What is the effect of banning someone from a specific game?

If I add someone to the ban list of a game I'm running, does that function as a sort of ignore list? Would a person banned know they had been banned even if they submit an RTJ, or try to make contact?

A person banned from a game can not read any of the threads, or send an RtJ to that game.

So the player would know. Thank you for the information.

They *will* receive a notice any time they try to access your game, though:

quote:
Game Ban.
Unfortunately you have done something the GM of this game has taken exception to:

You have been banned from Name of Game.

The GM's decision is final and site moderators should never be contacted about this.

We suggest to do not use rMail to contact the GM as bad blood entices the misuse of rMail blocking.

So yes, the person will know immediately that they have been banned from your game and that they are out of luck when it comes to getting sympathy from anyone (especially Mods) about it.

Good to know. For some reason, I had the idea that it was a sort of private ignore list. Not that I currently have any problem people. Usually those who get on my bad side manage to earn the attention of the admins too, but it's nice to know. ;)

You seem to know an awful lot for someone who is not a moderator. Why are you not a moderator? Just an idea.

In reply to steelsmiter (msg # 6):

I'm just a user, and most of what I know comes from either running into the same problems myself or having read about others having them in the time I've been here.  While I appreciate the compliment, even if I were offered the role I haven't the time or the energy to make that kind of commitment.

Besides, I like helping without anyone expecting me to help, and if someone gets obnoxious with me I always have the Mods to fall back on.   :p

Yeah, I'm in pretty bad shape medically myself, so even though I have the time, the energy would be a serious problem for me. Not that I'm volunteering or really know enough about it for it to work out.

Couldn't help you with the first, but with the second, I've been happy to cut out the middle man where I've had the clout to do so (mostly facebook "pages" and my profile, where I throw around banhammers like candy at a parade). Not so sure it's worth the risk of being expected to help I suppose.

Re: What is the effect of banning someone from a specific game?

One of the things I enjoy about the community here is that you don't necessarily have to go to the Moderators to get help with every single problem.  Yeah, there are some which can only be handled that way...but a lot of the technical issues can be answered by users who've either been through it themselves, or who have seen such issues brought up enough times to know how to handle them (or, occasionally, by someone who's just so driven by a particular problem that they figure out the solution themselves and then share it.)

There are some aspects of the job that make me kinda ache for the moderators...I know I wouldn't want their job.  But I also feel that, relatively speaking, RPOL keeps the trouble-load on mods low.  Not non-existent, unfortunately...but by comparison to some other sites, I feel like RPOL users manage to keep their noses clean and deal with their own issues better than most.

I agree with Face. The longer you're here, the more you'll see the same names pop up giving advice to the community and answering questions. Evil Empryss and Facemaker happen to be two of them.

On that note, since I know it's often thankless, I'd like to give you both, as well as the other regulars who do such a good job, a shout out. And that's not to forget the admins themselves and Jase for their awesome work!

Ahem, but on the topic of bans, if you don't want someone to know that you've effectively black-listed them, you can always work to make your games private by changing the group for your threads and keeping a list of usernames that you don't want to see. A good place for that is either on a physical sticky-note or a Scratch-Pad of a game you're not planning on deleting any time soon. Good luck on not needing the info though!

You can always keep your play with/don't play with in a thread only you can see.  Z might do, but you'd have to be sure you'll never exile anyone to there.

In reply to Visceri22 (msg # 10):

Thanks, I guess...I don't feel like I actually do all that much to help, except maybe to be the voice of sympathy when someone asks about something that I also didn't know how to do.  *laugh*  I'm not all that tech savvy, and the one game I run, I'm the co-GM to a game owner who vanished but said he would be back and asked me to, whatever I did, keep the game running until he did...so there's a lot of GM tricks that I know absolutely nothing about and even more that I can't completely use because I can only change so much in the game due to the fact that it's not actually my game.

But I'm a very good sympathetic ear.  And I have a pretty good memory when someone pipes up with a question that I've heard answered multiple times.  *grin*
