either what Voight suggested or Ferro.

If they decide to do what Voight mentioned Ferro would rather not, so she'll drop back and take Kessler's spot in the rear but still helping them out by covering their right flank... so facing R1 (from the J5 spot).

If the decide what Ferro said, move that last few steps to the corner and start chucking grenades around the side. Ferro can do that or someone else can... it doesn't matter to me. I have 2 frags and if anyone else has any to contribute.

Ferro's throw skill is not good. But I'm not sure that matters when we're just throwing blind. That's why I suggested a few grenades to cover more area. Voight probably has better throw RANGE though so that might make him a better choice. Unless his arm is injured?

I also just want to point out for Rae's sake that I'm not disparaging Varis's ability to provide fire support.

Not a lot to add - the only other options seem to be, 1) wait for the rain of bullets to stop in the hopes that the enemy is reloading, or 2) pull one or two back to the south and have them go over the top of the berm. Both of those options seem to add an element of extreme risk compared to just hucking some grenades around the corner and hoping for the best.

I might be wrong, but I think I need to make sure everyone under the bridge is on the same page with a clarification.

There are 2 places:
-At the base of the embankment, which is where the MG was
-At a building about 50m away, which is where the krok reported seeing someone enter

As it is now, Kessler and Ferro are going to move along the embankment to the MG, and Voight is going to the building.

Thanks for the everyone confirming.

This is the layout. I didn't provide it before because Kessler's group didn't really have eyes on the building from where they are, but they will the instant that they step out from under the bridge. Likewise, the Krok couldn't see what was on the side of the building that it ended up on (no windows or doors) but Reza would realize immediately upon driving around.

So... I feel that giving this out in the previous turn wouldn't make sense, but I also think it shouldn't wait until after the current turn, so I'm giving it now and if people want to adjust their actions that's fine.

Rae and Dave, I wrote that Jose will look to Kessler in case he wants the plan to change, but given that reaching Ferro would mean crossing open ground, I'm thinking Varis and Jose should probably just proceed with the assault and leave the casevac to others. Well, based on the last couple of posts. my intent now was something along these lines

1. Tell Rodriguez and Babicevs to go back up Ferro.
2. Tell the Poles with Kessler to put down suppressive fire on the sheds to cover that movement
3. Tell Nassir to move the BTR closer to the building that Ferro, Voight et al are in to pick up the wounded (I don't think getting the medic to the casualty is viable).

Dependent on how all that went, to be honest, my next move was going to be get everyone into one or other of the vehicles and get the hell out of Dodge and back to either the Rowing Club where we have multiple Doctors on hand (although I don't know of the top of my head how much medical supplies we have for them to work with at this point. I seem to recall Nowak was arranging more us to get some but I don't know what the time scale for that was).

That will involve abandoning the Humvee (and Kessler ordering its destruction if possible to prevent the enemy getting it so later salvage isn't an option). But I don't really see an alternative to that. Even if we win this battle in the next few turns people may start dying before it can be recovered. That also means hoping that there are no mines etc on the road.

So the way I see it, we've done what we can, it's time to get out of here before any PC's die.

But, I don't really feel like I can make this decision unilaterally, so I'd like at least some input from others as to what you want to do.

Basically, stay or go?

Seems like if we stay, there's probably PC death, salvage (their small arms, our vehicle), and we maybe snuff out Monolith as as an antagonist once and for all...

And if we go, almost no salvage, and maybe we don't lose any PCs (no guarantees).  And there's some chance Monolith reconstitutes...  and maybe brings PCs to death's door again at some point in the future.

Is that about right?

There is a middle ground which is to evacuate the seriously wounded while others stay to finish off Monolith (best evidence would suggest that there's only two of them left...).

Re: OOC Thread - 23

This is a tricky situation. I think y'all have covered the pros and cons of both continuing the fight, and retreating pretty well. Here's my thinking:

This conundrum reminds of the scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Ilsa reaches for the Holy Grail. Indy urges her to leave it and save her own life. In the end, her obsession kills her, and the Grail is lost anyways.

We're really close to eliminating Monolith. That said, even if we don't get Brozek, Monolith is more or less combat ineffective. We've killed a bunch of them, captured a couple of radios and a few weapons. More importantly, we've foiled Monolith's plan of killing or capturing Nowak. On the other hand...

VIP Nowak's seriously, if not critically, wounded. If she dies, Monolith wins, regardless of Brozek's fate. What happens to Gdansk then? Also, the Mad Dogs are pretty much combat ineffective themselves. Four of them are WIA. Per, at least, can't really fight in his current condition. It sounds like Voight's injuries might be quite serious, and I'm impressed that Kessler's still standing.

I think we should grab what we can and retreat. Nowak's safety is our primary mission.

I do see the value in wiping Monolith out once and for all, though, so if that's the consensus, I won't stand in the way. My preference is a withdrawal to either our base (preferred but a riskier trip) or Nowak's.

All good points. I'd also call out that the Mad Dogs, for the most part, are also reaching combat ineffectiveness. Nearly everyone on the team has been shot, blown up, or injured in some fashion in the last week. Some critically. No matter what happens, we're going to be in dire need of some long rest/regrouping no matter what once the current battle for the city reaches completion.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

We still might be able to do both, but it'll stretch our manpower. Here's a proposal similar to @Kessler's middle ground suggestion:

@Reza takes the BTR to the door of the building that @Ferro, @Voight, et al are in. They load Voight aboard and pull back.

In the meantime, the militia light up Brozek's suspected position, while Jose and Varis climb the embankment. Does @Jose have NVGs? If not, Per can move forward with his SIMRAD and spot for them. From the elevated position, they try to spot Brozek. If they do, they rain down fire on him. If they get him, awesome, if not, whatev's. We don't risk a direct assault, though.

As soon as the BTR is back, we all consolidate and head out, either to the rowing club or Nowak's base, whichever is closer (I need to take another look at the map). In the meantime, we grab everything of value that we can, but not if it puts us in significant danger. I hope we can get the Czech MG and the manpack radio, at the very least.

I really don't think we should split up, given our weakened condition, and propensity for getting ambushed by every Tomaz, Dikuz, and Haryz in Gdanks.

Jose does have NVGs, yeah. I think there's risks either way, really.

Say Varis and Jose do try to get eyes on and light up Brozek and/or the mortar. They could be at risk from direct fire from the mortar? Alternatively even if we try to pull back, there's a risk that the mortar could open fire indirectly on the casevac.

Yeah, the mortar is a wild card. I'm hoping that they are red on ammo. IIRC, they dropped 10 rounds tonight, plus how many on the rowing club? But that's a gamble on our part.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

Judging from the map it's only about 500 metres (give or take) from our location to the Siennecka Bridge, and the Rowing Club is just the other side of the bridge. So I think we're closer to home than the Zorya (I didn't actually realise quite how close we were, which is my fault for not looking at the main map - reinforcements from the Rowing Club would have probably been on site by now).

Also if we go back to the submarine we're still going to have to get back to the rowing club at some point. And I think we have better Doctors at the rowing club. Albeit they mahe have to work with hacksaws and bottles of vodka if we have no supplies...

I'm fine with what Rae proposed if him and Heffe are. i mean, realistically, it's going to take at least a turn to organise getting the BTR into place to evacuate the wounded person from the building (Voight I presume). So may as well do something. That doesn't help with Ferro's request for reinforcement but we've never had enough people to go around for God knows how long so no real change there.

Ultimately up to Rae and Heffe though, they're the ones whose characters will be sticking their necks out. If either doesn't want to do it we can revert to suppressing Brozek while the casevac takes place and then try and clear the area (by my count three people including me favour getting out of dodge and no one has explicitly spoken in favour of staying in place and pressing the attack. From my perspective Kessler is always going to prioritise people over materiel / loot - we will eventually get another vehicle from somewhere but we can't trade for another Voight. And if we do lose Nowak the whole exercise is going to have been in vain from an IC perspective. And God knows where that will leave Gdansk. And as Heffe has pointed out, we're not really in any state to do much at the moment. If the Russians decide to take advantage of the chaos to try and storm the City the best thing we can do is try and seize the Zorya and make for Rostock.

Either way, I'm going to bed, so if you all (Rae and Heffe especially) want to decide what you want to do Kessler can post accordingly tomorrow.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

I don't usually do this but if anyone is interested this is how I managed the ambush...

I put the amount of time the enemy had to prepare to a roll - from a couple hours, to less than one hour, to holy shit they're already driving into the kill zone. The roll would determine the amount of prep the enemy got. In this case it was the middle outcome, so they got to put down a couple mines, preregister mortar targets (3), do minor improvements to fire positions (those mounds Kolstrup saw), and set up some cutsoff behind you, etc...

I drew up the plan before Kessler made his to keep from "cheating". Originally, acting as Brozek, I assumed Nowak would be in a vehicle positioned in the middle (or thereabouts) with a security vehicle out front. That's not how Kessler decided to do it but Brozek wouldn't know that, so there was no change.

The location was picked because the embankments broke line of sight and could be used to isolate your side's forces. Brozek's plan was to hit the lead vehicle and bring the convoy behind it to a stop. He figured 2 things would happen after: #1 the Mad Dogs would send a small team to assist the lead vehicle, which would be then shot up, thus making the odds more even so a attack could be mounted. #2 Nowak would be sent back to the Zorya. A cutoff team was in place to target whichever vehicle turned around (thus inadvertently announcing which one she is in).

He then sent 2 guys to finish off the Humvee and hopefully draw the relief troops (in event #1 above). He wasn't impatient, but felt the need to rush because the longer the ambush took, the less chance his guys could escape if an external relief force was inbound. Meanwhile, Vaclik, Brozek's Czech deputy, was to start clearing your embankment, to keep the separated Mad Dogs further isolated (visually). The RPD gunner was taken out first, Kolstrup hit next, and (I think) Jose was next but Vaclik was soon needed elsewhere.

Things started falling apart with the second attack on the Humvee and a flanking against the main unit. By this point it was still assumed that Nowak was back there in the main unit, since no vehicle departed, and he didn't have a full picture of the Humvee situation, hence the flanking against the main unit. It was also around this time that some of Brozek's forces started quietly taking off. Not all of the ambushers were Monolith. Over the course of the fighting in the city, they picked up stragglers and such from other militias. I put their commitment to the ambush to a roll each turn or so (Monolith excluded).

The mortar was nowhere near you. This why Brozek needed someone else to call for support, despite having a radio. He, Vaclik, and the radio Kessler got were all short ranged, while his other guy (his name was mentioned in the radio exchanges) had a manpack (actually taken from dead original radioman). They had 3 preregistered targets, along the length of the road (bridge, bridge, and a spot on their planned escape route to mess up pursuit). The support fire was shifted from the second bridge to the building Ferro et al were assaulting, basically calling it on himself, which is why Vaclik said good luck when he heard the altered request go out.

By this point it was basically over for the enemy.

Anyway, just thought I explain things behind the curtain.

Good stuff.

Long ago, when the base started to take mortar rounds (back in May), I looked up the IFR range for 82mm mortars, then used a radius mapper to create an area where the mortar might be located.  After 2 seconds, I realized that it could be almost anywhere in Gdansk.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

I should have looked at a map before I posted last week.

According to google maps it's about a three mile drive from the rowing club to the post office. And you can't avoid crossing a bridge.

However... if you go by boat you should be able to go up the Marta Wisla (by up I mean in a northwest direction. I never know what's up river and what's down river) then take a left on to the Motlawa. Go along the Motlawa until you reach the eatern tip of Olowianka island and take a right up the smaller unnamed creek / canal. That goes within approx 100 metres of the post office and would avoid any risk of road ambush, especially at a bridge.

So, having assembled an impressive fighting force, I'm now thinking that it may be better not to use it, or at least not for the reason it was originally requested.

I'm thinking maskirovka.

1. We need to get a boat
2. Send the vehicles out making it look like they're on a very important mission to deliver Nowak to the GPO
3. While attention is (hopefully) on the vehicles, Nowak, the Mad Dogs, one of the Doctors and Nowak's loyalists (Bartosz, Beata, etc) sneak on a boat and sneak up river (or down river, whichever it is) and make for the nearest landfall to the GPO.
4. Presuming that Nowak has people at the GPO already they meet us and escort us to the GPO. At this point the Mad Dog escort can return to base on the boat or stay with Nowak (Kessler will feel obliged to go with Nowak for 'political' reasons but we can deal with that if everyone else wants to return to base)
5. The vehicles drive around for a bit - avoiding the obvious route to the GPO and any bridges 'cos Kessler doesn't want to sacrifice anyone needlessly as part of this little maskirovka - before returning to, well, wherever they want to really.

Questions

1. Does this sound feasible to everyone? (Including Fuse - is there anything there that absolutely wont work?)

2. If so @Fuse, to try and not mess up the narrative as it stands, can we have the horsetrading for a boat and the working out of this plan have happened behind the scenes and make this briefing part of the maskirovka, i.e for Opsec reasons only those who need to know will not know that Nowak is in the convoy (am thinking that we find a 'volunteer' to wear Nowak's clothes and get in a closed vehicle with their hood up so it will look like Nowak is in said vehicle). Meanwhile we put Nowak in some sort of uniform to make her look like she's just an ordinary fighter to minimise sniper risk on the dash from the canal to the GPO (maybe her and Beata can swap clothes. If not we must have the gear to make Nowak look like an ordinary infantryperson)

I don't think there is any of that will be impossible. One thing though, the canal section is not deep, it's the one Kessler took a river taxi on. So the boat will either have to be small, or you walk further. Preference?

Also, in case you are wondering why Nowak doesn't just cruise up the river in the sub is because it needs to be surveyed for depth (silt) and submerged hazards.

Mild preference for bigger boat / longer walk unless there's strenuous objections from the medical team about the potential harm to Nowak of longer walk (it looks like the closest drop off point if using a big boat would be near the Hilton Hotel that doesn't exist in this timeline but I was almost staying in later this month, which I had thought would be really a funny photo op but I'm not going to Poland any more)

However I digress - from the Hilton that doesn't exist to the GPO is I believe approx 300 metres so I think benefits of bigger boat outweigh saving approx 200 metres walk)

And yeah, I figured the sub would need deeper water. Although I'm not going to lie, when Monolith started dropping mortar rounds it did occur to me to ask if the sub had any cruise missiles left. Just in case we ended up having to pull out and nuke the site from orbit while submerged. It's the only way to be sure...

I think Kessler's deception plan is good, assuming that we maintain super tight OPSEC prior to departure. The decoy team should not be told of its true role.

Re this, I realise that I made a typo of sorts in my original post which changes the context somewhat

I said

quote:
i.e for Opsec reasons only those who need to know will not know that Nowak is in the convoy

The not was in the wrong place and makes it sound like a bit of a riddle. What I meant to say was

i.e for Opsec reasons only those who need to know will know that Nowak is not in the convoy

In other words, yes, the intent all along was that the decoy team (or at least the majority of them) are not to be told.

FWIW Kessler plans to tell the following

Any Mad Dogs accompanying Nowak
Bartosz and Beata who will be authorised to brief any Nowak loyalists accompanying Nowak at the last minute
Woermann
The senior Osprey rep
Tymoshenko who will be authorised to share the info with her people (while requesting one of them accompany Nowak)

That's it.

Ferro:

Yeah, it does contradict what Kessler has previously suggested but to be honest I hadn't looked at the map at that point and once I realised that we basically have to cross a bridge (unless I'm mistaken and if we can avoid a bridge I presume it means a longer road journey so either way we're exposed for longer) I thought that was something of an unavoidable choke point. Then looking at the map this plan started to make more sense. I think the key symbolism is around the Post office itself - getting there is a means to an end. It would have been to make a grand entrance but given our current state I do think it's the better option.

In my defence, if this works out then Kessler can claim that it was a cunning plan of Baldrick-esque proportions all along...

Yeah, that's the intention.

So we can brief everyone on the fake plan (as though itw as the real plan. If you know what I mean).

So I'm going to make a post with Kessler telling everyone their jobs on the convoy and all that sort of stuff. So that everyone that's not on the 'top secret' list referenced above (add Fischer to that BTW) thinks that it's a real briefing. That was the plan. I didn't do it today because I wanted to wait to get some feedback from others before I committed everyone to my plan.

The implication - at least as far as I see it - is that the super secret briefing for those on the list has already taken place behind closed doors.

Now...admittedly...if you'd prefer I don't spend a post briefing multiple NPC's on the fake plan I'm fine with that. I was just trying not to mess up too much what's already been posted.

Slight tweak in the IC post

I had originally intended for the ground column to just meander around a bit and avoid any possible ambush sites but looking at the map there doesn't seem to be any alternative way to make for the GPO without crossing those bridges.

@Fuse, am happy to play this that Woermann goes on a different route once they've left the compound - if anyone queries it he can always say that he's concerned about the bridges being mined / rigged for demo etc. That adds yet another element of uncertainty about the whole plan to try and confuse any ambushers.

Also, the compound is now in lockdown so no one in or out.

However....that being said, I also forgot that his arm is in a sling. So maybe something smaller might be better. My first thought was the Skorpion but there's hardly any ammo for it - did we recover any suitable SMG's from any of the recent battles that aren't in stores yet?

Michael Kessler:
One modification has been made from how the vessel was when it arrived, with Kessler ordering the PKM that had been moved to the BTR bunker shifted to the boat and mated with the empty tripod, together with 350 rounds of ammunition, so that if they did come under attack they’d have some means to return fire besides their personal weapons.

Fuse, if there’s no time for this or it’s not possible for some logistical reason feel free to strike it. I only have this chance to post today and I didn’t want to spend time going backwards and forwards checking with you first.

Also, can we presume that Kessler spoke to the LoSA off screen at some point and put it to a Persuasion roll to try and get them to stay?

Fuse is the other boat within hailing distance? And / or do we have a PA system onboard? (I’m sure in every shark film I’ve ever seen they have a PA system so they can yell at everyone to get out of the water).

Maybe we should have brought a bigger boat…

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm going to cut the turn shorter than I planned. It's basically cutting right in the middle of a conversation. I don't want to say why, but I want the players to be able to get an action in before the dialogue goes too far.

The time until the next turn won't be as long as it has been lately though, I'm thinking Saturday. So please try to have something in by then. If you can't though, no problem.

I'll also have something for Rae's guys.

Also, I know lately there have been long gaps in between turns. I hope that isn't causing people to lose interest. I've had a change to my work schedule (plus a long weekend out of town) so getting proper game time has been difficult. It'll sort itself out though.

Added some more.

I'll finish up tomorrow with a post that will bring the chapter to a close (Mad Dogs present for Nowak's address and formally taking power). The subsequent chapter will be fast forwarded enough that everyone will have healed. This would be a good time to lay out how you'll spend that downtime, besides rest and recovery. I realize that people are going to be away for the holiday and such, so I'm not rushing things on my end. I've been swamped and away myself.

I also think the next chapter might be the final one. I have something planned for the story, a sort of climatic battle, but after that I'm not sure where else to take the game. Or if it should. That isn't a firm decision, I'm open to thoughts from you, but I figured that I should mention it. Thoughts?

Re: OOC Thread - 23

Fuse, I’ve been on this train for just under nine years. I know others have been with it longer, some since the beginning. It’s been a helluva ride, I have enjoyed - and continue to enjoy - every minute of it. The effort that you as a GM put into it as very clear to see and you’ve done a helluva job keeping things running for over fifteen years. So for all that you have done for this game, a heartfelt thanks.

Do I want to stop playing? Absolutely not. But maybe it’s better to go out on a high rather than stutter along without some sort of clear direction and see things eventually peter out and stall with no closure of sorts? I mean, we’re tight with the new Government. That seems like a logical point to press the pause button if that’s what you want to do.

Or if you want to carry on maybe we can go in a different direction. If Gdansk is secure (or at least as secure as it can be) maybe it’s time for the PC’s to try and get back to NATO territory, leave the City (and all the behind the scenes stuff that goes with that) and head west? Start afresh, to to speak, maybe after a longer fast forward, to the spring? Just a thought…

(In the interests of full disclosure, Fuse already knows that for various reasons I’m having my own challenges when it comes to setting aside time for Rpol so I think only fair to say that if things do continue I’ll still be up for it as a player but it may be time to retire Kessler - playing the IC leader requires a certain level of time commitment that I can’t give at the moment).

Whatever your decision is, I’m sure we’ll all support it.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

I'll echo a lot of what Udxr226 said. Fuse, you've done a helluva job creating a living, breathing Gdansk. Although I may whinge a bit from time-to-time, I have really enjoyed this ride. I'm invested.

My only real issue with the game is that I struggle sometimes- actually, most of the time- to keep all of the NPCs and interconnected sub-plots straight. This is on me, though. I really do appreciate the complexity of the campaign, even though it's occasionally lost on me. I'm not sure that I can do more to fix my issue, though. If something isn't up-to-date in the various topical OOC threads, I rarely have time to do a deep-dive into the Wiki. I'll ask for clarification in the OOC, but I fear that this makes it seem like I don't care enough to follow the threads. That is not the case at all but, regardless, I worry that asking questions annoys those who aren't as forgetful as I am. Anyway, like I said, this is more my own issue than anything- in the interest of full disclosure, I just wanted to put it out there.

My thoughts, Fuse, are that if you are feeling uninspired, or are just not enjoying yourself, then it's either time to wrap things up and put a bow on 'em, or to take an extended break until your creative tank is full again.

I'll support whatever decision you make.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

For me, this is a game that lives rent free in my head between posts, specifically because it has such an amazing backstory and depth to it - and I say that having never fully read every prior post.  There's so much going on that I feel bad that I can only give it scant attention most of the time; which was certainly much more the case back when I was overseas working at least.

I certainly understand if retiring the game is at hand.  It's amazing to even see a game with this many posts and this long of a life/history on RPOL, much less participate in one.  If there's something else beyond this (i.e. this continue in some fashion or another RPOL endeavor replaces it), I'm in if you'll have me.

Ultimately, whatever happens, I'm happy to help and support however I can.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

For downtime, presuming this is the right place for it, Jake will focus on the following items:

1) Checking in on the wounded.  He's not a nurse though - he'll educate people on how to change their dressings, debride wounds, etc. but he's not giving any of you a sponge bath.  Since almost everyone is injured to some extent, I figure there's be enough small talk/chit chat with all for Jake to know basically all the Mad Dog's common background elements (i.e. what players typically list in the description area or as part of their PC post in the Cast thread).

2) Improving his (and Gosia's) living situation as options open up.

3) Volunteering for a few shifts with the Marians to help out with procedures, patient care, etc.  There's a genuine altruistic goal (Jake originally intended to become a doctor before the war defered that), along with the very practical intention of developing and sustaining personal contacts, maintaining and growing clinical skills, picking up on rumors/info about the status of medical suppliers, who's shooting/injuring who, etc.

4) He'll keep an eye out to buy/barter for a military folding stretcher or if those aren't available, perhaps a nice wheelbarrow.  Something he could strap to the side of whatever vehicle is running, as an option to help with casualty evac next time there's a firefight.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

I’m not sure how much downtime Kessler will actually get what with one thing and another, but presuming there’s some

1. Try and get the compound into some semblance of order. So work out who’s now present, who’s staying, who’s not. Speak with Tymoshenko, discuss respective long term plans. Short to medium term Kessler is in no hurry to see the Marians leave - it helps us to have the best trained doctors in Gdansk on site and besides that Kessler’s not sure where else they can go at the moment without being at risk. Deal with urgent compound business, i.e. burying the dead (friend and any foes - the Ossis?), taking stock of the ration situation.

2. Delegate vehicle repairs to someone that knows more about that than he does (Ferro, Fischer?)

3. Sort through any intel recovered. Primarily thinking about anything taken from von Schweppenburg’s body (that has survived to this stage) but also collate anything obtained from MU prisoners (ones taken by the Mad Dogs,  e.g. Newell, not the ones at the Post Office).

4. Some attention to civil affairs. So working with Kaminski and the tenants at the school to try and ascertain what their needs are and arrange what work can be done to repair recent battle damage (primarily the compound) and improve living conditions (the school) with goal being to make everyone involved feel that they’re being listened to and where possible / action is being taken about any legitimate issues. Try - again - to recruit a Civil Affairs officer. Jose maybe?

@Spartan, related to that will be a request from Kessler to Ward to set up a clinic for the locals. Doesn’t need to be on a daily basis, maybe twice in seven days. Maybe some of the Marians can pitch in and help.

5. Assuming they weren't all destroyed during the fighting, try and get to the bottom of the various art works that we ‘liberated’ from Warmia. I think there was talk about Kaminski ‘knowing a man’ that could help with that but I could be wrong (it was years ago IRL that this happened). Or the man could be dead.

6. Try to actually deliver on at least some of the promises made to Karolina, starting with more exercise time. Try and get in contact with Janku / Olympic (BND), chiefly to find out if they are still functioning after the coup. Ask them if the name Karolina Schleicher means anything to them, preferably in a way that doesn’t make it clear that Kessler is holding her. If neither announces that she’s chief of all Stasi activities in Europe consider what to do with her. That seems to come down to a) releasing her completely to do as she pleases b) offering her a place in the Mad Dogs or c) handing her over to the BND.

If contact can’t be made with BND then we skip most of that and jump straight to what to do with her, options a and b only.

7. Try and get some beer delivered.

And thanks the OOC planning that's been put forth.

As a heads up I'm going to be away from home Friday to Tuesday and offline. I will have the chapter conclusion done before so there can be a fresh start on things in the 2024.

Tosh knows that the team is pretty banged up right now so, he will be volunteering a lot of his time as look out for the camp, helping with rebuilding and cleaning up after their last attack and, running any patrols out of the compound.

Holy cow, I leave for a few days and RPOL looks completely different. Hah! This will take some getting used to for sure.

Regarding the game Fuse, I feel similarly to others. You've been at this for a long time, and if you're hitting a point where you're ready to retire, I think we all would understand. I can only thank you for letting me join when I did - this has probably been the best and longest RPG experiences I've had, and not that I'm blowing smoke up your ass, but you're undoubtedly the most talented GM I've ever had the pleasure of playing with. With all of that said, I would happily and prefer to continue playing with you all, regardless of any changes that take place to this game with it possibly going in a new direction, or a new game, or whatever.

As for Jose, he'll be spending his time organizing the armory, getting the compound back in order, and helping to make repairs wherever needed, spending a roughly equal amount of time on each. If he has any downtime, he'll spend it hopefully trying to learn a bare modicum of Polish from some of the civilians and other Mad Dogs.

Ok I know I said that was going to be the last post for the chapter, but I'm going to add a small addition with the group together, alone, at the compound, following the resupply. So there will be beer and a chance to post any commentary or reflection. The vibe I'm trying to get on my end (your PC is free to be different of course) is low key, anticlimactic, and even with beer and such it won't be a celebration. This victory might not even feel like one to some. The city was killing each other. The group is burned out and you've lost people. I'd like to give the players a chance to express that.

I doubt very much if I'll be able to post before Wednesday / Thursday next week so if you all want to go ahead and post before then maybe just assume that Kessler is in a meeting somewhere, maybe with Fischer and Schleicher, and I'll catch up with you when I'm back.

ETA. I hate strongly dislike this new format.

Gonna add one thing to this list, for the next game day.

We should have a town hall meeting for everyone that's part of our 'community', so the Mad Dogs, Kaminski's crew, the Marians, the school tenants, former Stasi operatives, basically anyone that's currently in the compound where we (Kessler?) can bring everyone up to speed on the current geo political conditions in Gdansk and (try to) answer any questions / address any concerns that people may have. 'Cos, you know, people are bound to have concerns...

Happy to do it off camera.

Anyway, looking forward to taking things onward. I cut the turn short without giving much, in case you want to follow up on other things first. There are a few outstanding issues I never covered in the prior turn's summary (Kessler had a list for example). I've got something coming, but wanted to hand things off to the players for a moment.

I still have some intel stuff coming. Tomorrow I'll try to get it up for you.

Schleicher has been behaving the entire time. There's been no attempt to escape or anything like that, and she's helped the medics when they were here, plus some cleaning chores. Kat won't let her in the kitchen though so the hasn't been able to help with that. Schleicher isn't talkative much, or opened up to anyone, and she just goes about the compound like anyone else... sort of. At least in the daytime. Her wound has also healed.

I need to do some reviewing of past chapters about the art.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

The school civies never went back to the school (yet). So they're still crowded in the common room (rec room). They're packed in there, sleeping on the floor mostly. They're morale is pretty good though. They help out with the generator (as before) but some of them pitch in with security and odd jobs around the compound (Grzegorz & Gustek especially). Occasionally two or three of them will try fishing in the river, usually not successful. Those that are employed (in town or whatever) come and go each day, so they often run errands for people who stay at the compound.

Artur Deyna, the stranded taxi driver, is still hanging around. He's been trying to source parts and skilled hands to get his taxi working again. Your and Kaminski's vehicles had priority though, and then there was the big snowstorm, and other things like that which got in the way. So he's still around.

Kaminski's civies are doing as well as they were before the attack.

A clinic was run, yes. The pregnant one is doing fine. No real issues were noticed by Ward, nothing serious anyway.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

I remember working with a Polish lady years ago.  She found our pronunciation of Wroclaw (Rock-Law) absolutely hilarious.

In other matters, I will have to come back to this later as I'm getting chased for dinner, however, I'm not sure how up to date stores listings is but if it's correct we are chronically short of all forms of hand grenades.

Therefore, Kessler will be asking Olympic for a resupply of

Frag grenades
Smoke grenades
Non lethal grenades )concussion and / or CS gas)

I think we're also running low on some ammo types although I could be mistaken as I frequently forget which 7.62 suffix goes with which weapon, especially for the Sov stuff (at least the western stuff tends to always be 7.62 N...) So, resupply request will also include

7.62mm L for (I think) the PKM.
Some rockets for the RPG (not sure if we still have 2 of them or one got toasted in Lobo?)
Some rockets for the SM-2 Koncerz

And some ethanol.

Finally - for the moment - Fuse, can you confirm that the BTR and the Alpha Humvee are both fully operational? (By fully, I mean do their weapons systems work as well?)

If anything else has anything they think we will need please say so here so we can ask BND nicely for it.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

In terms of supplies - From where I'm sitting it looks like the largest gaps are in the following areas:

  1. Explosives - RPG rockets. Grenades of any and all kinds including smoke, AT, and flashbangs. Underbarrel-launched grenades. Other heavy weapons and/or demolition equipment. If we run into any armor we'll be in trouble pretty quickly.
  2. Medicine - We seem to be bone dry on any kind of medicine or medkits in stores. Unsure of what Ward might have on him, but it probably isn't enough. [edit: I managed to forget what was said last month about medical supplies and what Ward has on him, but I still figure it might be worth bringing up so I'll leave this bullet here for now.]
  3. Electronics - Night Vision and radios have historically presented us with issues, but it looks like most of the PCs are fully kitted up here now? It might be a good idea to get some additional batteries though if there are any to be had - we've had a lot of instances where our radios and NVGs run out of batteries while out on missions - it would be great to have some spares we could use to swap out in the field without needing to wait for charging.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

OK, so it looks like we're asking BND for the following

Medical supplies
Frag grenades
Smoke grenades
Non lethal grenades
40mm grenades (NATO and Soviet, lethal and non lethal)
RPG rockets
SM2 Koncerz Rockets
Any other anti armour weaponry they can lay their hands on (LAW's, RPG 18's, Carl Gustav rounds, etc)
Explosives (note we have a demo kit in the cast list. Also, does any character actually have combat engineer skill?)
Medical supplies
Spare batteries
NVG's - I don't know if everyone has a set of these, I know Corkman has referenced his character not having them in the past but I don't know if that's resolved now that he's playing Lines
Medical supplies
Small arms ammunition, all Pact calibres and magazines (especially a few more 100 rnd drums for the RPD)
1 x G11 Assault rifle with magazines and ammo (special request for Kessler, I saw one at the German Army Museum the other month and it looked way cooler than I expected it to. And if anyone is going to have a stash of these it should be German Intelligence)
Any suppressed weapons that they can lay their hands on (particularly a sniper rifle but also any MP5's or similar in case we need to go sneaking about) with magazines and ammo
14.5mm ammo for the Krok
1 x Jan Czerny (OK, technically that's not under BND's remit but I figure we can get him back from Waterloo now)
Medical supplies
Ethanol
M41 Pulse Rifles

When it comes to quantities, we'll take as much as we can get.

I'm out of time for now - will try and post IC as Kessler later tonight to cover the IC points but can't promise.- if not today will be tomorrow.

Technically everyone already has spare batteries. The way I work batteries is its a single charge value regardless of the number of batteries you carry. This is so I don't have to micromanage dozens and dozens of batteries. So if you get new batteries (in addition to what you have) I just increase the current charge value's max base. Also, after each two days of use (2 recharges or so) I remove 1 point of from the base charge value to represent rechargeable batteries going bad plus non-rechargeable being tossed out.

But point taken - you need batteries.

Is there a winter combat jacket in stores, or does someone have a spare that they could lend Per (and that would fit him)?

No, he's dead. I misspoke. Originally it was supposed to be a different character who died on the patrol and then I changed it to Meyer, last night I got it mixed up.

So I don't think you have any engineers right now.

Kessler’s current thinking is to send a dismount squad to investigate the buildings that he spotted while keeping whatever Lines spotted under observation unless any observation results warrant a change. So basically at the moment waiting to see if any Obs rolls give a clearer picture of local area.

@Corkman, I'm not sure where Tosh is but Fuse moved everything back to the compound with the last turn post so this meeting is taking place at our base (specifically the cafeteria). So if Tosh is at the meeting he can't be manning the BTR's MG. Unless Ferro did a really bad job parking it...

Re: OOC Thread - 23

I'm going to help Rae out (so he doesn't have retell everything I've told him) and put it here in the OOC, under the context of it having come from Schenker.

Colored text will just be some GM aside commentary...

The DIA team are (likely) in Osiek right now based on the last radioed update sent to the sub when Max was aboard.

Here's the wiki article for Osiek, but keep in mind it's not really an article entry but a copy and pasted section from when the Mad Dogs briefly visited it (years ago in real life). https://wiki.rpol.net/?id=30566/Osiek

For some context, Osiek is where the NATO allied 2nd Polish Free Legion is currently holding out. They were part of US 11th Corps but (lacking mobility) were unable to withdraw with the rest of the Corps when the offensive unraveled. As Kessler noted, US 11th Corps have since declared for the US Civilian government, but the 2nd PFL are still loyal to the Colorado Junta. Estimated strength is 300 Polish Home Army and associated advisors (Green Beret mostly). The 2nd PFL had a backpack nuke issued to it prior to the summer offensive, but they never reached their objective to be able to use it as planned.

BND reports the DIA have negotiated taking control of the device as some kind of "trade" (details of which are unknown).

The DIA team were originally planning on an undercover crossing of the Tczew bridge posing as traders (and a doctor). However, the Polish 12th Cavalry Division in Tczew, have apparently closed it to all traffic. This might have something to do with Karel Janku's report on enemy troop movements in the region. It's believed the DIA unit, delayed now, is waiting in Osiek until a boat can be acquired and/or passage negotiated, probably from Nowe (another location the Mad Dogs visited) or further south in Grudziadz.

https://wiki.rpol.net/?id=30566/Tczew
https://wiki.rpol.net/?id=30566/Nowe

So, this means they probably won't have a motorized vehicle(s) on the eastern bank of the river, since it's unlikely they'll be able to find a boat capable of that. Although you can't 100% rule out the DIA team making arrangements for motorized transport to be waiting for them on the other side.

The DIA team are/were planning on entering the Malbork via the Southern (Rt 55) checkpoint, as it's less guarded than the Western (Rt 22) checkpoint. Looking at the map, one will notice the Nogat River will be a water obstacle that may be relevant, or at least narrow down the area where they could be find, a little.

Once inside the Malbork perimeter, the unit be using a safehouse on **** road. Max actually knows the street name and address but I'll withhold it because the players don't have a map that shows street names (military 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps don't usually have that info).

The DIA team will be move the nuke to within 250m of Malbork castle. But even the DIA team are acting on partial INTEL so they won't know themselves exactly where until they get there and scope out the area (hence the use of a safehouse to lay low while their own prep work is happening).

Not much else is known about Malbork, but you collectively are aware there is Malbork Airbase (operational), a NATO PoW camp at a sports track and some tennis courts, the heavily forested Polana Park in the center of the town, the main vehicle repair yard for the Baltic Front, and a safehouse for the Mad Dogs which has been pre-arranged by the BND.

I may have mentioned this before but I don't have the time these says to take on the bulk of planning for ops so we need to try and hash things out as a group.

Based on a single read of the intel thread my thoughts are to try and find the DIA team before they cross the river, using means I've outlined IC but I'm more than happy to do something else.

As for the second part of the mission, dealing with the Soviets in Malbork, I think we'll need to cross that bridge when we come to it, let's just focus on finding the DIA team.

Agreed on the course of action.  The DIA team is first priority to try and dissuade or eliminate them as a threat.  If we can't do that by not encountering them, we focus our efforts on Malbork.

Re: OOC Thread - 23

OK, so if I'm reading this correctly we've got two suggestions

1. Try and intercept on the west bank and if that fails head to Malbork
Dave
Heffe

2. Head straight to Malbork
Rae

@Corkman, I'm not sure what option is your preferred so if you can please clarify 1 or 2 in OOC.

@Jinny, I'm reading your IC post as an endorsement for option 1 but that could be confirmation bias on my part so can you also confirm?

@Spartan?

As for the Krok being able to swim, @Fuse, can you confirm one way or the other? I do recall that it's amphibious capability was compromised when the Germans first joined the game but I think repairs were made at some point.

Echoing Rae's sentiment - this has been more than great, and I hope to play with you all again soon.

On a personal note, I can't believe I've been a part of this group for almost six years now, and it feels like the time absolutely flew by. You're all awesome roleplayers, and incredible writers. I can say with all sincerity that I'm now a better writer due to having picked up skills from reading your posts, and I appreciate each and every one of you for that - thank you all for your unrelenting commitment to writing high quality posts.

Fuse, from you I learned how GMing a campaign in a roleplaying game is supposed to work - you're ridiculously good at defining and growing a world. I hope that you one day consider a career as an author. :D

Hope to talk to you all again soon, either on Discord or the Juhlin forums!

Re: OOC Thread - 23

Hey all,

Yeah, it's finished. Sorry for waiting so long to let you know. I was meaning to delete some recent IC posts and adding in a proper conclusion, but I kept putting it off. Maybe I will at some point... I probably will.

Thanks for making this work. I had a great time, with lots of memorable moments. Some things worked and some didn't, but I think in the long run it was pretty good. So again, thanks for all the contributions over the many many years. That's just crazy haha!

I'm taking a break for a while from play-by-post type gaming, but like I mentioned several weeks ago, I am working on a new game. Anyone here is welcome to join when it happens. Two points. 1) I don't know when that will be, because I'm taking a long break and there's also the need to continue to prep once my break is over. It will probably happen after the summer is over. 2) I'm not going to be advertising the game publicly. My preference is for a small group (but like I said, anyone here is welcome). Obviously, if you aren't interested, I won't be offended.

Anyway, thank you again.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

The first IC post of this game appears to have occurred on:

Sun 11 May 2008

Is that correct?

If so, I propose that May 11th of every year henceforth, shall be known as Mad Dog's Day.

I'll be celebrating appropriately:
