Here's how I do it.
Type out the list the way you want it, adding spaces to indent nested lists. It's okay for a nested list to have only one item.
Example:
1. First Item
* Nested Item A
* Nested Item B
* Nested Item C
2. Second Item
3. Third Item
* Nested Item A
* Nested Item B
Pick one of your nested lists. Highlight it, and click the
list+
or
olist+
buttons below. Then delete all the extra spaces and line-feeds, you don't need them. While you're at it, remove all line-feeds from the nested list, so that they're all a single string of text.
Example:
1. First Item

Nested Item A
Nested Item B
Nested Item C
2. Second Item
3. Third Item
* Nested Item A
* Nested Item B
Do the same for each nested list. When you're done, the entire nested list should be a string of text attached to the end of the parent list.
Example:
1. First Item

Nested Item A
Nested Item B
Nested Item C
2. Second Item
3. Third Item

Nested Item A
Nested Item B
Now highlight the parent list, and click on
list+
or
olist+
.
Example:
[olist]

First Item

Nested Item A
Nested Item B
Nested Item C

Second Item

Third Item

Nested Item A
Nested Item B
[/olist]
This yields:
- First Item
- Nested Item A
- Nested Item B
- Nested Item C
- Second Item
- Third Item
- Nested Item A
- Nested Item B
