Apples

Bad "Apple"?
Seriously?
Please tell me that was a wordfilter and not a live mod.

Apples

Seriously.

I'm assuming that you've posted either bad language or profanity in a public forum ? ... in which case any one of us moderators would have had to edit your post to substitute the offending word/words with a tasty and non-offensive alternative.

While bad language might not offend you, and is acceptable in mature/adult games, the public forums are open to everyone, including non-adults.

The rules for public forums are quite clear:

/help/content.cgi?t=faqs&page=pfrules

And extracted here for your perusal and edification:

quote:
Do not use profanity.  Please do not use foul language and profanity in your posts -- and this includes trying to mask such language by substituting letters or symbols.  On RPoL, a tradition of substituting fruits and pastries for choice words has developed, and this is permitted within reason.

Hope this clarifies things.

Is English your first language? Sorry, but Alpha Sierra Sierra isn't considered a profanity outside of the Mormon church in my experience. You hear worse on The Simpsons.

Apples

I'm afraid that Kenshi has a point there. Looking at the moderated post in question, a word meaning a tough or intimidating person was edited, changing the last syllable into a fruit. The original word isn't profanity in any genre or modern culture that I am aware of, even if that final syllable (the name of a farm animal) can be when by itself.

I don't really think they care what your experience dictates as long as you abide by the ToU. Interestingly, your experiences are also not universal. I happen to agree with the late great George Carlin on the subject of all time favorite words, but I know that none of them will fly on the public forums.

I do however think it would be amusing if Apples was changed to Ace.

Re: Apples

It may not be profanity in YOUR culture...but RPOL is a global audience.  Some people (even if they aren't Mormons) find that word objectionable (for the record, I honestly couldn't care less about it, use it fairly often, myself).  But, given the broad base to which RPOL 'sells' itself, it's prudent for the mods to err on the side of discretion.  That way, nobody's hyperconservative mom walks by, reads over their shoulder, and demands they stop using a site that has language like that in a public forum.

Keep in mind, most of RPOL's restrictions came about because, somewhere along the line, something that nobody thought was going to be a problem actually became a problem.  I don't know if this is one of them...but I think it's a smart move to make sure it doesn't become a problem if it never was one.

The flip side of this--

You're upset because you got a trivial moderation on one of your posts?

Seriously?

Happens to people all the time.  Most just shrug and say, "Huh...okay.  Won't do that again."

In reply to facemaker329 (msg # 6):

The smaller word can be a profanity, but why was a larger word which included it in the spelling edited, pray tell? It reminds me of the "dawizard" and "iwizard" error in one volume of the Encyclopedia Magica, caused by poor usage of a search and replace command.
