Considering a Return

I took a hiatus from RPoL... oh, several years ago. Five? Longer?

Anyway. I've been reminiscing about some aspects of the site, like the absolute control GMs have on dispensing information in their games. Something services like Discord can't do. Though Discord has the advantage of being able to ping people in real-time to make sure they post.

So, what's changed over the years? The visuals are different, I recall the editor here being laid out differently. I can tell it's stuff from the Beta that's gone live, but what else is new?

Considering a Return

So a few good lists exist to detail it, but I'll point out the major changes I noticed.

  1. Making a new game can be done from any screen. It's on the right panel.
  2. When you're in a game you GM, you can start a new topic. It can be a bit confusing, for me at least, to accidentally hit "Start a Game"
  3. Most Importantly you can sort by group. I'm not sure if you can od that asa player, but as GM you definitely can. I would use a fruit here, but frankly it's just fantastically useful. I use most groups in game and sorting that makes it SO much more manageable.
  4. You can upload up to ten different; 5 kb 100 by 100 pixel portraits to a game you GM. I haven't done it yet, but I think players can use them too.
  5. Cast lists no longer show players any activity date for non GM. So if you use NPCs/STCs thnat act as players, you don't get the give away that was there before. It's not my style, but I'm sure some love that. GMs probably should expect to be asked "Hey, when has" someone "logged in last?" as GMs can see the same information as always, the date and time. Thus GM aliases that are not GMs no longer need to "fudge" log ins. This is loved and hated depending on people's preference for NPCs as full characters. Some neither hate nor love it, like I, but it is consequence to be aware of.
  6. Cast lists also no longer show groups.
  7. Images that used to dominate the horizontal "x" axis will be reduced. Users can left click on the image, right click to view image, or open image in new tab, and then potentially use the magnifying glass. So no more bloating threads with big images. You can post them, and so can your players.

That last part is pretty helpful. I know I'd gotten into the habit of specifying the width on all images just to make sure they didn't explode. Sorting groups is a big deal for me, I used the heck out of them in my old games.

Thanks!

You're welcome. I'm glad it helped!

By no means is that all that changed. I shouldn't, so won't, link to the discussions, but if you poke around you'll see numerous threads.

Welcome back!
