A question about Wands and Caster levels (PF/3.5)

Ok guys, I cannot find an answer on a question in any of the rules.

I am thinking of taking craft:wand on a character of mine and making a wand of a 4th level spell. ( well more like a meta magiced lower level spell)

The thing is though, I do not need the spell to be at the full caster level.

I am wondering if I can actually make a wand but at a lower caster level.

there is nothing in the rules that states you cannot, and I would just use the formula to build (or even buy I guess) a wand with a lower caster level.

I just would like a more definitive answer I guess.

In reply to ricosuave (msg # 1):

From everything I have read (paizo forums for Pathfinder): this seems to be a DM-call.

The question becomes: "Is it possible for me to smash the ingredients for my potion of cure light wounds, LESS efficiently than I already know how to so do?"

If the GM's answer is yes: then go ahead.  The costs are already based on caster level.

375 gp × the level of the spell × the level of the caster.

Substitute 1 in place of the caster level (assuming a level 1 spell) and you're good to go.

However, a level 2 spell would still require a caster level of 3 (4 for you spontaneous types) to go into the crafting.

You can set the spell level anywhere between the minimum level it can be cast at and your level. "A creator can create an item at a lower caster level than her own, but never lower than the minimum level needed to cast the needed spell."

Hmm, so even if I use a meta magic upped spell I have to use the caster level needed to cast said spell. Poo

Caster level is covered on page 171 of the PHB, if you'd like a reference page for D&D ruleset.

Yes.

If you use a Level 2 spell, normally the minimum caster level is 3.

However, if you apply one or more metamagics, so that it becomes a level 4 spell ... now the minimum caster level is 7.

This isnot always a bad thing; the Wand's caster level (not the user's) is what counts for resisting dispel attempts, or for bypassing Spell Resistance.  Sometimes one or both of those factors can be sufficient reason to spend the extra gold and XP for a higher caster-level.

Also, for things like Fireball, where the effects are caster-level dependent (damage, for Fireball), it's still the Wand's caster level that matters, not the User's.  A 20th leel wizard using a standard Wand of Fireball deals out 5d6 damage, just like his 1st-level Apprentice does.  :)  Range, duration, area, anything dependent on caster level, looks to the Wand, not the Wielder.
