Slow down issues

Has anyone else been having slow down issues with RPoL? I have been having them off and on for a few days now, but today has been the worst. I've checked other sites, and it seems to be RPoL specific.

Slow down issues

At the bottom of every page it will say something like "Generated in 0.009 seconds."

If there is a discrepancy in the listed time and the actual time it takes a page to load (so it says 0.009 seconds, and actually takes 4-5 seconds to load) then it's a result of a poor connection somewhere between your computer and RPoL.

I'm seeing issues with a number of different sites over the last few days.

Generated in 0.315 seconds.

This was the message when it took a full minute for an RPoL page to load.

I have a two-monitor set up. While that was going on I was capable of visiting several other pages. Started a video that played with no load-delays. Posted several times of face book. Read a bit of a news story at FARK.

It may indeed be something between my computer and RPoL, but if so, it is only between my computer and RPoL, and no other sites.

That's pretty weird.

I didn't check the page, but the site slowed down for me, too. It was just RPOL, too. Everything else worked great.

I'm not having any problems with RPoL, but I am with other sites ! <grins>

It all depends on the path taken from your PC to destination server - anything in between can be the cause, and different sites take different paths.

To look for where the slow downs might be, on a desktop PC load a DOS command prompt and type tracert rpol.net ... this will give you timings for every step of the journey (max 30 steps).

That was interesting, and it's been ages since I used the msdos, but I have no clue what the info means.

Three lines say Cox, my provider, a bunch say zayo.com, and one simply times out with no info.

Ran it again, the sixth line was still slow, but this time it was also zayo.com.

Tried it for facebook, some of the lines say dead beee and dead beef. WTH?

Those are, if I remember correctly, the names people have given to the various servers that are routing the information.  Cox is running stuff through three different servers, from the time they get it to the time it gets to your connection.  Zayo.com is another one.  It was common, once upon a time, to make up fantastical or nonsensical names for servers (hence, dead beef and dead beee...I would not be surprised to learn that there was also a 'dead beed' or 'dead beeg'...or even a whole series of 'dead bee*' servers where the different machines were named on the basis of changing only the last letter of the name...)

But if you've got one timing out, or running slow, that's your culprit for your slow connection...or one of the culprits.  Think of it like trying to access a 4G wireless signal in a really crowded area...because the service is trying to parcel itself out to so many people, it takes longer to complete any given task.  Hard-wired connections suffer the same drawbacks, if they're getting hit by high demand...or if one particular node is having hardware issues.  Enough data will get through to prevent networks from rerouting around them...but not enough to prevent a noticeable lag in response time.

In reply to facemaker329 (msg # 7):

It just seems weird that it only seems to be impacting the one route to RPoL.

Assumedly the problem is that your route to the RPOL server passes through a particular slow server that it doesn't when you go to Facebook ?  EG if Zayo.com or that blank line are the only slows ones en route to RPOL, are they mentioned at all on your route to Facebook ?

As a guide, the first 8 steps on my RPOL test were <100ms, the next 8 were 200-300ms.  In contrast, the first 5 steps on my Facebook test were <100ms, the next 3 were 200-300ms, the next 4 all timed out and the last one was 200-300ms.   The paths in both tests were the same addresses for the first three steps, but after that completely different.

I didn't hit Zayo.com  or "dead bee*" at all en route in either test (unless they were the unattributed time outs on the Facebook test).

What can I do if I find the flaw. Is there any way to try and route things differently?

As far as I know, there's nothing at all you can do.  If it's your ISP that's slowing you down, you might get somewhere by complaining, but if the problem is somewhere else way down the route, forget it.  :>

I wonder who or what decides what route it takes. Seems like if the array of options was so large and so random, you could 'band' the internet on the side and try a new path.

That sounds reasonable - it would have been trying to connect via the same route.
