Where is the warning?

Twice today I added information, previewed it, then got distracted enough to think the preview was the update and closed the window.

D'oh!

I feel like I should have gotten the 'are you sure you want to leave this page' warning. Was there something about what I did, or a change in the system, that would have caused the lack of a warning?

Re: Where is the warning?

Were you on a mobile device?  Those have a tendency to skip the warnings.

Re: Where is the warning?

I've lost a few posts that way...I'm not sure there's a warning set up for that.  It'll warn you if you're leaving the page while you're composing (at least, my laptop does...), but I've never seen a warning while viewing a preview UNLESS I was updating the post after previewing it, but before posting.  I think the warning is related to where, on the page, your cursor is active...if it's not in the composition box, I think it sometimes doesn't work.

I don't know, and if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.  That's just me extrapolating from my own experiences and observations.

It all makes sense, can anyone confirm or deny?

Re: Where is the warning?

I have lost lengthy pages as well. I tend to compose long pages in word or something similar ... or post to a hidden page as I work, then copy and paste when I am done. The pages can be wonky at times.

If you're using Firefox, I recommend the Lazarus add-in. It may be available for other platforms as well.

It's been a (figurative) life-saver for me more than once.

Re: Where is the warning?

I've learned the hard way to do all my composing in editpad or something similar and then cut and paste into the rpol site. Browsers just wait for a lengthy response and then they crash, on purpose! ;-) I've lost some great stuff and then had to try and duplicate it only to find my creativity diminished due to my anger/frustration at having it gotten lost. It's not really an RPOL problem, but a problem with browsers in general and quirky internet connections. I think something like Lazarus should be default in all browsers. How many years have people been losing stuff to the net?

My habit is to compose in a separate program that is set to save every 3 mins to Dropbox and then post it here when I'm ready. YMMV

Good luck.

I've done a search of add-ons at the Mozilla add-on page, and it doesn't find anything called Lazarus. Is it gone, is it from somewhere else?

Re: Where is the warning?

Thanks Houdini!

I checked it out and I'm going to pass, the comments reveal that the app has been abandoned by it's developers and is having serious problems these days.

Still wondering if a warning should have been received or not though...

Re: Where is the warning?

I didn't realize that they weren't supporting it anymore, but I have used it quite a bit and haven't had one problem like they're describing.

However, here's one possible alternative.  I'll check it out a bit, just in case Lazarus does misbehave for me.

Re: Where is the warning?

That looks pretty sharp, one positive comment even called it a great replacement for Lazarus! Added it just now, will have to wait and see how it works but expectations are high.

Re: Where is the warning?

testing, test... does this darn thing work?

Not sure... I typed that, crashed Firefox from the task manager, re-opened Firefox, text was still there. Does that mean it worked you think? Or is that normal.

Just crashed it by jumping away to another page and coming back. Accessed the program and it found the entry! Guess it works... seems to have a lot of functionality I still need to look into though.

Thanks Shannara... hopefully this will be pretty useful!

Re: Where is the warning?

I often find Firefox has remembered my composition when I force quit anyway, without a special addon.

But I do find I didn't get a warning either while navigating away from a post preview right in this thread -- IF I don't alter the post at all in the edit portion of the (newly opened) preview window.

Perhaps it's a focus issue, or the page assumes you're not editing anything if there's been no changes since it loaded itself (as the preview)?

Re: Where is the warning?

I have issues on the mobile, especially when I need to look up something on another page.  I now compose my posts in scratchpad and save often, reloading it when the device blanks out the page after I tab back.

Re: Where is the warning?

Thanks for the heads up about this, I've realised that if you don't update the text on a preview then it won't warn if you navigate away.  Will be fixed in the next version.
