Call of Cthulhu, patient edition?

It's a game I have long wanted to explore, but have had real trouble finding a good game of it.
I wont bore you with the stories of the ways it has gone wrong, but I really feel like a game should be relatively slow developing, with a building atmosphere.
The last game I played went from character to gen to demise in under 130 posts. Sigh...
I would love to run one myself, but I simply don't have the focus and drive anymore.
So is there anyone who can run such a game without needing to pull out the big guns lightning fast?
I feel like there should be several levels of learning that the world isn't what we assumed before running into Elder Gods.
Reminds me of the early days of AD&D when over eager DM's would whip out Orcus for third level parties. No clue how many low level games had artifacts back in the day, the Axe of the Dwarven Kings and the Rod of Seven Parts was everywhere it seemed.

Hello, I played various Cthulhu games with Gaffer. He likes relatively short games and when they finish he starts another one, maybe set in another time or location, etc. and you can decide if you want to go for a new one or if you want to take a break. He's really good and I'd recommend his games to all CoC fans.

I second the vote for CoC games run by Gaffer, I think I am on number 3 or 4 now.

Yaztromo Advanced Fighting Fantasy games are also great!

I am glad he is popular and well liked, but it seems his style of short and sweet is the opposite of what I am looking for.

Thanks for the info though.

Thanks Yaz and steve for the kind words.

@Piestar: Short and sweet is in the eye of the beholder. With one recent exception where RL derailed my players, my games have all run 800-3000 posts (average ~1500) over six months to two years.

I like running for people new to the systemas well as old hands. I generally recruit six to nine players to start, knowing that there will be some attrition.

I've been running a single game for a while and would like to get a new one going if there's enough interest.

I don't think you'll have recruitment issues, Gaffer...

@Piestar They're short, but due to general one-shot-at-a-table length arcs, not because characters get a prank call that's cultists putting them through to Cthulhu, so to speak...are you only interested in very long/campaign-style games specifically, or just a sensible approach to Mythos content?

If Great Old Ones actually get "onstage" in a CoC game, something has gone very wrong because you can't do anything about them, that's the point; your previous Keepers are both intriguing and terrifying exceptions to the rule (unless they're playing Pulp Cthulhu or its non-Chaosium relatives specifically).

Keepering shouldn't be a race to get your players et, it's about creating the illusion of exposing normal folk to a dark and terrible world under the world whilst actually keeping your players from making a beeline for the nearest sharp thing/acid pit/sky alligator like a bunch of toddlers for long enough for a satisfying story to happen. If you think I'm exaggerating, I've had Investigators nearly/die from utterly mundane and natural hazards like ice, horses, and falling off cliffs. It's possible one/some of your Keepers just aren't good at keeping their Investigators intriguingly distracted from jumping in the woodchipper the moment they're left to their own devices yet.

In reply to Gaffer (msg # 5):

That sounds better than what I thought was meant by short and sweet. Could you let me know if/when you start a new one?

I really want to play with a party that feels like totally normal people at the start, where no one (in character) has any knowledge of things to come. One game I started, everyone was so busy posing dramatically and bragging about how much they knew that the game never got out of the initial drawing room.

I would like something where we all start as true, old school style first level characters, total neophytes.

That’s the sort of thing I’d like to do.

I’m going to Origins in June, so would want to start the end of the month for story at least. Let’s see what interest this stores for now.

Sounds good. Enjoy Origins! I'm gonna need awhile and some help with character gen. Curious if you have a preferred era?

I'd love to throw my hat of interest into the ring as well. I've never played CoC but I have heard great things about it. I've just never had the chance to play.

I’ve written and run for Gaslight and Old West (19th century), Classic (1920/30s), and Modern (1945-2000 or so). I have to say though that Classic is my favorite.

I think classic would be to my tastes as well. Be fun if somehow we ended up involved in the great crash of the stock market, causing the depression, and maybe even being there at the origin of the giant dust storms that roamed Oklohama and the mid-west.

Bump. Not sure if there is work being done on this or not, but I thought I would ask again.

Someone willing to run a novel-lengthed story on Lovecraft rather than a short story. Something with with the layers of an onion, thin, subtle layers in a multitude, rather than the three licks and a crunch of a tootsie pop that are all I have seen so far.
