I have images that I modify in GIMP, and I export them. I have one that's 46 pixels wide, and 42 high, but it's still 26 kb. Back in the noughties I had a sense of memory and scaling it down. I've only had GIMP maybe since 2012, and I really like it! I just can't figure out what I need to do, specifically, to lower the memory of the image.

What are some things, like checklist, to get the image to 5 kb.

Options to consider:

1. Export the image as a JPG.  When it opens the dialog box to give you some options about how to export it, find the "Quality" slider and crank it way down. Export it and check the size.
   
2. If that's still not enough, you could convert the image to Indexed mode (Image menu > Mode > Indexed) which will reduce the number of values available in the image to 256, and then export. This can make the image grainy, so it might not be the best option for things like photographs.

However, I did get a tip, and that worked.
