Re: Text Coming Up Thin

How frequently do you experience the problem? Is there any kind of regularity to it? Are you using the light or dark theme? Are you experiencing the problem with both the normal display font and the font the text editor and things under the tt or pre tags use? Does it still occur with bold and italic fonts? Does it happen with colored text?

Re: Text Coming Up Thin

From the places you describe occurring, your fixed width font setting is the problem.

Under Chrome settings > Advanced settings > Web Content > Customize Fonts > Fixed Width Font, what's set there?  Does setting it to (for example) Courier or Lucida Console fix the issue?

Some people also have had problems since Chrome introduced the DirectWrite feature.

You can access this to toggle it on/off by putting this in your address bar: chrome://flags/#disable-direct-write -- click the Enable/Disable link under "Disable DirectWrite" as appropriate and see if the problem is resolved.

I'm still having the problem but it's only on RPOL and only when I use my mom's laptop. Any other things that might help.

Can you supply information such as:
  • Exact where the problem occurs.
  • What browser it occurs in.
  • Does it occur if you change browsers?
  • What are your font settings in that main browser?

Re: Text Coming Up Thin

Google chrome, any and all threads that I post in (including this one) and it's set on times Roman.

That's the only browser my mom has on the laptop.

Did you try changing the font settings on the browser as suggested earlier?

Re: Text Coming Up Thin

In reply to PrincessCrystal (msg # 17):

In addition to srgrosse's question, above, I have a few.

  • OK, but where on RPoL?  All text everywhere? Just when you're typing in the create-a-post window?  (More details to help us sort out what's going wrong and where, please. Offspring243's first post did a great job of indicating where the problem was to me.)

  • Is the laptop Windows or something else?

  • Fonts: Times Roman sure, but what else?  There are six font settings to look at, which will help us troubleshoot.
    • Standard font?
    • Tiny -> Huge?
    • Serif font?
    • Sans-serif font?
    • Fixed-width font?
    • Minimum font size?

I don't know what you mean by "no fixed width".  Can you explain?

Re: Text Coming Up Thin

Standard Font is Times new Roman.
Serif Font is Times New Roman.
Sans-serif Font is Arial.
Fixed Width Font is Arial.
Font size is huge.

Problem is still there. I tried all the tips you gave the others but none fixed the problem.

I do most of my posting from my Kindle so I am not too worried but when I don't have it and am using my moms laptop it makes it hard to know what i am typing. She has a Vista computer and the problem has only been going on for a week or so.

any other tips would be great.

Re: Text Coming Up Thin

Be sure to set "Fixed Width" to a fixed width font.  Arial is not one :-)  The most common choice of Fixed Width font is Courier.  Other popular fixed width fonts are Lucida Console and Consolas.

Re: Text Coming Up Thin

Yeah, I don't know how to visualize what you're seeing there.  If I set my default font size to "huge" my laptop shows about 3 words on the screen due to the font size being ... huge (72 pt).

I'm not sure what settings have been changed on your mom's laptop - obviously many, since someone changed the Fixed Width setting to a non-fixed width font.  To get things right again, you might have to chin deep in the computer's settings and find out what's gone so horribly wrong.

Thanks, I'll go over my mom's computer with a finetooth comb the next time I'm over there. Something is going on with it and I aim to find out.

Thanks for your help though.

I had the same problem myself with Firefox for a month or two now. Found this thread, fixed the problem. Thanks!
