Hoban Washburne, known to his friends as Wash, is Serenity's pilot and Zoe's happily-married husband, though not necessarily in that order.

6' tall and of slim build, Wash is not an imposing figure.  This lack of intimidating qualities is reinforced by his questionable taste in clothing, which ranges from the garish to the downright impractical.  He prefers comfort over utility, often wearing a loud Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops when sitting behind the controls.  Mercifully, he shaved off the mustache he had when he first hired aboard Serenity.

Wash tells anyone that will listen that he was raised on a planet that was so polluted he never saw the stars, and that the only black he saw was belched out of a smokestack.  He says that he studied to be a space pilot just so he could breathe clean air.  Then he pauses for laughter.

Is Serenity's pilot. While more of Wash's past is disclosed than most other characters, his background is still sparse: he joined pilot training just to see the stars, which were invisible from the surface of his polluted homeworld, and he joined Serenity despite being highly sought after by other ships. He is very light-hearted and tends to make amusing comments, despite the severity of any situation.

Character's History: Wash grew up loving the stars, though he grew up on a planet so poluted you couldn't see them.  He jokes at one point "Sometimes I think I joined the flight school just to see what everyone was talking about." but the truth is he was born to fly.
