Game of Thrones Thoughts

I think that, even though I expected it, Daenerys Targaryen's kill-them-all decision was rather abrupt, despite clues given all along. I think the writers may have missed a way to add the final motivation for the switch—one (maybe a drunk) of the people in the street shaking a fist at her and the dragon.

Game of Thrones Thoughts

How many GoT writers does it take to change a lightbulb?

Only two but it takes them 7 seasons to screw it up!!!

I am very disappointed with Season 8. They had a LOT of character development with characters to get through and a very limited amount of time to get through it. Instead they wasted. a LOT of time with fluff junk.

Jon spends most of the time just saying “I dont want it”, Cersei stands in a tower looking out, Tyrion just screws up constantly... So much fan service and filler that needed to be used better. For dany’s fall they needed a ton of screen time instead we got like 20 minutes of dragon porn. Almost half an episode was dragon vs people who aren’t important and while it was spectacle it was also boring
OK and fell flat and time could have been better spent. 30 minutes of “don’t tell anyone but...”. The Jamie and Lady knight scenes were pointless fan service if they would have just been thrown away next episode. That is fine if you have time to do that stuff but clearly they tried to cram two seasons into one.

All that build up of the Night King wasted. Cersei ve Dany is wasted.  Just...ugh. Should have rather them stop at season 7 then see so many buildups fizzle one after the other.

Theon was handled very well. I am actually fine with Arya’s arc. Sandor was handled well and Jaime was...okay. But Cersei/Dany/Jon was awful and that was the main arc.  What did Bran do? What did Tyrion not screw up?

Game of Thrones Thoughts

I haven't watched but I'm not sure I want to.  I don't remember the exact wording, but I read a comparison of this final season, especially the last couple of episodes, as an essay written in a couple of hours when the writer realized it was due yesterday.  Why??  They had the time to make as epic as much of the show has been so far, why rush it as the end, messing up so much of the character building in the process?

I haven't read the books since the second one and haven't seen much of the series.  But from what I hear, it's basically Lost all over again.  An interesting premise that no one really considered would need an ending until much too late.

Haha. This is a great way to describe it, IMHO.

I'm an obnoxious, pretentious book snob so I've been dissatisfied with the show going on four-five seasons now, but I could put that innate pretentiousness aside and get why people liked it for a while. S7 and especially S8, on the other hand, have been noticeably painful to watch. Inconsistent characterization, terrible pacing, mangled plot arcs; it's got it all.

Re: Game of Thrones Thoughts

One of the worst comments I heard FROM THE WRITERS was the explanation for S8E4 was that they just "forgot" about the Iron Fleet.

I mean COME ON. You have a room with some of the best and brightest minds in Westeros and your opponent has exactly 2 things to worry about: The Golden Company and the Iron Fleet

HOW DO YOU JUST "FORGET" ABOUT THEM!?!

Poor Tyrion. The writers have really had it out for him. I mean he just can't seem to do ANYTHING right. He was wrong about Cersei in Season 7. He was wrong again about her in Season 8. He was wrong about telling Varys...just wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong left and right.

Makes for a pretty terrible hand, no wonder Dany got fed up with him :P

For sure! Although Tyrion wasn't the only one, at least; the other cunning mastermind-y type characters like Littlefinger and Varys were done supremely dirty by the show.

Buuut I can see how that happens when the writers handwave away ridiculous lapses in logic with an excuse like, "they forgot about the Iron Fleet." That's hilarious.

Re: Game of Thrones Thoughts

Am i the only one who finds it alittle disconcerting that the children have effectively conquered Westros, even if its only through the puppet king Bran? I noticed alot of people didn't pick up on that the three eyed crow/Raven is effectively the spirit of the children's green seers passed down from one seer to another, the fact that the two most recent ones were human is not that big of a change.

No. There is countless media one can turn to if they need humanity to win in the end every time.

Re: Game of Thrones Thoughts

Sure but didnt the last of the children die against the Night King?

And echoed Littlefinger was such a brilliant villain in the books, especially the way he took over the Vale. To have him get suckered like that. And Varys too,

I am not upset that they died, I am upset because it wasnt a good win. It wasnt a satisfying conclusion. And I dont mean I needed to see them tortured. Bolton was a great villain arc. He was set up, he had several big wins, and his downfall was because of his actions and not because the writers handed him the idiot ball.

He had won the battle but didnt realize just how bad it is when EVERYBODY hates you. He was so focused on the bloodshed he didnt see the reinforcements coming. That was a good loss. Even if he had survived and escaped it would have been good because it was earned. He earned his loss as much as the heroes earned a win. Littlefinger and Varys didnt earn a loss. They did what they were always doing and were very good at doing and had been doing it extremely well for many years and them poof, dumb then dead. Unearned even if it was deserved.

Re: Game of Thrones Thoughts

I personally feel that they tried to squish too much into the final season.  It might have been better to add another 7 episodes, and add more context.  And they should have been hinting much more heavily back in season 6 and 7 that Dany was heading for crazy train territory and fast.

Game of Thrones Thoughts

In reply to warjoski (msg # 4):

From what I've heard the writers of Lost didn't even plan for a second season, let alone the run it had.  They just stuck things in with no real reason, or plan for explanation, and then had to scramble to piece something together when they kept getting renewed.  On the other hand, the writers of GoT had reasonable expectation of multiple seasons, and story line for the first few from the books.  They have had years to plan toward the end once they passed the books, and lots of time for this last season.  Why make the viewers wait so long for it if they weren't using that time to plan an epic finish?  They weren't even tied to standard length of each episode as an excuse for rushing some things.  If they couldn't plan something for themselves, there are lots of fan speculations, some of which GRRM has said were quite accurate to his vision.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts right here.....

But I did like that damn dragon screen time, even though it was excessive.

Game of Thrones Thoughts

So having a few days to think on it...I actually liked the last episode. Especially if you read the books the seeds have been set for awhile...although I still think Arya should have died...bear with me on that.

The wrap up for Sansa, Tyrion, Bronn, Bran, Jon and all the rest (minus Arya) was well thought out. It was clear they sat down and gave time and consideration for all the characters involved.

That being said, Arya should have died. Her whole arc has been her not really fitting in with anything. She was too rough and tumble to be a lady, she was too wild to be a Stark, she was too proud to be a Faceless man. In the books it goes very deep into the fact that when she dreams she worgs into Nymeria (her direwolf released into the forests) and there is a LOT more about worging in the books. One of they key things that is hammered on is when a worg dies they can live a "second life" in their chosen animal. One of the Free Folk shamans does this. When his body is killed his spirit lives on in his pet eagle.

This all kind of points to Arya dying and then living on as Nymeria, queen of the wolves! Given how absolutely little she did after the Night King I think it would have been much more fitting for her to suffer a mortal wound killing the night king.

She can do her leap, he stabs her but before she turns into a wight she stabs him and then she too shatters into ice shards. Losing Arya to kill the Night King would have made the fight have heavier stakes. He's the big bad for thousands of years but can't break plot armor?

So in conclusion here is my list of characters handled well, imo:
Sansa, Bran, Bronn, Theon, Jon, Brienne, Grey Worm, Davos, Melisandre, the Hound, Sam

Characters handled so-so (they had their ups, they had their downs)
Varys, Tyrion, Jaime

Characters handled poorly...their arcs really were a let down
Night King, Daneyrs, Cersei, Eunan One-Eye

I watched the final episode again. Opinion of it increased. Lots of what will the characters do next, but this story is ended. We'll see, I oipe, how the books turn out. I bought no copies until the series is complete.

Heh. I like that. On a different level, I saw stuff comparing Bran to a guy who did nothing on a group project, showed up to sign his name and gets equal credit.
