Re: Facebook?

Because there's no need for one, and neither jase or the other moderators want to take time we'd otherwise spend here moderating and or commenting on a facebook page.

Personally, I think Facebook serves a semi-useful purpose, but going to websites to comment about other websites and talk about other websites somewhere else ... If I had time enough to do that, I'd be running more games on RPoL.  :)

Re: Facebook?

Besides all that Facebook turned into such a scam website that I'd advise against it (if you don't believe me go do some research on how they make money).

It's noteworthy that there are a few fan pages that don't see a whole lot of activity.

Re: Facebook?

Why would RPOL need a Facebook page?  We don't seem to be suffering from any lack of publicity, really...and word-of-mouth is the most reliable advertising system of all (it's the hardest to make work for you, because it's entirely reliant on you providing a good product, but that isn't a problem here).

So, not only would a Facebook page be largely, if not entirely, superfluous, it would also potentially compromise one of the greatest priorities of the site...anonymity of the users.  There are a LOT of things about the site that are set up entirely to protect the identity of the users...having a parallel site/page set up where pretty much everything is geared to stripping away as much anonymity as possible?  Not real logical...

I think that's part of the reason the fanpages went into disuse.

While the OP made a good suggestion.... OK a suggestion. Don't let us discourage you from making future suggestions. We're always growing.

And rpol has an active community that usually voices their opinions in a well thought out manner. And we have moderators that will whip us if we do not.

As an advertising tool face book maybe helpful. You say your growing by word of mouth. Face book would help with that. Me and my friend could like your group and 20 to 30 people h
Who also game would learn about the site.

I would have love to known about this site in 2008. My buddy and me found you in jan 2014. Think of all the fun hours we have missed out on. I am thankful for finding you now. And plan to tell as many as I can.

So if you ever get some down time, think about adding a Facebook page, for information or advertising.

Re: Facebook?

It's been discussed before...with very little enthusiasm.  I think a lot of it has to do with the conflicting underlying philosophies between RPOL and Facebook, which I mentioned before...

RPOL goes to great lengths to maintain user anonymity.  At no time are you asked to use your real name, provide information about where you're from...unless you're verifying your age for participation in Adult games, you aren't even asked for age information.  The only people who know anything about who you are, personally, are people that you tell, yourself.

Facebook is CONSTANTLY pestering users to add more details.  Where are you from?  Where did you grow up?  Where was this picture taken?  What movies do you watch?  Do you know this person?  Do you like this band?  What's your phone number?  And you have no idea who's looking at all this information or what they're planning to do with it.

Don't get me wrong...I'm on Facebook, too, and I use it a lot.  But the two approaches to the question of user identity are antithetical.  Facebook users are a commodity to be used in order to maximize appeal to advertisers, where RPOL users aren't used for anything other than running games and giving feedback on how to make the site run more smoothly.

So, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an official RPOL page.  I think, at one time, someone was talking about creating an unofficial RPOL users page...but that whole question of protecting user anonymity put the brakes on it in a big hurry.  A very few users were very enthusiastic about it...but the vast majority of people that were involved in the discussion (as I recall it) said they wouldn't join such a group, because they value their anonymity here too highly to compromise it there.

Re: Facebook?

Recently a gamer friend sent me a link to a FB page for a new role-playing forum thing and that's what made me ask the question.

I just thought FB would be good for advertising RPOL and encouraging new players.  Many don't know RPOL exists.

I don't see how the semi-non-privacy of Facebook conflicts with the privacy of RPOL.  If someone goes to the RPOL FB page, then comes to RPOL, they end up with a completely different login/persona.  So no one on FB has to know who's on RPOL and vice versa.  It's not like RPOL is a game inside FB where it asks for personal stuff.

Anyway, I realize it would be a bit of work, even to maintain an unofficial RPOL FB page.  It would need daily or weekly updates to post stuff about RPOL, or improvements, or encouraging stories about RPers on the site.  If it didn't show a marked influx of new RPers, it clearly wouldn't be worth it.

Re: Facebook?

Even without a Facebook page we get at least 15-20 new members every day.  And no, that doesn't include the duplicates.

Is it just me, or do a lot of the duplicate accounts seem to be from the same group of (banned) users?

Re: Facebook?

I think that would depend on how you define 'a lot'...

But there are quite a few names that keep coming back around again.  You can't necessarily use how many 'You may also know this user as...' names, because there's the possibility that they racked up a bunch of alternate user-IDs before they were busted.

But it doesn't seem uncommon to see some variation of 'Once again, <insert name here> has been banned for violating the Multiple Profile policy...'

Some people just can't grasp the concept that the rules DO actually apply to them, no matter how many times it's pointed out, I guess...

In reply to The_Blob (msg # 19):

It's just you I'm afraid.  :)  Almost all of them are first-timers.  Very few are repeat offenders.

Out of over fifty people with duplicates listed on the most recent page, only about four are noted as previous offenders (and yes, we will always mention if they've been reminded about the site rules before).

Re: Facebook?

Well if there would be a desire for it maybe RPoL could have one of those 'company' pages on facebook people can like but is nothing more then a lil piece of information telling about the site. Though in general i believe if you have friends on Facebook that now you roleplay they should point you here anyhow. At least its what i do to all those people complaining they cant find a gaming group.
