My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

I am having this weird phenomena where my posts show up as unread messages to me, and trigger the alert telling me that there are new messages in the thread, when the only new message is the one I just posted myself.

Have I tripped a setting somewhere?

My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

There was a discussion about it a coupke weeks ago. Apparently its something that happens on Chrome, now. You get used to it, more or less

OK, but FWIW . .. I'm not using Chrome.  I get it on Firefox, Edge, and vanilla explorer.

But if I'm not the only one, that's comforting. :)

It happens in all of them? Maybe it isn't the browsers, then. Maybe it's the new server.

The move to a new server has not actually happened yet (see link to a message in this forum ).  :)

In reply to SWolfe (msg # 4):

Could be a cookies issue.  Try clearing them out.

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

I tried that a few times...I do it  as general housekeeping once a week anyway.

I had trouble with a FB game and couldn't log on for a week, some other players  mentioned to, and suddenly i was on  again?.. wasn't  anything  I did?..The  Admins sent  me a  checklist, it didn't help.

In the end? I would  rather it light up all the time, then not at all!

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

I can confirm that due to my busy life slack nature there hasn't been an update to the site since August 2015, so if there's been any behavioural changes it hasn't been due to anything changes on RPoL.

That said, if you're using the responsive test site then I've noticed that the message read indicator does behave erratically so that's a different matter.  Didn't think I touched the cookie routines there but it's not right so I need to investigate the changes in the responsive code.

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

This is happening to me too.  And I agree, I'd rather it light up all the time then not at all. I've also cleared cache and cookies and find it's doing it on all browsers, multiple machines, but I think all Windows 10, and I believe that is the real culprit.

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

Necat… I put of  updates  for a while, and   finally let it happen.. the next time I signed on.. I got the    light ups?

I Have  Edge... but use  Google  for  Youtube and stuff...again?  its  a small thing, its no worse then Portaits  acting up now and again.

And  I try to be very active as a  DM/GM..so I check  any red light I see!.....better then comign   back to a game  and have a Player   PM  me" you didn't answer my Post..?

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

Pretty sure that 5 years ago when you made a post in a game, if you didn't immediately click to go into the thread when you get that option, the newly bumped post would show up as unread.  Is this what you're talking about?

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

for me?  If I post as GM or Player)  the  post lights up as if  its  a new post by someone else.

before? it only lit up when someone other  then myself, posted.. it is the  same for PMs.

so? when I post, I have to either  'read'  my own post..or mark it  as  read, so I know  when 'fresh" posts  come in.

again?..its a small thing. As  I said before, I would rather it light up  for all posts, then not at all!

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

So I've tracked it down to the fact most browsers have disabled a certain way of setting cookies due to security concerns.  Odd that rather than just making sure the cookie was valid they just disabled the whole function.  Odd and frustrating.

So I've hotfixed in a little patch for updating the "read" cookie.  Alas this now relies on javascript... so you'll either need javascript enabled, a browser that allows "http-equiv" cookies, or the third option is to put up with the annoyance!  (c;

There's a few other spots that need a little patch as well, but at least the important one is done for now.

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

if us out  here, I say thanks.... But again, it  was only an announce to  folks like me, who have a lot  of time to spend on by 'hobby'.. I have since taken it as a habit.

This was a  minor  thing, but  we all appreciate  your  and the other Mod's  work!

It stopped being an annoyance to me a while back.  Now I just hit that "mark as read' button before I close the forum tab.  :)

Just glad it's a minor/non issue rather than something pointing out a glaring security flaw or something.

I know you've been reluctant to cross that line for a very long time. But now that you have, if it becomes a normal state for the site, does it open up some options and features that'll improve the site?

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

Thanks!  I noticed that my posts weren't flagging a thread as "new" and wondered if I'd broken the new thread indicator somehow.

Thank you, jase. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing new-not new posts any more. This is great! And much appreciated.

Re: My Posts Trigger New Message Flag

In reply to LonePaladin (msg # 17):

Javascript is already littered throughout the site.  It's used for the popup windows for help, FAQ and the stickylist (though they still work without).  It's also used for the message formatting links/menu, the private text insertion.  The automatic timezone detection, the collapsing screen sections (main menu and wanted players search boxes).  I think you get the idea.  (c;

I try not to rely exclusively on javascript to do any one function, generally it's used as an enhancement.  There's a few spots where it's unavoidable, but otherwise I try to have functionality work with or without js.

As to your question, not really as nothing's really changed.  The transition to responsive and, more importantly, HTML 5 does open up some extra functionality.  But even if I went nuts on HTML5 and javascript I have difficulty thinking of anything that it would open up (that's not fluff).  If there is then that would be a discussion for the dev forum.

Otherwise known as progressive enhancement :)
