The crew we are with, me and River, they are a mixed bunch. But they took us in and keep us ahead of the Alliance. The captain, Mal, is hard to read sometimes, but I'm pretty sure he'll never turn us in or do us any harm. And then there's the mechanic, Kaywinnit Lee Frye, we all call her Kaylee. She has real pretty eyes, and she's a genius with engines. She's really quite something, not like those girls on Osiris. I think we could really connect, you know, given half a chance. But I have to worry about my sister first.Of course, being the medic for this crew isn't exactly the safest job I can imagine. The hired gun, Jayne Cobb, he mostly treats me and River as outsiders. He even tried to turn me and River into the Alliance. But I think we've finally come to an understanding, though I can't see inviting him to any fancy parties like my family used to host back on Osiris.
Zoe is the captain's right hand man, or I should say woman. She treats me and River decently, though early on I got the impression she might shoot us both if the captain ordered it. Zoe is handy in the infirmary - having competently assisted treating the crew, even myself. Zoe's husband, Wash, has always treated us like family. He's real easy going and quite the pilot. Like Zoe, he's helped in the infirmary, mainly with his fearsome brow mopping skills. We also have a companion on the ship, Inara, she's every bit the image of the perfect companion - respectable and dignified, yet very approachable. We get along well, but there is a sadness to her that I just can't put my finger on.
We also have a shepherd on board. Though he sometimes seems to be a bit more than just a preacher. Like the time he took down an Alliance Lawman after the Lawman shot Kaylee - probably saving the captain. I was prepared to kill that Lawman for my sister. I'm not a killer like Jayne, I prefer to heal people, but if you want to know what a man like me would kill for, it's my kid sister. She's the reason I'm here now. River seems to really like the ship. Me, its really not what I'm used to. It's quite different from our family estate on Osiris and the order of an Alliance world. Its rough, and there is often the threat of violence, and always seems there's someone with a gun around. I've even been in a couple gun fights.I've never shot anyone, though I came close. But, I have been shot in the leg myself by an insane bounty hunter. I've saved lives. Dozens, maybe hundreds. I reattached a girl's leg, her whole leg. She named her hamster after me. Now I'm on a late model transport ship, named Serenity, after a big battle the ship's captain and first mate were on the losing side of, and I'm not even around when there is a decent wound on the ship. But, with this crew, I have a feeling I'll be feeling more useful soon.
I always thought the name Serenity had a vaguely funereal sound to it. Not that I care so much, as long as my Sister is safe. I mean, she can be a real brat at times, but she's my sister, and she's just a kid. You Know? Till I can find out what they did to her and somehow get the Alliance off our backs, I guess we'll make a home on Serenity.</ul>
