Niccolo Salamoni is a younger son of the family, sent to the Church by his father as an 'investment' rather than because he had any semblance of a vocation for the priesthood. Outwardly, at least, he behaves correctly, no womanising for example, unlike many noble clerics. The religious life seems to suit him. After studying in both Italy and France, he spent time in Rome, amassing considerable personal wealth and the title of Monsignor at an early age.

Now he has just returned to Venice, having been named as the successor to the incumbent Bishop of Venice and sent to assist him and 'learn the ropes'.

Thin, dark haired, always immaculate in dress and appearance, Niccolo tends to survey the world around him with detached curiousity.
