Computational Linguistics Research Project on Roleplay

To the RPoL community,

My name is Thomas, a second year undergraduate student at the Ohio State University in the Department of Computer Science Engineering. I am conducting a research project in the field of computational linguistics. My objectives are 1) To understand the psychology of online roleplay, and 2) To determine the effects that creative writing/speaking has on our ability to communicate. Particularly, I am interested in RPoLs play-by-post style of forum roleplay.

At this stage, I am collecting data on the types of communication people use in online roleplay (in forums, voice chat, video games, etc.). I am also researching the creative process of people who roleplay. I am currently reaching out to communities that engage in roleplay or creative writing to see if they would be interested in participating in a new and undiscovered part of communication in computer science.

If you would be interested in participating, I have incorporated a link to this message to a 10-15 minute survey. The goal of this survey is to gain a better understanding of the roleplay audience, and potential processes that computer linguistics can use to further analyze the creative writing process. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.
