Is second-in-command onboard Serenity, a loyal wartime co patriot of Mal during and after the Unification War, a loyal friend of Captain Reynolds. She is a "warrior woman", she has great knowledge of combat. Her past is a mystery; the only thing known is that she was born and raised on a ship and served under Mal during the war as a corporal. She demonstrates an almost unconditional loyalty to Mal.

Loyal unto death unto Captain Reynolds.  She has served with him time and again, and their understanding of each other makes them virtually the one person in the Verse that either can trust at this point.

The only other survivor of Malcolm Reynolds' platoon from the Battle of Serenity Valley . She joined him as Serenity's first mate to kick a little ass around the universe. And after a hard day committing mayhem wherever possible/necessary, she gets to come home to her husband Wash, Serenity's pilot.

Zoe is known to be a sensible "warrior woman" with a dry sense of humor. Mal always defers to her on important decisions. Her past remains a mystery, but it is implied that she spent her childhood on a ship, hence her fondness of flying. This could have been the commonality that brought Wash and Zoe together, despite her initial dismissal of him (likely because of his mustache).
