Rolling for Successes question.

So I might just be dumb and not know how to work the dice roller properly, but I was wondering if there is a way to roll a dice where a certain number indicates a success.

What I want to do is roll like 6d6 for example, where anything above a 3 is a success.  So the dice roller would roll it and show not the total rolled, but how many successes I had.

Re: Rolling for Successes question.

Choose "Target Number" from the system list, then put your target number in the box, set the quantity and type of dice you want to roll, and you're set.

It does

go to "Help" (can be found in FAQ) -> Games -> The Dice Roller

Oh boy.  I feel really stupid right now.  But I navigated the faq section before and didn't see it, although I didn't browse through everything on there.  There is just so much.

Thanks again.

Except I just tried that for a 3d6 system, where the TN is 11-.

The Die roller wants a TN smaller than the Die size.  So multi dice, for a curve not flat like d20, does not seem to work.

Any ideas?

No worries at all - it can take a bit to get used to the flow.  This site is unlike any other site.  Jase has put an enormous amount of effort into creating what might be the easiest site to use - unfortunately, any time a program/site/app becomes 'powerful' it also becomes difficult for someone first exploring an area.

Re: Rolling for Successes question.

Lensman, assuming any other factors are suitable to this work around, you could just roll a D18 with the TN system.

Re: Rolling for Successes question.

In reply to lensman (msg # 6):

Why would you need a complex system for this?
You roll with 3d6 and compare the result yourself to the TN...
The target number is for systems where you use a lot of dices and all of them evaluated separately, so it helps you decide that from your 24 dices how many was above 4 for example...

For really simple things like comparing 2 numbers I don't think the diceroller should give any support...

Well, if you roll 6d6, every roll will be over 3, so every roll is a success. :)

That's not how probability works. 6d6 has the same 50-50 chance of being over/under 3 as any other d6 (for each die)

Which I believe is supported.

Re: Rolling for Successes question.

Nah...he's just looking at it from a different angle.  Rather than a system where the result of each individual die is considered as a success or failure, some systems take the total of the dice roll and compare that against the target number (which is, of course, much higher than a 1-6 result.)

Re: Rolling for Successes question.

Looks like the jest fell flat, Heath - but I enjoyed it !  ;>

Lensman - yup, target number functionality is aimed at individual die, so if you roll 3D6, it checks each of the three dice to see which are greater than the target number.

Comparing the total of 3D6 to a target number (or 1D20) for that matter is such a simple matter and ubiquitous throughout systems like D&D (what did I roll for my skill check/attack, is it more/less than I need), that the need for a target number wasn't seen as necessary (I doubt it was even considered).

BUT you could always just add "TN11" to the end of the roll description in the Reason for roll field if you wanted to flag that particular roll as a success/failure for posterity, or (as a GM) to provide that little bit extra info for the players.

14:53, Today: Fred the Fighter rolled 10 using 3d6. Skill check TN11.

In reply to Skald (msg # 13):

Yeah, you have to put your sense of humor hat on for that one, instead of trying to tell me how the joke isn't accurate.  My comment was meant to reflect the ambiguity of his original statement.  I was trying to be funny, not didactic. ;)

But this makes me wonder if there is a way to do what I was referring to:  having a "success" target number based on a multiple dice roll.  Like over 30 for a 6d6.  I couldn't figure out how to do that.

In reply to Heath (msg # 14):

Simple -- you can't.  I don't think the dice roller needs to tell anyone if one number is higher than another.  (c;
