Looking for a RIFTs game.

Mainly interested in a bog standard Wandering Adventurers style RIFTs game mainly set in N.America (though being RIFTs it could go anywhere).

That said I am willing to adapt to the sort of game that a GM wants to run so long as it takes place on RIFTs Earth and by Paladium rpg rules (and isn't an evil game. i don't dig playing, or playing with, bad guys).

Looking for a RIFTs game.

Would either of you be okay with it being played via the Savage Worlds system? I was thinking about setting one up. If you both are interested I will go ahead and put something together.

Looking for a RIFTs game.

I'm interested in playing on a Rifts game but not with the Savage system. I totally understand the people who don't like it but the clumsy Palladium system is part of the game charm imo.

While I will continue to look for a Paladium RIFTs GM I have never played a RIFTs game by SW rules and would be willing to give it a try.

I'd be interested in Savage Worlds Rifts.  Never played it before, but backed the latest Kickstarter

Okay, then. I'll get to work on the details. Look for a recruitment post sometime in the next week or two.

@Wolfattack: I feel you on the sentimental aspect of sticking with Palladium. Unfortunately for me systems like Palladium, Shadowrun and GURPS always had too much crunch and/or complexity for my tastes. SW RIFTS (imo) manages to keep the feel and fun of the original. Again this is all just my opinion.

In reply to HardcoreCasual (msg # 12):

The biggest fault I've ever noticed with Palladium Rifts has to do with the fact that they seem to have borrowed from AD&D for the experience tables, and not compensated for the fact that the latter counts treasure found toward character experience.

But color me interested; I've GMed a few Rifts games but can't recall the last time I was a player in one.

I'm interested in this, as a fan of the rifts world story.  I'd be interested in giving the SW version of it a go, if someone can help me with that rules set.

So we've got a Savage RIFTs game in the works, which is great, but I want to mention that we are still looking for someone willing to run a Paladium RIFTs game as well.

I have reopened my Rifts homebrew (Palladium rule set) for the interested.  However, I'm still interested in being a player in either the Savage Worlds version of Rifts or of another GHs Palladium Rifts.

This thread has led to some cool games but I'm still looking for that strong paced standard N.Amer RIFTs game.

Looking for a RIFTs game.

So, I've been thinking about starting up something-something Palladium for a while now and I've popped into this thread a couple of times and maybe I'm up for GM'ing a game of Rifts. Maybe.

I have A Serious Question, though, before I start thinking up cool junk.

What is it about Rifts you love? In my experience, Rifts players (and, to a lesser extent, Palladium-system players) are into one of things: Gonzo Fluff, or Gear Porn.

Gonzo Fluff enthusiasts are there for the KAPOW! and the ZOWIE! The whole giant wackadoodle world filled with wackadoodle things and just want to rampage across the world running into immortal tentacle mecha and four-armed philosopher yeti and sentient vampire trees and just DO COOL JUNK and the rules can whatever while they do it.

The Gear Porn people are there for the sweet, sweet crunchy numbers. They want to scroll through the books and spend every single credit they have in the single most efficient way possible and manipulate the ragged reed-basket of a rule-set to generate as large a bonus to [THING] as possible. And they tend to be very concerned that the rules are being followed very closely.

(and there is a third type, I guess, who are specifically into Lord Kev's oddly pervasive military-worship fascist slant, but they tend to fall into the second category anyway)

These approaches are equally fine. I have fit a little into each, in my time. Part of the fun of Palladium is its very strange sense of specificity. It's for the first group that the Savage Species version was created, and that's great, but you lose a lot of the game's absurd retro charm when you clean it up too much. It really works best when it doesn't really work at all.

However, too much of the second approach and you create a game that A of all, doesn't work very well on PbP and B of all, starts a kind of arms race that generates too many disparate elements for a GM to reasonably keep track of and tips the gonzo over that fine line from asset to liability.

Does that make sense?

If so, my question for you is:

What do you want to DO? What kind of game do you want to play? Like, would you be happy making your standard 19-page character sheet full of Very Particular Things and Very Accurate Numbers and then not worrying too too much about the rules unless it's fun? If we're halfway into a (heavily houseruled) fight and I forget that you have [Very Niche Ability] that is triggered by [Very Specific Thing], can we bring it up without being a jerk about it and just rolling with it? Can you be okay with a party of nonsensically unbalanced power-differentiation and then everyone just kind of low-key agreeing to keep the game on an even keel? Are you okay with just hand-waving almost everything once combat starts and just winging it as best as we can? Are you okay with most of the rules being opt-in (if you have a fun thing you want to roll for, because it's equally fun if you succeed or fail, awesome! But if you're the Building Things Guy and your Building Things Skill is, like 18% and you want to just Build the Dammed Thing, then that's cool too)?

Like, the most fun part of Palladium is character creation, yeah? It's very front-loaded that way. So, what if we did chargen by the book, and then, say, a solid 75% Rule of Cool afterward? And Rule of Cool not being just an excuse to power-game the life out of everything?

Would a game like that work for you?

I really like Palladium. And I really like Rifts. But a large number of its devotees are a type of player that I generally don't have fun playing alongside (especially on PbP). No disrespect to those players, I wish them the best of luck finding a game that suits them, but if I were to start something up, I'd want to make sure we could get along.

If all of this sounds like your jam, then let me know and I'll start shaking the idea tree and see what falls out.

Looking for a RIFTs game.

My own RIFTs games run pretty close to BTB but I'd be more than happy to give the game you're describing a go and I expect I would enjoy it.

What I'm looking for is a game where I can play a heroic adventurer who's goal is to simultaneously make things better for people and make a living.

I love RIFTs for the setting and the story so I guess I'm closer to the Gonzo Fluff side but I do have a serious love for all the Tech and Magical gear in the game so in that respect I'd say I dig the Gear Porn too.

I've never been given to the Rules Lawyer style of play and Paladium games are literally the way they are in order to leave final authority on any rule to the GM in question.

To sum up, if you want to run it I'll play in it.

Looking for a RIFTs game.

What I've always loved about Rifts (aside the sheer insanity that is the setting and stacks of books I have for it) is typically the awesome and crazy adventures that the groups I have played in go on.  Sure, acquiring all types of random awesome gear is great... but one of my favorite characters was a burster who used a mech (sans cockpit protection / glass) like a giant flame-throwing exo-suit.  It was a merc company (literally my favorite type of group for Rifts) and I basically picked up every bike & weapon and just carried it around to sell later).  It was absurd and it was great.

My last one I played a genius who led our merc company (which later grew to an entire town of its own) and hunted bounties, fought demons, and travelled around this homebrew Texas setting.  Acquired and fixed up semis to do transport & hauling - think Mad Max.  Along the way we worked for some gods which got me thinking... how can we (or at least, just my character) become gods?  Started a religion to spread that pantheon, and just inserted myself among the pantheon to see if gaining followers would do it.  Never got there, but the religion was doing well when the game ended.  lol

I've played a mute man-tiger (racial template out of South America or Russia I think, but was part of the Dog Boy program essentially), more than a few tech wizards, bursters, & other caster types, and even a master vampire once.  Shopping in Atlantis and playing a game where we explored (did missions) across the multiverse was fun.  I've played hardcore Rifts canon settings a few times, but more often than not enjoy customization and unique character that GMs I have been fortunate enough to play with (or have created when I was GMing).  I've been hardcore about the rules and tracked every credit, and I've played games where dice weren't slung outside very tense moments and climactic encounters.

Rifts wasn't my first RPG, but it has always been one of my favorites.
