Connecting with other roleplayers offsite

Hi I was just wondering how / if other players have contacted fellow roleplayers on other sites such as social media etc. Particularly in other countries. As far as forum based sites go rpol has always been and continues to be the best IMHO but I'm looking to make some new friends and the total anonymity of the site makes that hard at times.

I did read some articles on people creating roleplaying facebook 'personas' but that's technically in violation of facebook's terms. Google+ used to have an active roleplaying community but I hear that google are due to kill Google+ off in the near future.

As far as social networks go most are very geared towards connecting with people in your own country. I have had a twitter account for about a month now and have connected to people (mainly other developers) in the U.S, Europe and Japan but especially with Japanese users I struggle to translate tweets into English.

I tried sites like Diasporia but their decentralized nature makes them difficult to use IMHO. I've tried Line but that's more of a messaging app and unless you know someone well enough to get their line id you can't really connect to anybody. Plus it has no web based interface.

Ameba looks promising but the interface is in Japanese and hard to navigate.

Sites like provide 'language exchange' tend to offer services akin to a dating app that requires you to upload a photo and ask for your life history up front. Plus, they kind of expect you to want face to face meetings rather than online occasional messaging. I'm kinda looking for people who I can chat to online with similar interests and who I am not looking to date or to exchange language lessons with (Well maybe I'd be ok with the last part).

So anyone know of any good sites / social media platforms for meeting fellow rpers?

Please note that other roleplaying sites can not be advertised, at all, in this forum.

If you make friends with someone onsite, you could always ask them their name/where they hang out via Rmail. They might introduce you to their rl gaming group on social media.

Re: Connecting with other roleplayers offsite

In one of the games I'm in, one of the (former) players created a Facebook group and invited anyone in the game to join it (via the game's OOC thread).  There were about five of us that joined...

Then life got busy for her, and nothing much was done with that group...then she stopped doing much of anything on Facebook, and then on RPOL...so I think the group still exists on FB,  but it's been idle for years.

But it has been done, yes...people have made contact with other gamers via non-RPOL means.  GM of the aforementioned game has carried on extensive email conversations and even some phone conversations with a few of the players.

Basically, I'd say it's up to you...there is no policy against asking RPOL friends for other contact information, to the best of my knowledge.  If you want to meet them, it's certainly possible to make it happen.

Re: Connecting with other roleplayers offsite

I use an app called Amino which is somewhat akin to facebook with categories.  It operates somewhat the same but it's not just one site but hundreds of individual ones each with its own design.  They have a multitude of RP Aminos that have decent communities but...fair warning...a HUGE number of these are devoted to specific threads like anime, furries, korean boy bands (as in you RP your favorite member), etc. However, you can find quite a few with a gaming thread and even some for specific games (there's at least 2 or 3 just for D&D).
