New RPGs for PC

Question for all the PC gamers:

I've been out of the PC gaming loop... Could you guys recommend some good recent PC RPGs?

I have Tides of Numenera and Tyranny. Is there anything else that's interesting?

What kind of games are you asking after?  RPG elements in games have become pretty common, so there are tons of them to various degrees of quality.

Pillars of Eternity is a good isometric RPG which isn't turned-based, but you can control the speed and pause to issue orders.  I haven't played the sequel, but I hear it's on par with the original.  Same company as Tyranny, though PoE seems to be better rated.

All of the fairly recent isometric Shadowrun games (Returns, Dragonfall, Hong Kong, etc.) are pretty good.  There's another one that isn't, though, so read reviews.

Divinity: Original Sin (and the sequel) are both isometric RPGs that actually are turn-based.  I've only played the first part of the first one, but it was good.

It doesn't quite fit the mold of the others, as it's an older action RPG, but Bastion is one of my favorite games of forever.  A lot of people missed it, but if you haven't played it, I'd put it on your wishlist and grab it on sale sometime.

I do actually have Pillars of Eternity :) Somehow, it didn't grab me, though.

I'm looking for a game with a good story. Not necessarily full of action - so, no Diablo-esque games. When it comes to the story / action proportions, I liked games like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age: Origins...

BFink:

To expand on what I didn't quite articulate, Bastion is an action RPG, but the reason to play it is the story.  The storytelling in that game, mostly via the narrator, but also through the music, is top notch.  The gameplay is alright, but the story is what makes it worthwhile.  They tried to recapture that in their followups, but none of them ever landed for me like Bastion.

As for the rest, there aren't a ton of new games in that space right now.  There's the new Pathfinder game, which I hear isn't bad.  Pillars and Divinity: Original Sin, but it's one of those spaces that can't sustain a lot of games.

Though... I honestly would recommend playing through Diablo III if you can get it for a good price.  I got it for $15 around Thanksgiving and it has a surprising amount of story to it.  Whenever the new season starts, I'll start a new seasonal character and delve into it again (as I got to the endgame too late to do one in the last season, which ended yesterday).

Hmmmm... what is a 'season' in relation to a PC game?

Re: New RPGs for PC

In reply to Varsovian (msg # 7):

Diablo (and some other games) do "Seasons" wherein you've got a limited amount of time (months  usually) to accomplish a set of goals. For Diablo, folks can make a Seasonal Character to devote to hitting those goals and unlocking various things - sometimes something as simple as a new skin/flag/banner, sometimes additional gear designed and prettified specifically for that season. A lot of the time, the seasonal gear is limited access to only that particular season.

Secret World: Legends has some seasonal stuff that they do - but the seasons rotate through the year. I.e., every year they've got Winter Caches for the winter season at the same rough time, a Halloween themed kit, etc.

In reply to Varsovian (msg # 9):

It's the new economy. By installing an artificial scarcity, companies hope to drive up demand, pushing the possibility of selling additional stuff. Some games just require additional time to get those Seasonal unlocks, most will offer boosts for a minor (or not so minor) fee to get them quicker.

Re: New RPGs for PC

The Diablo seasons are basically a hard mode for people that have already beaten the game.  You start with a fresh character that can't share loot with your other characters and then get rewarded for achieving things with that character over a limited span of time.  Since I'm a new player, in general, it seems like it'll be a fun challenge with no real cost to me (since I don't have all of those fancy things more experienced players might miss).

It's about keeping people interested in a game that includes multiplayer, which is a big deal.  It seems like the most important currency for games these days is engagement.  If you can keep people engaged with your game, they keep talking about it, and thus you have a longer tail on your sales.  If they pick it up and forget about it in two weeks... you'd better hope you made all of your money back in the first month of release.

Re: New RPGs for PC

As mentioned earlier in this thread, Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a decent isometric, party-based RPG.

ATOM RPG is a post-apocalyptic RPG that has a similar feel to the first two Fallout games. If you like Baldur’s Gate, you should give this one a try.

Kenshi is a bit obscure, but it’s a squad-based, sandbox RPG set in a post apocalyptic world. It’s a bit like Mount and Blade.

If you’re interested in JRPGs, Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler is a good pick up.

It’s not brand-new, but have you played Age of Decadence? It’s got a definite old-school RPG feel to it. It can be unforgiving, but it supports a variety of play styles. The developer is now working on an RPG called Colony Ship which should be in a similar vein.

Underrail: Expedition is still in closed alpha, but keep an eye out for it in the future.

Have you tried Kingdom Come: Deliverance? It’s an action RPG, but it looks pretty fun.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is simply amazing. It is fully voice acted, has a ton of depth, and won multiple awards. It has built in mod support and amazing co-op play.

I can't recommend it enough.

Re: New RPGs for PC

Divinity 2 is so good.

If you can handle some action gaming elements, Kingdom Come Deliverance is excellent. The action-gaming warning comes from its recreation of authentic medieval sword combat, which requires some tricky work with a mouse and learning combos. It is beautiful looking game, historically accurate as possible in an RPG (healing potions work, but that's it), and has a surprisingly high number of problem-solving or procedural quests. You start as an illiterate peasant, and have to actually learn to fight with a sword, and even learn to read. But it is such a satisfying feeling to master melee combat, or archery, or even alchemy. The story is grounded and human-- many quests involve helping refugees or curing a disease. I really like it. Two tips-- you need a pretty new computer to display the graphics in all their glory, and second (even though I don't ordinarily recommend altering games) you should definitely learn the console command for displaying the archery aim-point. That is one place where the developers went too far in their quest for historical veracity.
