Reminder: Duplicate Accounts

This announcements forum is a great way to make periodic reminders, and so here's the first.

The following is RPoL's policy on Multiple or Duplicate Accounts.  Keep in mind that once you create an RPoL account, you're done creating accounts and should never create another account for any reason.

RPoL was created from the start with role-playing in mind, and one of the key features was for people to have many characters in one or more games which, from the point of view of a third party, are completely separate.  Having more than one character in a game only requires the one account.

With this in mind it has been noticed that the overwhelming urge to create a second or third (or in some cases a twenty-ninth) account to bypass site rules, GM decisions, or generally just to cause disruption, does possess some people.

Due to the stunning examples of those who have trod the weary road of "Ha ha look what I can do!" before us, a site policy was implemented which forbids multiple accounts.

By this it is meant that you, a single entity, may not create more than one account for any reason.  People sharing computers are more than welcome to create an account for each person, and this FAQ is not meant to dissuade people sharing a computer or an internet connection from doing such.

We do not actively police all site accounts looking for duplicates.  We do, however, actively audit troublemakers, current and past, and log IP addresses and browser information to assist in this.  The logs are kept internal to RPoL assistants.

The following are not valid reasons to create another account:

    • A GM did not let you into a game.
The GM's decision is final.  Do not try to circumvent their decision by breaking a site rule.

    • A GM did not let you create another character.
The GM's decision is final.  Do not try to circumvent their decision by breaking a site rule.

    • A GM did not let you do what you wanted/asked.
The GM's decision is final.  Do not try to circumvent their decision by breaking a site rule.

    • You have a bad reputation.
You reap the seeds you sow.  Do not further soil your reputation by disregarding the site rules.

    • You forgot your password.
Use the Login Assistance link on the login screen to retrieve your password or.  If you cannot get the email then contact the administrator or moderators via rMail or email.

    • You forgot your account name.
Use the Login Assistance link on the login screen to look up your account name by using your email address.  If you also can't remember your email address then contact the administrator or moderators via rMail or email.

    • You forgot, or no longer have, your email address.
Change it in your user preferences.  If you can't login then contact the administrator or moderators via email.

    • Your friend wants to use RPoL.
If your friend wants to use RPoL they must create their own account.  Never make one for someone else.

    • You've reached your game limit.
Game limits are in place for a reason; do not work around this site code by creating more than one account.

    • Other sites let you have multiple accounts, and you're not going to do anything bad with it.
This is RPoL, and to use this site you must obey our rules.  We recognize no excuse for creating more than one account.

    • On a whim.
      Leave and never come back.

    The following are valid reasons to create another account;
    •

Keep in mind that users, especially those from the same computer, should keep their accounts separate at all times; they should keep a unique password no one else knows, and they should never, under any cicumstances, log into or use one another's accounts for any reason.

That last bit becomes extremely important if you share a computer with a relative or a friend: if you share passwords and one of you breaks a site rule, you will both suffer for it because we cannot tell which of you did it.  Never share your password with anyone.

Re: Reminder: Duplicate Accounts

What do I do if I have more than one account on RPoL?

The thing to do, if you know you have broken our one-account rule, is to tell us before we discover it on our own.

It doesn't matter how long ago you obtained your extra account or why; what's important is that if we have to do the work of discovering it, there are ramifications whereas if you come forward and tie up the loose ends for us, all we're going to do is remove the extra accounts.

This applies whether you created more than one account yourself, or you came into possession of someone else's account(s) for whatever reason.

You can voluntarily clean up extra accounts by rMailing me the details.
