BIO
Kaylee is a mechanic with an average build, charming looks, and cheery disposition.Cheerful, energetic Kaylee is Serenity's ace mechanic, a tomboy who accepts anything the universe throws at her with a smile and a bounce. Trained by her father, she's a natural mechanic, which got her the job on the Serenity after "going out" with the previous mechanic.
At the same time, she can be flummoxed by particularly difficult problems ("Sometimes, a thing gets broke, it can't be fixed.") or by someone who sets out to break a machine instead of fix it, which seems a fundamentally foreign concept to her.
The crew's occasional forays into crime don't bother her, though she's not much good in a gunfight. Kaylee is a 'glass is half full' kinda gal. No matter what is going on around her, she's usually able to see the positive side of the situation. When describing the more questionable behavior among her fellow crewmates, she makes even the most illegal behavior sound adorable.
Kaylee's character is the soul of the ship.
In the episode "Out of Gas", it is established that she has no formal training, nor is she the first mechanic that Malcolm Reynolds has worked with. Her talents are intuitive, and as demonstrated in The Shindig, she has a vast knowledge of engines that she has picked up through experience and conversation with other mechanics. If its mechanical, Kaylee can likely figure out a way to solve the problem as shown when she disarms a Reaver booby trap.
Jewel Staite explains Kaylee's character as being wholesome, sweet, and "completely genuine in that sweetness", adding "She loves being on that ship. She loves all of those people. And she's the only one who loves all of them incredibly genuinely." She has a crush on Dr. Simon Tam.
