Character Sheet Templates

In setting up a couple games, I've noticed an option in the GM Menu to create a template for a character sheet. I'm assuming this would simply copy the selected sheet into a player's character-sheet page, so that half the work is done for them.

How exactly does this work from a player perspective? I'm only playing in a couple games, and neither of them has used this feature.

The player sees nothing until you give them a sheet, and when you do you can opt to base it off a template.  They never see an actual template anywhere (though their sheet may end up being a duplicate of one).

So Jase, how do you set up the template to be used by the players?

There may be a more direct link, but I go:

GM Menu > Edit Character Sheets

Then, all the way down at the bottom there's a link "character sheet templates" in a little box.

In reply to tulgurth (msg # 3):

GMs use the templates, not the players.

Character Sheet Templates

It's not working the way you described.

In the game in question, I have a template made up. It's rather complex, and has been flagged as user-editable. If I go into a character who lacks a sheet, I see the "Create Character Sheet" link, which opens a blank editor.

If I go through the GM menu, and select "Edit Character Sheets", I see a list of my players, and the "Edit Character Sheet" button opens the same editor. There's a series of buttons for uploading a file, which I assume is looking for a plain-text file. At the end are two links: one to change the user-editable status for everyone, and the other for accessing the templates.

On that last option, I see five links: the template I made, and four that say "Create template". Each one opens an editor, as expected.

Nowhere is it giving me an option to use the template I made. Sure, I can go into the template's editing page, copy it, and then paste it into each sheet as I make it... but the way you described it, it's supposed to save me those steps.

Character Sheet Templates

I should clarify my initial statement.  Templates are actually applied when creating the character, there's a drop-down list to use one of the templates as each character is made.

Character Sheet Templates

<grins> I tried to do the same thing the other day.

Thinking on't, there's probably not much difference in the steps that would be involved to upload a blank character sheet from your local directory vs assigning a template from those you've previously uploaded.

Currently on the character sheets screen you click on browse, select a file and then the D/L option.  To theoretically assign a template (if such an option existed) you'd have to click on 'Assign Template', pick one from the list and then assumedly OK it ?  Could bypass the OK, but you'd want to be sure you'd picked the right one.

There are a few more clicks involved while currently browsing (probably unlikely that you keep your blank char sheets in the default directory), but to my mind that extra step makes it a bit less unlikely you're going to overwrite an existing character sheet with a blank one by mistake, as you might if you could assign a template to an existing character.

Personally I just hit Edit, use my links on the desktop to quickly navigate to my games folder, then cut and paste a new sheet - I can add things like character name and/or player name to it at the same time that way.

Otherwise, just have to remember to assign the template on character creation as jase says. :>

Hey, an option to "Assign and Edit" when creating a new character ... that'd be nice ... <gdr>
