Notre Dame de Paris

My heart weeps for the people of Paris in this dark time.  Reading of the news of the fire at Notre Dame de Paris I could not help but shed tears:  the cathedral took over two centuries and thousands of craftsmen to build, and was adorned with some of the most priceless art and iconography in the world, all in sublime expression of love for Deity.  More, regardless of one's faith or lack thereof, none who have visited Our Lady of Paris have failed to be moved by her.  Such was her power to inspire the world.

She withstood the French Revolution (including the Reign of Terror), and two world wars, standing for over eight hundred fifty years as a beautiful testament to the people of Paris and the entire world.  The fire consumed the greater part of the wood in her structure in just over an hour.  It is a stab through the heart of humanity.

I'm still pretty numb, trying to grasp that it's gone...yes, a lot of the facing was Viollet le Duc additions and the internal art is safe, but the windows. We can make copies, for sure, if funding can be settled and a little off-colour since there's techniques we've lost over time, but we'll never get the ones mediaeval people set as acts of worship back; the prayers and craft of the pious dead are gone to sheer bad luck, and that is sad. I feel for Parisians and those ghosts, both. Rebuilding will take a long time.

They say accident, but I'm not certain I agree. It started mere minutes after closing? Not to mention all the religious troubles in the world. I would be very surprised if it was merely an accident, and not some jihadist making a statement.

Look mate, Europeans, especially the French, aren't in the habit of concealing terrorist attacks, nor do jihadis let everyone out of a building before bombing it. Don't hijack a sad thing to help terrorists spread suspicion and seed hatred among Abrahamic neighbors, that's not cool.

Please also bear in mind that whether or not this fire is the result of a terrorist attack, as well as the political/religious agenda of whichever group may (or may not) have been responsible, lay beyond the boundaries of permitted discussion in RPoL's public forums.

Most likely it was an accident from the reconstruction process. A faulty generator, a misplaced cigarette etc. Occams Razor would point that way until more evidence is presented. Beyond that attributing this to specific groups for nefarious agendas is very harmful speculation.

I wouldn't have been horribly surprised if it had turned out to be a deliberate act of terrorism, but the news I'm seeing all says the investigators and authorities on site are reporting that the evidence doesn't point to intentional arson.

In times like this it is natural to jump towards the worst conclusions but my advice is to remember Hanlon's Razor:

quote:
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

When you realize that most things in life are dumb mistakes and not some dark conspiracy then it helps realize what a wonderful place and time we live in.

Yes.  Only the heart of humanity can rebuild it.

Occam's razor: a careless worker had used a heat source too near a combustible, didn't realize what he'd done, it smoldered for a time then burst into flame, which became a conflagration.

Re: Notre Dame de Paris

I tend to agree with the Occam's razor interpretation, it's simpler than arson and tracks pretty well with the fact that there was construction work. I could be wrong and it could turn out to be Arson, but right now the evidence doesn't point there.

Either way the (thankfully far from complete) damage is a travesty.

Re: Notre Dame de Paris

While it's certainly sad that such an old and iconic building has been so badly damaged, at least a decent part of it is still standing, the stonework seems fine. And as far as I'm aware there was one firefighter injured and that's it - at least it was no Grenfell Tower...

Re: Notre Dame de Paris

From reports that I've read most of Notre Dame was untouched by the fire. The building is made of stone and what caught fire was the wooden beams of the roof and the scaffolding that had been erected as part of the repairs.

Notre Dame lost its spire but the bell towers, stained glass remain intact as well as the artifacts within had mostly been removed to accommodate the renovations.

From Washington Post:

quote:
As the smoke cleared from the sky Tuesday, it was almost possible to look head-on at the church — to see its carved statues and two rectangular bell towers — and imagine that all was intact. Much of the valuable art and relics had been saved. Even the exquisite stained glass windows remained in place, seemingly immune to the previous day’s flames.

But that belied the somber accounting of all that had been lost, and how the religious and architectural landmark at Paris’s center had been altered. The church’s trademark steeple, part of the Parisian skyline since the mid-1800s, had been swallowed in the flames. Char and smoke marks licked portions of the walls. And the roof — with its centuries-old wood — had been destroyed like tinder, leaving gaping holes that let sunlight shine into the cathedral Tuesday.

edit: I've just looked at several pictures that show the intact stained glass windows. and roses.

Re: Notre Dame de Paris

The steeple had 250 tons of lead. Imagine that.
