Welcome to the game! I'd like to use a campaign published by Modiphius for John Carter. Let's talk about what kind of character you'd like to play, whether that's John Carter, another person from Earth, a Green Martian, or something else.

 I was thinking of another earth man, not John Carter, but a British Army officer that gets assigned to an exploration party. He ends up going to Mars like John Carter, of course.

 The Royal Geographical Society had a member of the expedition(Williams's Uncle) with enough political pulled to request the character, for the expedition  Lieutenant William Somersby. R.A.. To take a leave of absence to accompany the expedition  in Egypt, as a sort of Chronicler.

 Williams grew up in a military family. of moderately wealthy means. He went to Sandhurst Academy, and has been in the Royal Army about five years, He has been under fire in two engagements in the many Colonial conflicts of the Empire.

 The current expedition is being lead by his Uncle, a noted explorer and big game hunter. William requested to join his uncle, on his most recent adventure.

For character creation:

1. Compared to other people, how would you rate William in terms of strength, dexterity, intelligence, and health?

2. Again, compared to other people, how perceptive is he? How strong is his will? How fast is he, both in reaction times and in distance he's able to move?

3. Is there anything special about him, something that marks him out as different from other people?

4. What flaws does he have?

5. What skills does he have? I assume he'll have the standard list of skills a British lieutenant would have. What about his background? Does he have any hobbies or academic subjects he has studied?

6. What languages does he know? Obviously English, and on Barsoom, he will acquire the telepathy that John Carter possesses. It's unlikely he will encounter anyone else from Earth on Barsoom, but perhaps he knows French, German, or other languages.

1. Compared to other people, how would you rate William in terms of strength, dexterity, intelligence, and health? He is  above average in most of these catagories,as he is an Academy graduate, and he is actice in horse back riding, Fenching, and cricket.

2. Again, compared to other people, how perceptive is he? How strong is his will? How fast is he, both in reaction times and in distance he's able to move? His is both perceptive and strong of will. The only flaw in will power is women. He could be influenced by a pretty face, in simple matters, But when it comes to his sense of duty, he draws the line, oe would have to roll for it

 His sense of 17th century code of honor. Women, and he enjoys the roll of the dice and turn of a card from time to time

He loves to ride horse, dance and fence. A cavalier, or so he thinks of himself, must have such skills. Well spoke

Excellent! I'll work on a character sheet.

Savage Worlds has some Mars material, too, that's heavily based on John Carter with a side of War of the Worlds. I'm thinking of adapting that to use as well, at least the JC flavored-material.

What regiment is William with? Is he with the Dragoons, Dragoon Guards, Light Dragoons, Foot Guards, Infantry of the Line, or Royal Horse Artillery, or Royal Artillery?

Here's what I have so far. I pulled some of this from GURPS Warriors, which includes a U.S. cavalry officer, and GURPS Hi-Tech, which includes info on the weapons of the time. Take a look at the sheet and let me know what should be altered.

Once William travels to Barsoom, his strength will triple, and he'll gain other abilities.

His points total puts him in the range of pulp heroes and is larger than life. Let me know if you want to tone it down, either with lower stats or fewer advantages. I typically start characters at 150 points. Navy SEALs are probably around 200 points. Superhumans start at around 500 points.

CHARACTER GROWTH




Some of the advantages won't come into play once we go to Barsoom, like Military Rank and Comfortable Wealth. Danger Sense lets you know sometimes if something is wrong. Combat Reflexes gives bonuses to defenses. Fit gives bonuses to HT rolls and allows you to recover FP faster. Rapid Healing allows you to recover HP faster and gives a bonus to avoid crippling injuries. Luck allows you to reroll a bad dice roll three times and take the best of the three rolls. You may use this ability once per in-game day.
